Tradesmen In Feudalism
In the Middle Ages, people were born into different classes. Whichever class a person was born into, that class would determine that particular person’s life and fate. It would usually be the same for all of the other people in that class (if they didn’t catch a disease or anything like that). The particular people who I am talking about though are the tradesmen. They were hard workers some of the time, and for the rest of their time, they would spend traveling and trading goods “around the world” (just around Europe). They had very little free time, so they would spend very little time with their friends and families.
Then again, that is for a regular ranked tradesman. The “rich and powerful” (higher ranked) tradesmen had lots of spare time, and would mostly spend it with their families and friends, while they sent “servants” to do some of the work for them. The higher ranked tradesmen also got a lot better education than a lot of the other tradesmen back then (the ones that had a regular ranking). But the type of education that they got was not the s...
In conclusion, While Clovis King of the Franks, the serf and the Southampton wool merchant each related to their individual communities in their own way, yet related to medieval society in general in a way that shaped it into the society we study today. It’s interesting how people can be so different socially and economically yet can still have an effect on society as a whole.
The Medieval West was an era of country folk and rural communities. During this era, agriculture was a means of survival and people lived in rural communities known as villages (Duby 167). In his article, Rural Economy and Country Folk in the Medieval West, Georges Duby recounts the daily lives of those who lived in the Medieval West during this time period. Those who lived in this time did not live an easy life. There existed many struggles within the communities. Many complications arose that were not present in say, the Roman Empire. According to Paul Veyne’s, Pleasures and Excesses in the Roman Empire, the Medieval West palled in comparison. In my own humble opinion, I would choose to live in Veyne’s description of the Roman empire as opposed
During the postclassical period, the expansion of trade had different interpretations around the world. Varying societies all reacted to trade in different ways due to how they viewed the situation. It had caused conflict in few areas around the world and also created peace as well as harm. Some communities had pros and cons to trade, like everything else. Some reasons for the positive or negative feedback on trade was due to religion, and or the philosophical system. Religion and the philosophical system was both pros or cons for trade in different civilizations. Religion helped with the spread of different ideas and religions across a mass area. Yet it had a negative input because then people fought, thinking their religion was more
Many different classes of people existed in the Middle Ages. Each class had a certain and very different way of life than the other. Peasants in the Middle Ages had extremely difficult lives. Domestic life for the peasants during the Middle Ages was endured with many hardships and sacrifices, but in the end they were just everyday citizens doing what they had to in order to survive.
Late Medieval Europe was a very different time from what Europe is today. It was a time where social mobility was unthinkable; people lived in fear of their creator, and were always trying to please their creator. In addition, Medieval Europe was an unhealthy and unhygienic state, where sickness and disease was rampant. It was a place where women had little to no rights, and minority groups were frequently falsely accused of many problems that were out of their control. For example, they were blamed for drought, which usually resulted in their unjust persecution because they “angered” God. Overall, Europe was the last place one would want to live unless you were of the nobility. On the other hand, Europe was also a major trading power, engaging
“Feudalism was a political, economic, and social system in which nobles were granted the use of land that legally belonged to the king” (Doc. 1) "Social" life in the Middle Ages was the only kind of life people knew. Whether nobility, craftsperson or peasant your life was defined by your family, your community and those around you (OI). “The Church protected the Kings and Queens (OI).” “The King is above Nobles, Nobles above Knights, and the Knights are above serfs (Doc.1).” “ Nobles provides money and knights. Knights provide protection and military service (Doc. 1).” Social network, your village and your local nobility, was your family (OI).” “From the moment of its baptism a few days after birth, a child entered into a life of service to God and God’s Church (Doc.3).” “Every Person was required to live by the Church’s laws and to pay heavy taxes to support the Church (Doc.3).” “In return for this, they were shown the way to everlasting life and happiness after lives that were often short and hard (Doc. 3).” In conclusion, this is what it was like in the Middle Ages from a social
During the Elizabethan era many events occurred. One of these events was the Hundred Years War. This war lasted from 1337 until 1453(Lambirth). This was a major part of history for both England and France. The war started in May 1337 when King Philip VI of France attempted to confiscate the English territories in the duchy of Aquitaine (Lambirth). Henry V had to step up to the throne when his father passed. Henry wasn’t sure about this whole situation but he accepted what he had to do and got right to it without hesitating. Social class was also a major role in this time period. Most people were on the lower end of society. They didn’t have much money or food. They were mainly peasants who worked for other people in order to feed their families(Poole). Theatre also played a part in social class. When people attended theater, it was mainly wealthier people who could afford to go but everyone was welcomed inside the Globe. They dressed nice and always had...
