Touch is one of our five main senses and important sense to be able to perceive reality. The way we as individuals touch things gives us a sense of connection whether it the thing we are touching is a hand of a friend or the prickly spines of a cactus. In the video Touch. it explores the different natures of touch in different movie clips the video provides. This video would attract viewers who are interested in the emotional atmosphere in films or for those who want to understand a deeper meaning of the term touch. Touch. communicates to the audience how touch can be perceived as a positive emotion, negative emotion or neutral emotion through the reactions of the actors and actresses in the movies. This provided the audience a technical term before showing movies. The first clip came from the movie (500) Days of Summer of two people’s hands touching each other. In this clip, characters Summer and Tom were talking about their feelings. Summer told Tom that she did not want a serious relationship. Summer ends up marrying some other guy. Those who have not seen this movie and only saw this clip would assume that they are holding hands like a couple. However, in this context, Summer was holding Tom’s hand for a short amount of time before she left and went away. This shows that the holding of hands between Summer and Tom was bittersweet because of the potential of Summer and Tom being a couple only have that possibility fade away. As a result, the feelings from both Summer and Tom holding hands is a neutral emotion since it is a bittersweet feeling. One clip from Touch. was taken out of the movie Good Will Hunting. The scene features Will hugs Sean while crying. Backstory to this scene: Will is a was talking to is psychiatrist about how he did not have any problems to his psychiatrist Sean. Will keeps assuring Sean that he is perfectly fine. However, Sean was reading into his backstory; Will was abused as a child. Sean kept reminding Will that whatever happened in the past, it was not his fault. Sean continued to do this to the point where Will could not take anymore and began to cry. The expressions given off from Will showed that he was still in pain from being reminded of his past but, the hug he received from Sean relinquished the pain from the past. Hugs are strong symbols of touch as they represent a sense of comfort. In this clip, Sean was comforting Will as he surrenders his emotions. The movie Dope, written and directed by Rick Famuyiwa, follows the story of Malcolm through his senior year of high school in the Inglewood California. He lives in a poor neighborhood, with only his mom, yet he still strives for greatness. He has a couple of friends, and they all love 90’s hip hop culture. They try to do their best to stay out of trouble and away from bullies. Malcolm sees a girl he likes and ends up following her to a drug dealer’s birthday party. When the cops bust the birthday party, he unknowingly goes home with all the drugs and the gun that the drug dealer owns. This sets off a wild chain reaction, as he now has to sell these drugs to payoff the supplier, who happens to be the Harvard Alumni that Malcolm’s needs approval
Communication is everywhere. We, as interactive human beings, spend the majority of our time corresponding with others to satisfy our physical, identity, social, and practical needs (Adler, Rodman, & Sevigny, 2011). Often, this is consciously done; we search our minds for the accurate linguistic means to express our experiences, and use them to communicate with those around us. However, communication is not as straightforward and effortless as we may believe. It is, in fact, often unintentional, with 65% of it occurring as a result of non-verbal cues (Matsumoto, Shibata, Seiji, Mori, & Shioe, 2010). As mentioned by Marta Dynel (2011) in a study done on nonverbal communication, “Non verbal signs and signals ... are prevalent practically in all social encounters, which entail at least two individuals, who need not even talk or consciously interact otherwise”. Examples exist in all mediums, including in the animated film ‘Up’, where one scene depicts transactional communication between a male and female character, all expressed nonverbally . The nonverbal communication in this scene, along with various other communication constructs, will be discussed.
In the documentary “Fed Up,” sugar is responsible for Americas rising obesity rate, which is happening even with the great stress that is set on exercise and portion control for those who are overweight. Fed Up is a film directed by Stephanie Soechtig, with Executive Producers Katie Couric and Laurie David. The filmmaker’s intent is mainly to inform people of the dangers of too much sugar, but it also talks about the fat’s in our diets and the food corporation shadiness. The filmmaker wants to educate the country on the effects of a poor diet and to open eyes to the obesity catastrophe in the United States. The main debate used is that sugar is the direct matter of obesity. Overall, I don’t believe the filmmaker’s debate was successful.

