In Ralph Ellison’s novel, Invisible Man, the narrator who is the main character goes through many trials and tribulations. Within his journey he was able to learn a tremendous amount of information about himself as well as the society he lived in. Although in order for this to happen he had to exile from his former hometown. After graduating high school the narrator went off to college and had the honor of driving one of the schools founders. While driving Mr. Norton, one of the school founders, the narrator went on a tangent about different things that has happened on campus. He soon mentioned Trueblood and his actions with his daughter to Mr. Norton, Afterwards the narrator led Mr. Norton to the bar/asylum. This is when the real troubles begin. Mr. Bledsoe, the college’s president, found out about the narrators doings and expelled him. When he expelled the narrator, Mr. Bledsoe sent him to New York with seven letters to get a job. By the narrator being exiled he now has a chance to experience life on his own and use the knowledge from his experience to enrich his life and others. He was able to think for himself instead of allowing the brotherhood or Bledsoe to do it for him. The narrator was able to live and understand the mistakes he made and allow it to enrich his knowledge of society. Throughout the novel he trusts that various people and groups are helping him when in reality they are using him for their own benefit. They give him the illusion that he is useful and important, all the while running him in circles. Douglass’s life in the city was very different from his life in the country, and living in the city changed his life. In the city, he worked as a ship caulker which he excelled at, compared to a a field hand in the country which he was not skilled at. In the city he was treated better and always fed, but in the country he was experienced lack of food most of the time. The city opened his mind to escaping, and with the help of abolitionists he was able to successfully escape. In the country he did not knowledgable people to help him and was turned in by an ignorant, loyal slave. However the reader of this Narrative knows that the slaveholders’ attempt to convert a man into a slave was unsuccessful in Douglass’ case. His kind hearted mistress sparked a fire within Douglass when she taught him to read. That fire of manhood eventually raised within his heart and his manpower erased his slave like attitudes, and made a slave into a powerful man. Next he was ready to escape from South which was further a big turning point in his life. His desire for freedom was as strong as his desire to read. He said, “This was what I wanted” (92). Douglass tried to save others from abusing by writing “several protections”(94). At the end of the book, Douglass’ huge change of position made him a powerful speaker, teacher, and saver from a passive slave.
Being in a state of emotional discomfort is almost like being insane. For the person in this discomfort they feel deranged and confused and for onlookers they look as if they have escaped a mental hospital. On The first page of chapter fifteen in the novel Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, the main character is in a state of total discomfort and feels as if he is going mad. From the reader’s perspective it seems as if he is totally out of control of his body. This portrayal of the narrator is to express how torn he is between his two selves. He does not know how to tell Mary, the woman who saved him and has been like a mother to him, that he is leaving her for a new job, nor does he know if he wants to. His conflicting thoughts cause him to feel and seem a little mad. The author purposefully uses the narrator’s divergent feelings to make portray him as someone uncomfortable in is own skin. This tone is portrayed using intense diction, syntax, and extended metaphors.
The reader is first introduced to the idea of Douglass’s formation of identity outside the constraints of slavery before he or she even begins reading the narrative. By viewing the title page and reading the words “The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave, written by himself” the reader sees the advancement Douglass made from a dependent slave to an independent author (Stone 134). As a slave, he was forbidden a voice with which he might speak out against slavery. Furthermore, the traditional roles of slavery would have had him uneducated—unable to read and incapable of writing. However, by examining the full meaning of the title page, the reader is introduced to Douglass’s refusal to adhere to the slave role of uneducated and voiceless. Thus, even before reading the work, the reader knows that Douglass will show “how a slave was made a man” through “speaking out—the symbolic act of self-definition” (Stone 135).
Throughout Ralph Ellison’s novel, Invisible Man, the main character dealt with collisions and contradictions, which at first glance presented as negative influences, but in retrospect, they positively influenced his life, ultimately resulting in the narrator developing a sense of independence. The narrator, invisible man, began the novel as gullible, dependent, and self-centered. During the course of the book, he developed into a self-determining and assured character. The characters and circumstances invisible man came across allowed for this growth.
In the autobiography written by Frederick Douglass, it gives the reader details on the everyday life of past American slaves from both his eyes and from others that kept detailed record that they either witnessed or lived. Douglass describes firsthand of what he witnessed as well as his insight to personal experiences from being a slave to becoming a free man. Only when it came down to it he was never truly a free man, he was a runaway that risked everything he had worked for and if ever caught could be forced to return to his master or be killed for his action.
In the “Invisible Man Prologue” by Ralph Ellison we get to read about a man that is under the impressions he is invisible to the world because no one seems to notice him or who he is, a person just like the rest but do to his skin color he becomes unnoticeable. He claims to have accepted the fact of being invisible, yet he does everything in his power to be seen. Merriam-Webster dictionary defines Invisible as incapable by nature of being seen and that’s how our unnamed narrator expresses to feel. In the narrators voice he says: “I am a man of substance, of flesh and bone, fiber and liquids- and I might even be said to possess a mind. The narrator of the novel is not only a black man, but also a complex American searching for the reality of existence in a technological society that is characterized by swift change (Weinberg 1197). The story of Invisible Man is a series of experiences through which its naive hero learns, to his disillusion and horror, the ways of the world. The novel is one that captures the whole of the American experience. It incorporates the obvious themes of alienation and racism. However, it has deeper themes for the reader to explore, ranging from the roots of black culture to the need for strong Black leadership to self-discovery.
Frederick Douglass was born into the lifelong, evil, bondage of slavery. His autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave, Written by Himself, depicts his accomplishments. The narrative, however, is not only the story of his success. It is not simply a tale of his miraculous escape from slavery. Frederick Douglass' narrative is, in fact, an account of his tremendous strides through literacy.
