True friendship has a different meaning to everyone. A true friend is someone who protects you, is there for you, and helps you through the tough times. In John Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men, George and Lennie are two grown men that travel together and because of all the traveling they are best friends. Lennie is a big guy that is mentally challenged, and George is a much smaller guy who travels with Lennie to help him out in life. After many times of running away because Lennie has gotten into trouble, George and Lennie reach their final destination at a ranch in Soledad, California to begin working. Lennie mistakenly kills a woman at the ranch and once all the men on the ranch find out they go on a manhunt for Lennie. George then decides …show more content…
He protects him from himself, others, and trouble. You do everything you can to protect someone you love and George has done that for so many years with Lennie. The only reason George and Lennie are going to a new ranch to work is because Lennie got into trouble, and George knew that the people in Weed were going to hurt George. Instead of letting it happen George and Lennie hid and then left the town as soon as they could. When Curley comes into the bunkhouse looking for his dad he notices George and Lennie. He ask Lennie if they are the new guys he father was waiting for, and George answers. Curley wants Lennie to talk, but George told Curley that maybe he didn’t want to talk. Once George gives Lennie a look letting him know that he can talk he tells Curley the same thing George said, and Curley tells him to speak when he’s spoken to. After Curley and Candy leave George tells Lennie “Look, Lennie! This here ain’t no set up. I’m scared. You gonna have trouble with that Curley guy. I seen that kind before. He was kinda feelin’ you out. He figures he’s got you scared and he’s gonna take a sock at you the first chance he gets.” (29) In that quote George is warning Lennie about Curley and telling him to stay away or Curley will cause trouble. He then reminds Lennie of the place he told him to go hide if he got into any trouble. The last way that George protects Lennie is a way that no one would think is …show more content…
George was protecting Lennie, leaving jobs for Lennie, and George was so important to Lennie. It was a sad ending for both Lennie and George because he had to shoot his best friend, but he did it because he cared for Lennie. Lennie had no control of his mental problems and George knew that. George devoted most of his life to Lennie, and he was always on the run, protecting Lennie from people. Lennie cared about George so much, and George cared about Lennie. True friends care about each other enough to help each other in the craziest ways. After starting this new job, George realized that Lennie was never going to not do bad things because of his mentality and after years of moving around to protect Lennie he finally realized what was best for Lennie. We all have that one person who we would do anything for. We all have the best friend that we care about and we have all questioned how true of a friend some people are, but what would you do to help your best friend? You wouldn’t choose to see them suffer a life full of pain after a terrible accident, and in a way that’s what this entire novel was. George just didn’t want to see Lennie suffer anymore just like we wouldn’t want to see our best friend
George obviously cared for Lennie or else he would have left him by himself afte...
George wanted to be alone, away from Lennie because he could earn a lot more money without worrying about Lennie. George wants Lennie gone so he could live life without getting into so much trouble like Lennie does. When Lennie gets into trouble then they both get into trouble. George needed Lennie gone in general weather he had to kill him or
A friendship is a special relationship between peoples , It occurs between friend that care about each other. In talking about friendship , the novella from John Steinbeck “Of Mice and Men”. Two friends George and Lennie ,they are trying to find a job together to complete their dream of having a farm. Lennie began to grow furious at her for dying because of how George would react if he found out. George was left with no choice but to kill Lennie for his own
Which then brings me to the next scenario in the book when a little more damage happening. “Let go Lennie” (Steinbeck 63) is what George shouted when Lennie was essentially breaking Curleys hand into little pieces. The quote resembles George having to keep Lennie from crushing Curley's hand even more. Lennie is strong but lennie can't seem to realize or make it click in his head because of Lennie's
George kills Lennie because he did not want to witness Lennie being hurt or killed carelessly, run off by in his own and not being able to take care for himself, and Lennie’s mental disorder will never change how Lennie reacts to certain situations. Many believe taking the life of another without consent is unacceptable but in certain situations like George’s, he has to decide due to Lennie’s mental disorder that was leading him into unpleasant situations. George is an admirable character who choose to protect and do justice to his distressed friend,
Consistently throughout the story George and Lennie were there for each other; in fact towards the very beginning Lennie and George discussed how they were better off than most guys because they had each other (14). When George killed Lennie a part of him died too, George knew murdering Lennie would hurt him mentally and emotionally. However he did it because he wanted what was best for his friend no matter the cost. His actions were altruistic and that made his decision the more favorable one. Another instance when George was selfless was when he gave up his dream. Throughout the story George and Lennie dreamed of and worked towards owning their own piece of land together. However, after discovering Curley’s wife dead, George returned to reality and informed Candy that they would, “never do her” (94). After losing his friend George understood the impossibility of achieving the American Dream. Beforehand George knew he would not want to live out his dream without Lennie, so by protecting Lennie and giving up on his own dream he put Lennie above himself. Conversely, someone may believe that George's actions were selfish and that he benefits himself by killing Lennie. After George comes after Lennie, the dim-witted man asks if George was going to yell at him. Reluctantly George told him “If I was alone, I could live so easy,” (103). Although George said
Is George’s Love for Lennie Sympathy or is it an Unconscious Effort to Make up for Lennie’s Mental Weakness?
