When I hear the words “Spirituality” and “Religion,” I think about “Spirituality.” I was never taught “Religion” nor was I interested in it. The closest I have ever been to feeling like I believed in something was when I learned about Transcendentalism. I see Transcendentalism as a way all living things connect. I believe Transcendentalism relates more to “Spirituality” than “Religion.” Although I don’t believe in a greater being, I do believe we all connect in more ways than one.
While it didn’t change my thoughts on “Spirituality,” Little Buddha did make me think about “Religion.” One scene in Little Buddha reveals who the reincarnation of Lama Dorje will be; but, instead of one person, said all three of the children became reincarnations
of Lama Dorje. I found such “Triangulation” surprising because I thought reincarnation would leave one person as Lama Dorje. By saying Lama Dorje reincarnated into three people, would the Buddhists still be following their “Religion”? This scene made me realize that “Religions” may not be as structured as I had thought. The films Siddhartha and The Razor’s Edge both follow the theme that while it may be easy to follow a materialistic lifestyle, one cannot find meaning in money and fancy clothes. The Razor’s Edge does not relate mortality to “Religion” as much as Siddhartha does, which can be difficult to understand if one does not know much about “Religion.” In The Razor’s Edge, Larry Darrell, traumatized by his friend’s sacrifice in World War I, begins to question the “meaning of life.” The thought of death coming at any moment leaves Larry realizing he must use the time he
Religion has 7 core attributes that allow someone to call it a religion, these include Narrative, Doctrine, Emotional, Material, Ethical, Ritual and Social. These seven attributes help individuals identify what can be classified as a “religion”, however spirituality has no “easy way” to identifying it. Spirituality can be found within the individual looking for their “meaning” but not physically expressed.
In this essay, I will compare the philosophies of transcendentalism and anti-transcendentalism through the writings of Thoreau and Emerson vs. Melville. In Thoreau’s excerpt of “Walden”, he tested the transcendentalist philosophy through experience. Emerson’s transcendental writing style is displayed in “Nature”. In Melville’s excerpt of Moby Dick, he exhibits anti-transcendentalism in his work.
Although not looked upon as a widely popular topic in the 21st century, transcendentalism has played a role in everyone's life. Action of the tenets and values of transcendentalist people vary. Religious traditions from each generation amplify the movement along with the social and political activity.
Transcendentalism is based on the belief that institutions in the society corrupt an individual’s purity. Transcendentalists believe that people are at their best when they are truly independent and self-reliant. They also believe that from independence and self-reliance, a true community is formed. Even though Transcendentalism is not recognized, it still exists in the modern society. Though not clearly outspoken as in Emerson and Thoreau’s times, many people in today’s society still have transcendental beliefs. Transcendental ideals are found in songs, films, books and other works such as media and advertisements. One example is the song “Get up, Stand up,” by Bob Marley, it is found to be influenced and has inspiration of transcendental elements such as Solitude (individuality), self-reliance, non-conformism (anti-institution), anti-materialism, nature and spirituality.
Modern day transcendentalists are not easily found anymore in society. It is hard to pinpoint exactly what a transcendentalist is. By being your own self, following your own standards and being yourself, you become transcendental. By looking at the Robertsons’ way of life, they would make a tremendous example of modern day transcendentalists. Their religion, love of nature, and individualism create a transcendental lifestyle.

“The Transcendentalist adopts the whole connection of spiritual doctrine. He believes in miracle, in the perpetual openness of the human mind to new influx of light and power; he believes in inspiration, and in ecstasy.”(Emerson 196). These two lines written by Ralph Waldo Emerson exemplify the whole movement of transcendentalist writers and what they believed in. Though to the writers, transcendentalism was a fight for a belief, unknown to them they could have been fighting for the betterment of human health. The transcendentalist writings of Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson have directly affected the health of modern society through the idea of transcendental meditation. Through modern science, scientists have linked increases in health among individuals through the use of transcendental meditation.
Many people have theories and philosophies about life in general. There have been hundreds of thousands of books published by many different people on the ideas of people in the past and the present. Transcendentalism falls in amongst all of these ideas. There have been articles, essays, poems, and even books written about this subject. Transcendentalism has effected many people since the philosophy was first introduced. The idea was complex and hard to grasp for many commoners and therefore it was understood by few people, and some would think that the idea was not understood at all and that was part of the idea. Henry David Thoreau once stated about himself, “I should have told them at once that I was a transcendentalist. That would have been the shortest way of telling them that they would not understand my explanations” (Reuben 1).
"There is a time in every man's education where he arrives at the conviction that is envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide," this quote is from Ralph Emerson's essay "Self-Reliance" and this quote says that you shouldn't envy or imitate someone instead you should find your individual traits and characteristics. The transcendentalist movement took place in the mid 1800s in the United States of America time where multiple people started come up with ideas and beliefs so that you could live a better and father or founder of transcendentalism is Ralph Waldo Emerson. Some of the ideas that these people believed in were self-reliance, civil disobedience, individualism, and having a close connection to nature. They also supported the abolition of slavery and protested against the relocation of Native Americans. The song "The Anthem" was recorded by Good Charlotte in 2002

Transcendentalism Transcendentalism was a movement in philosophy, literature, and religion that emerged and was popular in the nineteenth century New England because of a need to redefine man and his place in the world in response to a new and changing society. The industrial revolution, universities, westward expansion, urbanization and immigration all made the life in a city like Boston full of novelty and turbulence. Transcendentalism was a reaction to an impoverishment of religion and mechanization of consciousness of eighteenth century rational doctrines that ceased to be satisfying. After the success of the American Revolution and the Industrial Revolution, an American man emerged confident and energetic. However, with the release of nervous energy, an American was forced to look at a different angle at his place in the world and society.
Transcendentalism is a philosophy that has been passed down through the ages. Just like the world and the people that inhabit it, transcendentalism has changed over time. Since technology has advanced over time, people have thought differently about things. Even though many people have changed their thinking, many others haven’t. There are some people who have slight transcendentalist features. Others have strong transcendentalist features and like to spread the word as often as possible.
I consider myself to be a moderately spiritual and religious person. I believe in God. I am a Roman Catholic and try to follow the teachings of the Church. My belief is a personal choice, and I use it as a moral guid...
After learning what a transcendentalist is and what they do i've decided that I wouldn't want to be part of that. A transcendentalist is a philosophy that started in the mid 1800’s that promotes intuitive, spiritual thinking instead of scientific thinking based on material things. Throughout this unit I've learned how to join, their beliefs, negative impacts, and benefits to join.
Spirituality refers to the perspective of that which is valued in life, and that which must to be upheld and defended under any and all circumstances, regardless of the social environment and surrounding conditions.
