Traumatic brain injuries in football has been and still is a major issue. “It is estimated that 10% of head and spinal cord injuries are due to sports-related activities.”1 The most common brain injury in football is a concussion. A concussion is “a complex pathophysiological process affecting the brain induced by traumatic biomechanical forces. It can be caused either by a direct blow to the head or by an impulsive force that lead to acceleration of the head without direct blunt trauma to the cranium.”10 These injuries can be mild or severe. Research shows that the brain has a method of compensation to deal with injury in which it regulates the blood flow to the injured area and decreases the metabolic processes. Unfortunately, if the brain sustains a second injury during the healing process it can lead to an inability of the brain to compensate for injury. The frequency of football players suffering multiple concussions is fairly high since football is a contact sport. “In 2000, a study surveyed 1,090 former NFL players about concussions suffered during their careers. The survey showed that sixty percent of the players responded that they had suffered at least one concussion, and twenty-six percent had suffered three or more concussions.
