A war that has been going on for years can end, but to do so President Truman has to make a decision that could completely destroy a country and leave long term effects on it. WWII ended and soon after President Truman was told about the Manhattan project, which was a secret project to make the first nuclear bombs. He found out that the Manhattan scientists constructed two bombs that could end the war between the United States and Japan, on July 25, President Truman approved for the dropping of the bombs on Japan to end the war. Now WWII would be effected by Fat Boy and Little Man, the two bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, due to the race to create an atomic bomb, the detonation of the bombs, and the final outcome. The Manhattan Project, was a secret project of the constructing of the atomic bombs used during WWII. It took 27 months to complete what other nations and the united states thought was impossible. A multitude of ethnical groups from around the world helped make the bomb. The three main scientist behind the Manhattan project were J. Robert Oppenhiemer, also known as the “father of the atomic bomb”. J. Ernest Wilkins JR., who was an African …show more content…
American mathematician and physicist. The last main scientist was a women, Elizabeth Riddle Graves, she was a physicist. The nuclear bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima, was created when scientists took an atom of uranium-238 and turned it into plutonium-239, by a controlled nuclear power in a chain reaction. The nuclear bomb dropped on Nagasaki, was made out of the uranium-238 without being turned into plutonium-239. On July 16, 1945, at 5:30am in the morning the first successful atomic bomb testing was done in Alamogordo, New Mexico. This was important because the scientists that made the bombs discovered how to harness nuclear power. The nuclear bombs, Fat Boy and Little man, were dropped on Japan in 1945.The first bomb Little Boy was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Hiroshima was chosen because it was one of the only Japanese cities still intact. The bomb was devastating killing 66,000 people and injuring 69,000 more. In the novel Godzilla Returns states the “When the bomb was detonated, anyone within three and a half miles was immediately killed and disintegrated, anyone within eight miles felt power from the blast waves, and anyone farther than eight miles that were looking at the light had there corneas melted and were permanently blind” (cerasini). Three days later on August 9, 1945 the United States dropped another bomb named Fat Boy on the Japanese city of Nagasaki. The effects of this bomb were not as devastating, but still destroying the city and killing 39,000 people and injuring 25,000 more. After the detonation of both bombs, both of the Japanese cities were destroyed, and killed and injured a total of 199,000 people. The outcome of the two bombs are similar because both cities were completely destroyed and both suffered and still suffer from radiation.
The radiation from the bombs affected people by the destruction of stomach and intestinal fluids, destruction of bone marrow, and anemia killing most of the victims within 30 days. Even still today people are dying from the radiation of the bombs, so due to radiation Hiroshima and Nagasaki have become sights of the biggest mass murder events in history. In modern times the radiation effects pregnant women and gives some babies birth defects. How long the radiation will last and effect Japan is unknown, it could be a 100 years or even 100,000 years. Because this was the first event like this in history no one knows how long the effects will last on
Japan. The creation and detonation of the two nuclear bombs dropped during WWII., decimated the Empire of Japan. From this wartime experience, governments learned that nuclear warfare needed to be limited. No other nuclear bombs have never been launched at any another country. In fact, countries are now trying to dismantle all nuclear weapons throughout the world. The devastation of Japan was violent and brutal, but the war needed to be ended. However, a lesson was learned. That lesson being that a worldwide nuclear war would end humanity.
Upon reading “Prompt and Utter Destruction: Truman and the Use of Atomic Bombs Against Japan” by J. Samuel Walker, a reader will have a clear understanding of both sides of the controversy surrounding Truman’s decision to drop atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II. The controversy remains of whether or not atomic bombs should have been used during the war. After studying this text, it is clear that the first atomic bomb, which was dropped on the city of Hiroshima, was a necessary military tactic on ending the war. The second bomb, which was dropped on Nagasaki, however, was an unnecessary measure in ensuring a surrender from the Japanese, and was only used to seek revenge.
Japan will never forgotten the day of August 6 and 9 in 1945; we became the only victim by the atomic bombs in the world. When the atomic was dropped at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, there was World War II. The decision of dropping the atomic bombs was affected by different backgrounds such as the Manhattan Project, and the Pacific War. At Hiroshima City, the population of Hiroshima was 350,000 when the atomic bomb dropped. Also, the population of Nagasaki was around 250,000 ("Overview."). However, there was no accurate number of death because all of documents were burned by the atomic bombs. On the other hand, the atomic bombs had extremely strong power and huge numbers of Japanese who lived in Hiroshima
President Harry Truman came into office right at the end of World War II, after the death of President Franklin Roosevelt. Almost immediately after becoming president, Truman learned of the Manhattan Project, and had to decide whether or not to use the atomic bomb. With the advice of James Byrnes, Secretary of State, Truman decided to drop two atomic bombs on Japan, in part to demonstrate America’s power to the world and gain a political advantage in Europe (Offner 294). After World War II ended, there were negotiations about Germany, and it was decided that Germany would be split into two halves; the western half would be controlled by the United States and its allies, while the eastern half would be controlled by the Soviet Union. This situation led to increased tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union because of the two nations’ different political and economic systems. The Soviet Union began to view the United States as a threat to communism, and the United States began to view the Soviet Union as a threat to democracy. On March 12, 1947, Truman gave a speech in which he argued that the United States should support nations trying to resist Soviet imperialism. Truman and his advisors created a foreign policy that consisted of giving reconstruction aid to Europe, and preventing Russian expansionism. These foreign policy decisions, as well as his involvement in the usage of the atomic bomb, raises the question of whether or not the Cold War can be blamed on Truman.
