Toyota Corolla History
The Corolla is the first car Toyota manufactured in America, and 30 million Corollas have been sold in various countries. It is the most popular car ever produced by Toyota. The first Toyota was manufactured in Japan in 1966. The vehicle was introduced to the United States in 1968. Toyota worked hard to overcome the perception that Japanese vehicles were shoddy. The first Corolla sold for less than $2,000. The company proved they could make an inexpensive car without sacrificing quality.
Appearance Over Time
First generation Toyota Corolla's had a very basic design. The rear axle was mounted on a pair of leaf springs, and the vehicle had strut front. The second generation Corolla had the leaf spring rear suspension and front strut. The 1970 model was significantly more comfortable than the 1969 model. In 1970, the Corolla was the second most popular car in the world. The grille was redesigned in 1972. The aesthetic did not have any more major changes until 1975.

A three-door hatchback was introduced in 1976. The hatchback was supposed to be a sporty two-door station wagon. The Corolla Sport Coupe was introduced in 1976.