There are many types of friendships good ones and bad ones. For example in the novela “Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck George and Lennie are the main characters of this novela. George and Lennie face many obstacles throughout their journey. George helped Lennie and lead him throughout this journey. George is a good friend towards Lennie in my opinion because he does so much for him.
Lennie thinks of George as his only friend, his guardian, someone who he can trust and depend on, someone who had accepted him for who he is despite his childlike tendencies. Every time he did something wrong, his only thoughts would be of George’s disapproval. “I did a real bad thing. I shouldn’t have done that. George’ll be mad at me.
After Lennie gets into the debacle with Curley’s wife, he runs to the oasis described at the beginning of the book. George fears the men will tear Lennie apart and murder him. He also knew he would be institutionalized, or “caged” if he survived the attack. He had the moral clarity that let him see that killing Lennie was the best thing for him. When George kills Lennie, it’s a kind of mercy killing.
George understands that he can’t hide Lennie from the world forever and that the natural order of things is that the strong pick off the weak, and he will eventually have to let Lennie go. This motivates him to seize reality, meaning he had to kill Lennie, which itself was a sign of tremendous growth in himself. Killing Lennie had many effects on George; one of them being that he became one of the men he’d tell Lennie stories about. George believed that he and Lennie were not like the other migrant workers – travelling alone and spending all their earning on a whim. When George would te...
‘If you don’t want me, you just’ got to say so, and I’ll go off in those hills right there.’” (Stenbeck, 1). This shows true friendship, because the reader can pick out how they are both being virtuous towards each other. Lennie is upset, and wants to leave, so George wants to show how much he cares to keep him around since he enjoys him. They truly care, and do not expect anything from each other, just the care within the bond they have.
The famed nurses study from Harvard found “Not having a close friend is as detrimental to your health as smoking.” Lennie and George’s friendship is necessary to keep the better for each other. Throughout the story, Lennie and George need each other and look out for one another no matter what. Lennie and George’s friendship and journey throughout the story symbolizes the struggles to achieve the American dream. Steinbeck, in the story Of Mice and Men, combines characterization and symbolism to prove friends do whats best for eachother.
What is your definition of a true friend? Well, to me, a true friend is someone who understands you, accepts you for who you are, and is willing to do anything for you. While reading John Steinbeck’s classic, Of Mice and Men, George and Lennie maintain a true friendship despite all the ups and downs they encounter. After Lennie Small, a man as gigantic as a mammoth with a pea-sized brain is caught touching a girl’s dress in the town of Weed, he and his best friend, an average migrant worker, George Milton, travel a strenuous journey to the town of Soledad and start working on a ranch. The young men come to realize that they have a true, brotherly bond and nothing can separate them. Even though the book has its rough spots, Steinbeck portrays the true bond of friendship that even people as close as siblings have. Throughout the story, George
