Dobrica Zivadin Jovicic titles the article that I chose to read and discuss “Key Issues in the Conceptualization of Tourism destinations”. I found this article from the affiliation called “Tourism Geographies” journal from Taylor and Francis online journal. It is volume 18, issue four, and was published on January 10th, 2016. This article explores the term “destination” and how the traditional use of the term does not match with the current use of the term because the geographic concept of destination is typically one-sided. This article accurately represents and explains how the world “destination” can be used differently and has more than one meaning. I chose this article because I thought that it is very well written and explains the …show more content…

“After analyzing the various approaches and concepts of tourism destinations and highlighting contributions and shortcomings of each of them individually, Pearce, D.G. (2014) toward an integrative conceptual framework of destinations. Journal of Travel Research, 53(2), 141–153.) presented what he called the integrative conceptual framework of tourism destinations, with an aim to conceptualize more precisely and more comprehensively the phenomenon of tourism destinations. The article discusses the five key approaches of destinations, which I relate back to the types of tourism development discussed in chapter four of our textbook. There are three types of tourism development and they include tourist enclaves, resorts, and tourism zones (Williams, Stephen, and Alan Lew, pg. 87-88). The topic of this article and these types of tourism development relate to each other because these forms of tourism development are “destinations” in themselves. The textbook defines a resort as “a specific property that offers a combination of accommodations and leisure and recreation services, and a destination that collectively offers these” (Williams, Stephen, and Alan Lew, pg. 87-88). I relate this definition back to the first key approach discussed in the article, which is explaining how the basic needs of a destination are having a destination, transportation, and activities within the destination ((Howie, F. (2003). Managing the tourist destination. London: Cengage Learning EMEA)” (Jovicic, Dobrica Z). This is the first step in making a certain place a destinations that tourists will want to