It was also common for richer families to marry off their daughters sooner than poorer families. This was because poorer families needed as much help doing work as they could. Women had no choice in deciding who they got married to, and once married they would be controlled by their husband (Trueman, “Medieval Women”).
Geography led to the Han dynasty decline because of how the government kept splitting the land to itty-pieces of property and charged a profuse amount of tax. “To escape their taxes farmers and landowners often gave their property to powerful magnates and became tenants on their estates”. Due to the high amount of tax a lot of money couldn’t be given to the tax collector because of the corrupt government.
Europe’s social structure in the Middle Ages consisted of feudalism. A hierarchical society of Kings granting land to nobles, who would then give a fief to a knight in return for service. The knight would then have peasants or serfs working on their fief. However, as the plague spread, many peasants died and their labour could not be replaced. This loss of workforce had a significant impact upon the economy as grain was not being harvested and livestock roamed free. The agrarian economy had been severely damaged, the land became uncultivated and returned back to its natural state. This rural collapse eventually led to food shortages in towns and cities.
...ord to hire people to do work for them, but it wasn’t like that for other poor families of the Renaissance.
Life for a craftsmen in the Middle Ages was and could be difficult and challenging. Some starting at higher social ranks than others, being treated like less. Facing death, plague, sickness, disease, sadness, famine, poverty, and pain. All a risk craftsmen might go through, or already had. And some, never having a place to call home and rest without having to leave the next day or month. Craftsmen in the Middle Ages had one of the most difficult and dangerous jobs in the time period, maybe even today.
In the Medieval Period, life was either very great or very bad, according to your class. Only 2 classes existed during this time: the nobles, such as kings and knights who lived inside the castle, or the peasants, such as working-class people who lived in often unspeakable conditions. The peasants treated the nobles with the utmost respect, for if they didn’t, then the nobles could have them beheaded. (Sanders, p 34). The nobles were almost always the ones who owned land, and the peasants worked on this land in exchange for a small portion of it, in a sense, rented out in exchange for the labor. Peasants often worked 16-hour days as long as they could see into the nighttime and got very bad nourishment. The noble was not interested in the health of the peasants working on his land, as there was a significant supply of others who were very willing to take his or her place.
Man was lonely during the Middle Ages. Life was very harsh and everyone worked except the king. The usual life expectancy was 35. People lived in small farming communities. Everyone lived in constant fear of being raided by foreign invaders such as the Vikings. When they were not worrying about being invaded they were scared of plague and other living conditions. Man's position in the world was unknown. Knowledge, wealth, and governing body had to be recreated. Cities were far and few between and much less populated and developed like today's cities. The Middle Ages was a religious age. Man clung to God as creator. People painstakingly built churches. Religion was what was the most important to people for a long time, and to be excommunicated was horrible.
Along these lines the grave harvest is a decent contender for slave work since subjugation makes tight control of the work power neither unreasonable nor too hard. Planters more than likely felt as if they had to conduct free labor in order to turn enough profit to maintain or gain wealth. Capitalism is one process by which the problems of economic production and resource distribution might be resolved. Instead of planning economic decisions forcefully, as with socialism or feudalism, economic planning under capitalism occurs with decentralization and voluntary decisions. The whole point of capitalism is to take advantage of the circumstance and slavery did just that for farmers in this day in age. Africans would just work, work, work, without pay, pay, pay which made the farmers’ profits go up, up, up and this exactly what the farmers wanted. In order for the plant production to expand, planters just starting giving out needed loans to buy slaves and land. A resulting organization of this would be the joint-stock company, in which investors can contribute variable sums of money to fund the venture. In doing so they become joint holders of the trading stock of the company, with a right to share in any profits in proportion to the size of their holding. Once the idea of capitalism appeared, it quickly spread. England's unique economic position both assisted and was assisted by the development of the colonies. The capitalist transformation of agriculture helped to create a landless proletariat which was available for immigration or for wage labour in England. The profits of slavery were central to the primitive accumulation which paved the way for English industrialisation. The change of the English economy made a
