High schools throughout the world are predominately set up in 2 ways, traditional schedule or block schedule. Traditional scheduling requires students to take six to eight classes a day while block scheduling only requires students to take four classes a day. Block schedule is still a fairly new concept that has been integrated into many schools over the past fifteen years. Block scheduling consists of eight classes total that students take in increments of four two hour classes a semester. Traditional scheduling consists of six to eight classes that last anywhere from forty-five to fifty-five minutes that students take all year. Having only four classes a day, students have less homework and less material to study each night. With the extra time, students can go to sleep earlier so they are more prepared for the upcoming day. Not only is block schedule less stress on the students, but for the teachers as well. Since teachers have fewer classes to teach, they have half the grading than those of traditional scheduling. Teachers are also provided with longer planning periods, so they can use the extra time to come up with new and improved ways of conveying their material to their classes.
Since there is more time in each class, teachers can go more in depth into their subjects. With two hours rather than forty-five to fifty-five, teachers can properly get their point across and go deeper into the topic so students can understand it more accurately. This also provides for more one-on-one teaching. With less students and more class time, teachers can help more students individually if needed. Extended class periods and block scheduling will improve student’s grades and can diminish their stress level significantly. A normal day in block scheduling consists of only four classes a day, alternating each day. These classes would last 120 minutes each, with the same 5 minute passing periods in between classes. This scheduling gives teachers more time to explain their lesson. It also gives students time to recover from the late nights due to sports and other activities because they only have four classes a day. Their homework for these classes isn’t due for another day, so they don’t have to stress over getting it done. 120 minute classes combined with blocked scheduling increases the amount of time teachers have for instruction and will overall increase the student’s knowledge, in turn, raising their grades.
Finally, having longer passing periods would benefit our health. I have something called patellofemoral pain, so when I walk fast in the halls my knees start to hurt really bad. Also, when you’re rushing to get to your next class you can slam the locker door in a hurry and hurt someone. We never have enough time to go to the bathroom which can lead to health problems in the future. With the four minute passing period we don’t have time to socialize with friends which is important for your mental health. When you’re rushing down the hall you could fall and trip, hurting yourself or someone in the process. These are some of the reasons having a longer passing period would benefit our health.
The phrase “year-round” scares students and parents alike. Some argue that students attending school year-round will get so burnt out that the new schedule would be counterproductive. However, the term “year-round” is misleading. Students would not go to school non-stop twelve months out of the year. Instead, students would attend in blocks separated by short but frequent breaks (Hapka). The National Education Association gives insight to the block system:

If more schools switched to block scheduling, people would notice a difference in the student’s grades and also the teacher’s attitudes. N.L. Flexibility in the classroom, less homework for students and fewer classes being prepared for, teachers found the classroom to be a more relaxing environment. Teachers find it helpful that they are able to finish their lesson plans on time and that they can answer students’ questions as well.
More courses should try to incorporate 5 minutes of the class to get students focused and ready to learn. Sometimes students are too preoccupied with other problems that they do not focus on the present moment; making them less likely to focus on the course.
In addition to that, when the passing period time is set to 10 minutes, students will have a more likely chance to get to class on time. For example, some students have their classes at the front of the school for first period, and then have to go to the back of the school for second period and don’t have enough time and get a tardy for being late . In college, students receive a higher education making it a lot more challenging than high school classes. This is specifically so if students did not have a challenging academic experience in high school. Classes are chosen based on major and curriculum. Professors typically give three to five assignments per week but this, of course, varies on the major. One major difference when it comes to classes is that in college, students are able to choose their schedule that will fit their newly adult and busy life, whereas in high school you are not able to do
Less absences will increase the chance and opportunity for learning and will miss out on major assignments that will take much time to catch up on. According to some school districts ," Teachers and student absences have decreased with the four-day school week. The reason that the decrease of teachers and students' absences is logical because that one extra day will help them finish what they need to in the right amount of time. Another issue that can be prevented with a fours day of school is the increasing drop out rate and disciplinary referrals in high school. Having disciplinary referrals could cause a bad impression on teachers and colleges. Students tend to learn better when they don't miss school. . Almost every student has had a study hall. Study halls are a huge waste of time because students end up just sitting around getting themselves into trouble. How is one to study when these are quiet study halls? Studying is much easier with a partner where each can quiz each other aloud. With block scheduling students can waste eighty minutes a day if they have a study hall. That’s an hour and twenty minutes where a class of importance could be put in.
Class size makes a huge impact on how the student learns. Along with many other things, there is more to the amount of kids in class than most people think. The quality one on one time is affected. Along with that, important questions that the students needs clarity on from the teacher might not be able to be answered because so many other students are in the room asking their own question. Students learn in their own ways. Teachers have to be flexible to how their students learn and in order to do that they need to know their students on a personal level. When class sizes are large, it effects students in negative ways in their learning.
For example, if time were to be added for specifically people that were failing it would honestly be a fantastic change in people's grades. Additionally, i think people that are having a hard time with their classes will know have the time to sit, listen, and actually learn with the extra time given. Also doing more work will will just get them ready for next year all of the other years of school. More learning for students absolutely will help them understand the work because if they constantly keep on doing more work they are going to get used to the work and really understand
Having a block schedule overall is very beneficial to students because although they receive a couple extra assignments they have an overall less workload for their homework which leads to less stress, the students perform better even with the extended class periods, the teachers and students have more time which leads to better lesson plans, individual time to reflect on information that they learned rather than cramming in new information, and it helps to form a better relationship between student and teacher. First and foremost, block scheduling overall decreases the stress levels that the students have. In a traditional schedule students have 7 to 8 classes a day which leads to more work for them to do. In a block schedule, however, the students only have up to 4 classes and in those classes since they have increased time they are able to get more work done. Schoolwork
I have been in both block schedule and seven period days, I would prefer block scheduling over seven period days. I’m not saying they have to change the whole school schedule but ask for the student’s opinion before they change the schedule. Having seven classes a day does not only affect the students, but teachers too. Seven classes a day means only 48 minutes for a teacher to get through a lesson and assign homework. These short class periods mean that the teacher must rush through their lesson plan; this makes it harder for student to comprehend what they are being told.
Each student needs the teacher to give them more than five minutes of attention to them when they are in class. A recent study published in the American Journal of Public Health revealed that reducing class sizes in elementary schools may be more cost-effective than most public health and medical interventions. This is because students in smaller classes are more likely to graduate from high school, and high school graduates earn more and also enjoy significantly better health than high school dropouts.” The article is stating that children with a group of 20 students in class a sufficient for the students. Student can ask assistants form teacher without having to wait too long than in a lager class it becomes chaotic with too many students. In a smaller classroom student comprehend much more of the lesson and this will help student in the future from dropping out for school. As Gato stated in Source A, “Is this deadly routine really necessary?” Our schedule is always being switched around to try to suit us better, but it doesn’t change that we will still have 7 periods a day for 5 days a week. In my opinion, if we were to have a break from our classes at some point in the middle of the day, even as a study hall, we may do better as students. Source G is a student handbook. In it, it says “students are expected to report to class on time and attend all classes regularly.”
