Self-analysis of Transoceanic Stereotypes First, I think what I have learned outside of school is more memorable than my academic learning experiences, and I think that I have more insights about which topic I have chosen. These factors would make the topic easier to write for me. Second, I chose Stereotypes as the title of my essay at the beginning. However, after I was revising the essay, I think that Stereotypes was too general. So, I changed it to Transoceanic Stereotypes. The essay is based on my personal experiences, and tells how I faced transoceanic stereotypes when I traveled to United States from China three years ago. The main idea of the essay is that I learned that stereotypes are not unilateral; to experiences the world by oneself
can eliminate one-sided view. Third, I use a quotation to start the narrative, which is a hook to attract readers’ attention. The first paragraph not only tells about the back ground of the story, but also gives the statement of the theme. The body paragraph is written in chronological order, and I use two anecdotes to support the main idea. The last two paragraphs are considered as conclusion to further restate the theme. I consider the tone of the essay is explaining. Meanwhile, I would like to attract the readers who are concerning about the social diversity. Fourth, my peer reviewer was confused about the purposes of my travel. Since I think that it was not related to the main idea too much, I did not give much more details about it. At last, as a non-native language writer, the grammar, sentence structures and literary technique are the shortages of my writing. I still need to improve them.
In the essays, “Turkeys in the Kitchen” by Dave Barry, and “Just Walk on By” by Brent Staples, they argue the theme of gender, and racial stereotypes that have been present in our world from the very beginning. Barry suggests through a sarcastic and humors tone that gender stereotypes have been present since before the start of time; he uses a highly conversational style to prove this, as well as narrates to give the reader a better understanding of exactly what he’s talking about. Staples, on the other hand, uses a more authoritative tone to support his theme of racial stereotyping; he also uses the mode of rhetoric exemplification to his benefit, and is able to show the audience that this issue is just as important as the gender stereotypes that take place in our society still today. Barry believes that despite the fact that people are against stereotypes they still will always fall back on them; and Staples believes that people need to change themselves in order to not fit into those common stereotypes. They prove this through the history of gender discrimination in the 19th century factories, and through the 1970-1980’s and also up until today’s racial discrimination in the media. However, if we all hate stereotypes, then why do we always seem to be falling back on them?
One of the major stereotypes is racial/stereotypical thoughts against Mexicans. Lots of people say that all Mexicans like soccer and/or professionally play soccer. Also people like to joke around and say that all Mexicans like tacos and burritos. Even though there might be some kids that are of mexican heritage that don’t like soccer or don’t like tacos or burritos. Just because so one is Mexican or even just looks Mexican doesn't mean that they play soccer, eat tacos, listen to marrache, or that their families are poor.
Stereotypes are everywhere and can often create problems for people, however they become even more detrimental to teens, especially at schools. Writer and science correspondent for the NRA, Shankar Vedantam, in his article, “How a Self-Fulfilling Stereotype Can Drag Down Performance,” explains that stereotypes can hurt the performance of the person that it is associated with. He supports his claim by first explaining that how well people do on tests are determined by who administers the questions, then he explains that studies show that when people take tests and they are reminded of negative stereotypes that associate with them, then they don’t do as well, and finally he states that the studies are being widely ignored by all the people who should take heed of the findings, such as test makers and college acceptance people. Vedantam’s purpose is to tell you about the research conducted by Huang in order to inform you that stereotypes can affect performance on tests. In my 9th grade class at Point Loma High School, we were given questions about stereotypes from our teacher to interview two students.
As an Asian American, I have several points to discuss in terms of stereotypes. Through a variety of media, Asian Americans are portrayed by socially constructed stereotypes that are either positive or negative to our community. By explaining the definition of a stereotype and listing three specific ones identified, these points reflect our cultural values. These stereotypes include the concept of model minority, the insinuation that Asians are highly skilled at mathematics, and assumptions of our food ways. In each stereotype, I integrate my own experiences to provide a deeper depth of meaning that will allow one to evaluate whether these stereotypes do mirror our society’s customs.