The Manhattan Project The Manhattan Project was a research project, that created the United States first nuclear weapon, and led to its creation of the nuclear department during World War II. M.A.U.D. / M.A.U.D. group was created in 1940. Also, M.A.U.D was the secret name given to the group and it came from a phrase in a message from Niel Bohr (Cohen). This group produced a report that said that producing a fission bomb was possible. James Chadwick, a new member of the British M.A.U.D group, later wrote that at that time he realized that a nuclear bomb was able to be built in his lifetime.
At 5:30 AM July 16th 1945, the nuclear age had started. The world’s first atomic bomb was detonated. On August 6th 1942 at 8:15 AM, an American B-29 bomber, the Enola Gay, dropped a perfected atomic bomb created by the Americans, over the city of Hiroshima hoping to end the war. Thousands of people died in the two cities in Japan. They were Hiroshima and Nagasaki “the Manhattan Project”. The research and development project that produced these atomic bombs during this time was known as “the Manhattan Project”.
Atomic Bomb in World War 2 During World War II the United States government launched a $2 billion project. This project, known as the Manhattan Project, was an effort to produce an atomic bomb. This project was taken on by a group atomic scientists from all over the world.
Under President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s administration the atomic bomb was being developed. After Roosevelt died, his vice president Harry Truman was appointed President of the United States. Truman was never informed about the bombs development until an emergency cabinet meeting (Kuznick 9). Truman had to make the fatal decision on whether the bomb was to be dropped on Japan. With the idea of going to war, Truman had to think about the lives of the thousand American soldiers. The American soldiers had begun using the method of island hopping, because the bomb was not available. The idea of dropping a bomb was that the war itself could possibly end in its earliest points. The dropping of the atomic bomb could also justify the money spent on the Manhattan Project (Donohue 1). With a quote by Franklin D. Roosevelt “This will be a day that will live in infamy”, Pearl Harbor was a tragic day for Americans. The United States had lost many soldiers, which they had claimed that they will eventually get revenge. The alternates of dropping the bomb was also discussed at the Interim Committee. The American government was trying to get an invitation response from the Japanese government. If the United States did not drop the bomb and ‘Operation Downfall’ ha...
In 1941, The United States began an atomic bomb program called the “Manhattan Project.” The main objective of the “Manhattan Project” was to research and build an atomic bomb before Germany could create and use one against the allied forces during World War II. German scientists had started a similar research program four years before the United States began so the scientists of the “Manhattan Project” felt a sense of urgency throughout their work (Wood “Men … Project”).
President Truman's decision to drop the atomic bomb on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the direct cause for the end of World War II in the Pacific. The United States felt it was necessary to drop the atomic bombs on these two cities or it would suffer more casualties. Not only could the lives of many soldiers have been taken, but possibly the lives of many innocent Americans. The United States will always try to avoid the loss of American civilians at all costs, even if that means taking lives of another countries innocent civilians.
Truman fell into office after Franklin Delano Roosevelt passed away from a cerebral hemorrhage, he was sworn into office on April 12, 1845 therefore becoming the 33rd president of the United States. Within a month of Truman’s position in office, World War II in Europe had nearly concluded, within a month Hitler had committed suicide and Germany were throwing up the white flag, however the war in the Pacific with Japan had escalated. Military planners advocated an Allied invasion of Japan, which Truman contradicted that this strategy would prolong the war another year and result in many American soldier casualties. Truman knew a second option existed through the Manhattan Project that developed the atomic bomb, while attending the Potsdam Conference, which discussed on how to make Japan surrender, Truman was informed that a test of the atomic bomb had been successful, his efforts for an earlier conclusion of the war were in action. Truman approved to drop the atomic bomb on Japan; then on August 6, 1945 the B-29 bomber Enola Gay dropped the first bomb on Hiroshima. Estimates of the casualties are severe but upwards of 100,000 civilians perished instantly. Japan had not surrendered yet and then the second bomb was dropped on August 9th on Nagasaki, five days later the Japanese surrendered thus on September 2nd 1945, World War II had finally concluded.
In 1945, Germany had surrendered, but the war in the Pacific raged on. The allies were becoming desperate to end the war before it was necessary to carry out a full scale invasion. New developments in science had made it possible for the United States to weaponize the atom, and the consequent bomb created was dropped on Hiroshima and later Nagasaki at the approval of President Harry S. Truman and his advisors. In years to come, Truman would have to face questions over the merit of his actions. Although some may believe the atomic bomb was needed because it ended WWII, it was unnecessary to drop the nuclear bomb because of the alternatives that existed, the effect it had on the Japanese people, and because of the unethical reasons for dropping it.
When looking at the aftermath of the atomic bomb in both Nagasaki and Hiroshima the devastation it caused is evident. The majority of the population in Japan could have never imagined such a catastrophic event. On August 6, 1945 and August 9, 1945 massive amounts of lives were changed forever when an atomic bomb fell from the sky and created an explosion as bright as the sun. These two bombs were the first and only accounts of nuclear warfare. (“Atomic Bomb is…”) The impact that the two bombs left on the cities of Japan was tremendous. The bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima devastated the country through structural damage, long term medical effects, expenses, and the massive loss of life.

...ng in Hiroshima at the time (History.com). One blessing of the event is the massive fires, which prevented epidemics by acting as a disinfectant (Wikipedia). If one aim was met with the Hiroshima bombing, it was the physical effects, which were able to devastate an entire city.
During the First World War, America dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan, which killed around 90,000 to 166,000 in Hiroshima and another 60,000 to 80,000 in Nagasaki. These include who died as a result of the force and excruciating heat from the blast and also death cause by acute radiation poisoning. This exposure to radiation also caused cancer and other radiation related diseases such as leukemia. Children born to the survivors are often reported to have small head size and mental disability, as well as their physical growth is
