My art is shows symbols if black power and even problems that African-Americans face in the U.S. Some of the things that are displayed on the art piece is Trayvon Martin’s symbol which is the hoodie with the hands up. Another one is a scale showing equality, and a symbol of gun control because many African-Americans are dying because of the deadly weapons the government funds to the police. There is an African-American woman forming the Black Lives Matter fist. I chose to make the fist a womans fist because women are powerful and I support women and the rights they are fighting for. The primary thing that persuaded my current viewpoint on race relations was the George Zimmerman trial for the homicide of Trayvon Martin. This was a case that took place when I was relatively young, around the age of ten, so I feel that the event has shaped the way that I view racism today. My mother studied racism for her degree, so I was never particularly ignorant about the topic of race. The historical mistreatment, and oppression of African Americans lives remains an indisputable fact in the history of the United States. The “Black Lives Matter” activist movement focuses on the death of African American lives in the hands of police. The movement raises awareness for police brutality and injustices minorities receive in the United States. The movement calls for an end to Mass Incarceration, Police Brutality, Racial Profiling, and police militarization immediately. To begin my research I looked into the “Black Lives Matter” movement on various news sources. I then conducted research using academic databases, such as Opposing viewpoints in context. Lastly, I collected statistics from various reliable encyclopedias. The sources allowed me to narrow my subject and develop a good response. Minorities are discriminated by law enforcement, and the research will prove this.
This project has helped me in a way to make a decision on how important this upcoming election is to my heritage as a black man and to take full advantage of this opportunity.
The black community has suffered from years of social inequality and oppression. Social issues such as the criminalization of black males is a frequent problem in society. These social issues highlight the reforms that need to be done to ensure that the nation is not consistently targeting and prejudging others based on their race, especially when dealing with legal authorities. In the article, The Editorial Board writes about what they believe African Americans are facing as challenges in society today, including the all-too-common police killings of unarmed African-Americans across the country. Somehow when saying black lives matter it was like saying all life matter don’t matter. It’s a touchy subject due to why people view things and for most case I can understand. I did not realize that the NAACP organization were so involved on the local, state, and national level. President Theodis Pace made me personally feel welcomed and opened to express my personal thoughts, desires, and feelings. This activity gave me an opportunity to realize how much impact the Kankakee County Branch 3035 of the NAACP has on the entire community. With some of the data shared by President Theodis Pace made me feel unaware of the injustices that minorities are currently facing in our communities. In addition, President Theodis Pace invited Paris Williams and myself to attend monthly meetings and events. The history of the NAACP organization has shown many inequalities that minorities have had to endear throughout history, but this organization has stood up for their beliefs on equality for all Americans. When a person thinks about Black Lives Matter, he or she may visualize African Americans fighting for justice and equality. The movement Black Lives Matter was created to bring awareness to systematic racism, police brutality and social injustice that African Americans face on a daily basis. In contrary, All Lives Matter downplays the fact that black people are looked down upon in society. All Lives Matter may seem like an innocent title, but it emphasizes that justice for black people is not necessary. Black Lives Matter is not a movement that believes all lives do not matter; nevertheless, it highlights the fact that black lives are taken for granted by the judicial system.
African Americans fighting for their rights has always been a conflict that I have heard about growing up. When we got to brainstorm topic ideas, I decided to do either African American voting rights or women’s rights. As a young teenage girl, I felt that discussing women’s rights would be very important to me. But, I also knew that my project would be very opinionated. One of the most prominent grassroots movements currently at work in the United States is, undoubtedly, the Black Lives Matter movement. A multifaceted reform movement, it tackles the issue of institutionalized racism against black people in the United States. The movement began as a hashtag on Twitter in 2013 in response to the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the Treyvon Martin case. Zimmerman shot Martin to death, claiming it was in self defense as he felt the young man looked threatening because it was dark and he was wearing a hoodie. He was acquitted of both manslaughter and second degree murder. Activists felt that this case was an extreme example of how little value black lives seem to have to the greater community.