Spike Jonze’s film Her reveals the increasing complexity of intimate relationships concordant with the ever-growing presence of technology in our lives. In the frequent—almost excessive—moments of bright, lively red, we see the hope, desire, or even existence of intimacy. However, the few juxtaposed moments lacking red create a serious, threatening distinction between life with and without this sense of closeness and affinity. Through the powerful, effective use of mise-en-scène elements, tone, and off-screen space, the viewer gains insight into a possible future without intimacy as Sam and Theo’s relationship evolves and eventually corrodes.

The presence of nonverbal messages in our communication is very important. Following the text, researchers have estimated it is up to “65 percent of social meaning we convey in face-to-face interactions is a result of nonverbal behavior” (131). The movie “Mrs. Doubtfire” is a typical example about the interactions among characters, also with audience. Several scenes in this movie show us the effects of nonverbal messages in communication, especially through the character Daniel, who disguises himself as a middle-aged British nanny in order to be near his children.

In Will’s therapy sessions, Sean conveyed his empathy for Will. According to Myers, “Empathy is the Vicarious experience of another’s feelings; putting oneself in another’s shoes” (Myer, 2002, p.473). Since Sean demonstrated the ability to recognize Will 's indignity and fear, it helped subdue Will 's anxiety and promoted Will’s realistic connection with himself and others. In the Movie, Will recognizes the commonality with Sean allowing him to acknowledge the nurturing relationship that Sean offers. It appears that Sean was the surrogate caregiver that Will never had, satisfying the gaps of Will 's development. Sean 's experiences provided Will with a sense of belonging as Will was provided with insight as to how life should be in an unbroken/normal home. Since Will was never exposed to recognize real intimacy between a man and woman, Sean often shared his loved and experiences from his marriage. This allowed Will to reflect on the closeness of Sean’s marriage and the splendor found in trusting and loving others with all their
Nonverbal communication contributed a large part in creating relational uncertainty within Tom and Summer’s relationship. There were multiple occasions within the film when Summer’s behavior may have led Tom to believe that she wanted more than the platonic relationship she established. For example, Summer kissed Tom in the copy room of the greeting card company after she discovered that he had feelings for her at a workplace karaoke night. “A kiss…can mean anything from a polite but superficial greeting to the most intense arousal” (205) states the communications textbook, Looking Out Looking In. In other words, a kiss is very dependent on contextual factors in order to gauge its significance. The movie, The Mission (1986), depicts events in South America, likely in what is now the state of Rio Grande do Sul. In the movie, a slave trader named Rodrigo Mendoza, played by Robert De Niro, makes his living by capturing slaves and bringing them to the Spanish Governor’s plantation. There, he catches his fiancée sleeping with his younger half-brother, which causes him, in a rage, to kill his younger brother. Due to this, he eventually joins a Jesuit mission. After coming into contact with a group of natives, and being accepted by them, he formally takes the vows to become a Jesuit priest. When the land their mission is on switches hands from the Spanish to the Portuguese, however, the safety of their mission is put into question, due the Portuguese affinity for native slaves, as well as Pombal’s dislike of the Jesuits. Seeing that the Portuguese would take over the mission, Mendoza forsakes his vows, and prepares the natives for what would become the fight of their lives. The Portuguese, however, soon overwhelm the priests and the natives, killing Mendoza, as well as the other priests in the mission, notably Father Gabriel (Jeremy Irons) and Father Fielding (Liam Neeson), who had been instrumental in Mendoza’s path to the priesthood. Some of the natives escape, and move further inward toward the center of South America.

As an audience we are manipulated from the moment a film begins. In this essay I wish to explore how The Conversation’s use of sound design has directly controlled our perceptions and emotional responses as well as how it can change the meaning of the image. I would also like to discover how the soundtrack guides the audience’s attention with the use of diegetic and nondiegetic sounds.
A.I.: Artificial Intelligence is a Steven Spielberg science fiction drama film, which conveys the story of a younger generation robot, David, who yearns for his human mother’s love. David’s character stimulates the mind-body question. What is the connection between our “minds” and our bodies?
Movies take us inside the skin of people quite different from ourselves and to places different from our routine surroundings. As humans, we always seek enlargement of our being and wanted to be more than ourselves. Each one of us, by nature, sees the world with a perspective and selectivity different from others. But, we want to see the world through other’s eyes; imagine with other’s imaginations; feel with other’s hearts, at a same time as with our own. Movies offer us a window onto the wider world, broadening our perspective and opening our eyes to new wonders.
