The dictionary defines a Christian as, “A person professing belief in Jesus as the Christ, or in the religion based on the teachings of Jesus” (Agnes, p. 261). While this is technically true, this definition is not the whole truth. Christianity is a complex religion that has detailed theology. However, not all Christians agree on the finer points of the religion. This is how the different denomination of Christianity formed, through disagreements in theology. However, the central beliefs of most denominations are the same or similar. Most Christians fundamentally believe in one God, in the Trinity, that God inspired men to write the Bible, and in the salvation of man through Jesus Christ.
Christianity, like most other religions, believes in a higher being. However, unlike religions such as Buddhism, Christian believe in only one God, who has three persons. The three persons make up the Trinity. The Christian God is unique because of the Trinity. Brian Doak defines the Bible as, “…A series of writings used in different forms and revered as sacred text by Christians…” (p. 142). The Bible was written by multiple people over many years. The Bible is made up of two main parts, the Old Testament, and the New Testament. The Old Testament takes place from the creation of the universe up till before Jesus’ birth. It covers the history of the Israelites, the laws God laid out for the Israelites, and much more. The New Testament takes place from the birth of Jesus through the founding of the early Christian church. The New Testament has the story of the life of Jesus, as well as many letters written by leaders of the early Church.
