Accepting Transgenders Transgender is when an individual tries to switch genders. The term “trangender” is becoming more and more well known throughout the United States. Research has proven that “65% of Americans said they have a close friend or family member who is homosexual, while 9% said that they have one who is transgender” (Steinmetz 40). Research has shown that nearly nine out of ten Americans believe “that transgender people deserve the same rights and protections as other Americans” (Wong). Many trans-individuals decide later on in their lives that they want to switch genders, and other people argue that they were born the wrong gender, making it a very controversial topic today. They want to fix “natures mistake”. Most trans-people seek to bring their bodies more into an alignment with their gender identity (GLADD). Trans-people have expressed their body before their transition that they were “born in a suffocating costume that they were unable to take off” (Steinmetz 40). Sex is a biological concept. Gender identity is an “internal sense” that our society plays a role. “For some children, what’s between their legs doesn’t match what’s between their ears-they insist they were born not the wrong body” (Goldberg 69-70). Most trans-children try to hide their feelings when they are younger, because they simply want to fit in and blend with their surroundings. They know that it is not normal, and others may think that they are “freaks of nature”. Some trans-children are rejected by their own families, but other families allow their children to live in the gender that they identity with in order to save them and pursue their dreams (Goldberg 70). People tell trans-individuals that they accept them for who they are, unique, and that they are special. There are many steps for trans-people to undergo in order to change their identity. “Typically, each document such as a birth certificate, passport, driver’s license, Social Security card, health insurance cards, and so on, must be changed at a time” (Teich 58). Each state, city, and company have its own rules and regulations that they require in order to change their sex marker. Some states require medical procedures to undergo along with a surgeon’s letter stating that the person has undergone “gender-affirming” surgery. “Legal name change normally goes thought the local court is approved by a judge” (Teich 59). The states that are most accepting of trans-individuals are California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington (Refinery 29). Legal actions that take place when trans-people want to change their identities make it hard, but not