In many circles of the world, various groups of people distinguish themselves from one another through religion, language, culture, and sometimes gender. People also develop stereotypes about a particular group of people in order to identify them. However, most of the time, these stereotypes hold true for only some members of a group. Sometimes, these stereotypes are just plain misconceptions that do not even apply to the group they claim to be. Stereotypes are placed on people because it is a way to easily identify what type of person or ethnicity an individual is.
The animosity between Mexicans and Americans had an extensive history, based on various stereotypes and a lack of cultural understanding. Americans in the Southwest believed that Mexicans were, “lazy, shiftless, jealous, cowardly, bigoted, superstitious, backward, and immoral.” The Mexicans, however, thought Americans were “arrogant, overbearing, aggressive, conniving, rude, unreliable, and dishonest.” Tensions peaked during the 1846-1848 Mexican-American War, in which the United States rapidly and cruelly dispatched their Mexican foes, committing horrendous atrocities that General Winfield Scott claimed would “make Heaven weep and every American of Christian morals blush for his country.” To many Americans, the war affirmed their beliefs
Being Italian, people deem me based on notorious Italian stereotypes in that I am habitually late and am greasy and dirty. Stereotypes are inaccurate and degrading as they ignore the humanity and uniqueness of people and so I believe they should be challenged. The message of the text concerns everyone as stereotypes apply to all members of society whether they are based on race, religion, gender or class. According to Oxford Dictionary, stereotype is a preconceived and oversimplified idea of the characteristics which typify a person or situation (Oxford). But in reality it is more like a subtle form of bias, such as those based on people's gender, race or occupation. For example, Americans are generally considered to be arrogant and materialistic while Asians, on the other hand, are expected to be shrewd but reserved. Obviously, not all Americans are arrogant and not all Asians are shrewd. So, if one just assumes what a person is like and don't look at each person as an individual, he or she is likely to make errors in estimates of a person's character. Such biases are easily ignored, yet are a fact of life. These biases can affect how people see others, as well as themselves, which may lead to unexpected consequences. Thus, stereotyping can influence the communication and understanding between people, usually in a negative way. To examine the side effect brought by stereotyping, I will go through Achebe’s Things Fall Apart and Duras’ The Lover and analyze the roles played by stereotype. The protagonists of both books are set in a background, to which they do not originally belong or where is colonized by foreign invaders. Therefore, stereotype becomes a mutual theme and plays an important role in these two books.
In our global economy requiring functional and respectful relationships between nations, prejudice and stereotypes can be a destructive force both in the world and in individual societies, especially in diverse ones.
Stereotypes limit effective communication and “blind the eyes.” Similarly, the stereotypes in Native Son had made barriers resulting in problems not just for Bigger, but for everyone that was involved with him. According to the Webster's Dictionary stereotyping is defined as a fixed conventional notion or conception of an individual or group of people, heldby a number of people. Stereotypes can be basic or complex generalizations which people apply to individuals or groups based on their appearance, behaviour and beliefs. Stereotypes are found everywhere. Though our world seems to be improving in many ways it seems almost impossible to liberate it from stereotypes.
Even though the world is filled with stereotypes and misconceptions about people, we can take mental steps toward overcoming those stereotypes. Being aware of our inner thoughts and feelings and how they affect our beliefs and actions is a constant battle, but will help reduce stereotypes in our own mind. Staying open minded to different religions, cultures, and races helps one get a better understanding about others for themself. Most of all, we can overcome stereotypes by taking into account individual differences and using factual information instead of assumptions (“Overcoming Stereotypes”).

Stereotypes are a generalization of a race and they oversimplify reality. Common misconceptions involving stereotypes happen all the time when it comes to international business, that’s why it is best to do some research and understand a culture before doing business with them so that you aren’t offending them; the same way we all learned about ecuador’s different aspects such as their educational and economical factors. From the begin of our class we have been talk about stereotypes about Islam, and we can always see some news information about stereotypes of Islam. From a wide range of speaking, if we do not bring our personal discrimination to talk about stereotypes, it is acceptable. Because since there have more than one thing in the world, everything is comparable and the imprefession from the compare difference will become stereotype for another side.
