Today’s technology is advancing at a tremendous speed, yet some inventions still remain unchanged and inspiring. Even though there are many inventions existed that benefit our life, only certain inventions could be still alive because of their benefits brought to the people. In “Don’t Change a Thing” by Therese Oneill, Oneill introduces us the six eternal invention that still exist today. Also, Jessica Guynn’s article, “Douglas Engelbart Dies at Age 88”, explains how the passion and inspiration of Engelbart brought to the field of computer create today’s revolutionary computer. Despite the fact that many inventions exist, many people abandon them or eventually change them completely. However, some inventions succeed in preserving and become timeless because of their usefulness and inventor’s passion and inspiration built in the invention.
Firstly, usefulness is really one of the most important criteria that determines the value and lifetime of an invention. Without any benefit that helps people, an invention will be soon forgotten because the purpose of an invention is to bring changes and positive effect to our world and human community. Therefore, usefulness plays as major part that contributes to a successful invention. For example, the rocking chair is a effective invention that brings advantage to people. With the thoughtful idea, it provides a function that “automatically adjust[s] their center of balance to whoever sits in them, bringing each sitter a uniquely comfortable position” (pg.4). With this helpful benefit, it improves lives of some people because it relives “people from suffering maladies” (pg.4). From this example, we can clearly see the positive effective of a successful invention can bring to us. Moreover, th...

...entioned before, usefulness. With flyswatter we could prevent the spreading of disease from fly or mosquito. These small insects are vectors that spread disease rapidly therefore the invention of flyswatter helps us to solve the problem. Finally, usefulness is important to an successful invention.
In conclusion, the top two criteria for a successful invention are usefulness and the passion of inventor contributed to the invention. Most remaining invention still exist is because of their benefit brought to people. Rocking chairs, teapot and flyswatter they all are beneficial at different ways despite their different functions. Still, without inventor’s passion and effort built in the invention, it will not succeed. Although there might be some other criteria make an invention successful, only the passion of inventor and passion contribute a big part of its success.
Over the course of human history, we as a species have progressed an unimaginably large amount. The source of this progression? Innovation. Without innovation, there is no progression. This then begs another question: why do we innovate? The answer to this is simply that we have issues that we must overcome. We have to innovate to solve our problems, but then those leads to more problems, and therefore more innovation. Although this is a large scale example, the spirit of invention is also important in everyday life as we face our own smaller-scale problems. Without invention, how can we expect to get anywhere? How can we ever accomplish anything, or resolve anything? Without invention, we wouldn’t have electricity, automobiles, or television. We also wouldn’t have success, joy, or relationships, as there are problems that we must solve to
Now you’re in a pickle! What do you do your invention is destroyed? There are some invention that were purposefully designed are failures, and other inventions became successful on accident. Inventors will try to invent something they are thinking about, but when they do it becomes a failure. There are inventors that do not know what they want to invent, but when they invent something they do not know what it is used for but it will become a success. What can an inventors do to ensure success?
Many inventors have left their mark on society. One inventor, in particular, is commonly found at the top of the list of the greatest inventors in world history. He has influenced and impacted many facets of our lives. His inventions laid the foundation of many industries and products which still exist today.
The situations of technological flaws he chose as his examples added integrity to his arguments as well as proved his thesis. The author was skilled at explaining these examples profusely, thus further educating the readers and making them aware of how innovation can turn horribly wrong. One of Suzuki’s significant examples was the use of the DDT insecticide. The sole purpose of this chemical compound’s use was to kill malaria-carrying mosquitoes in hope of saving lives of those living in tropical climate countries. Although DDT did assist many, its use created more harm and damage than good. Evidently, that was not the goal of this insecticide; it was created to be helpful and to provide in a difficult circumstance. However, its side effects unmistakably cancel out any beneficial aspects it might have had. This example clearly illustrates the negative impacts technology has had on humanity. Another example Suzuki decided to put forth is the use of the oral contraceptive. Many overlook issues technology creates; they are too preoccupied with the benefits, it is all anyone can see! The oral contraceptive has undoubtedly helped countless women worldwide. However, as the author states in his essay, “ It was only after millions of healthy, normal women had taken the pill for years that epidemiologists could see negative effects. No amount of pretesting could have

For something to be instrumentally valuable, it “accrues to something in virtue of some further valuable purpose that it serves”. The concept of instrumental value is one which is present in a wide variety of things, such as: logic, for teaching one how to formulate a valid argument; the knowledge of how to read a map, allowing one to find where they are going; a pen, enabling one to write. In each of these examples, the value shown explicitly comes from what the subject, knowledge or object allows one to achieve. Even so, this is not the only source of value. Value
...where we are now. Yet, there were many great inventions from many great inventors, gutenburg’s invention changed the whole word. Without the support of the nation it wouldn’t even be here today. The ability to be able to have a machine with moveable metal typing that long is amazing. There has been a great deal of accomplishments but this is still around today but just more advanced. It provided numerous future opportunities for the future. The publics freedom of speech we have today, our relgion as it grows each day, and the education that the printing press led us to be at. Gutenberg gave us this creation so that today we are where we need to be. With out opportunities where would we be? Life is full of opporutnies and that is exactly what johann gutenburg gave us.
According to the article “is scientific progress inevitable?” can understand that advances in technology are in the order of nature and advances in technology are regular. This article may be expanded many ideas about the progress and development of technology. Technology must be progress, but the progress of scientific discovery may not be able to promote social development in a short time. ...ke to make life just a little easier. Either way, we would not be where we are without Inventors.
Technology is important in our world today. Terry Tempest William’s “The Clan of One-breasted Women” is about women having breast cancer because of bomb testing from 1952- 1961 in Utah. In this case technology has a negative effect on the human race. On the other hand, “The Technology of Medicine” by Lewis Thomas is about money and the technology of medicine. There are three different levels of technology in medicine according to Thomas and they are “nontechnology,” “halfway technology” (582), and “technology of modern medicine” (583). It is obvious that technology benefits humankind with cures for diseases and prevention of sickness. Without technology, medicine would not be as advanced and there would not be as many medical procedures as there are today. By using technology, doctors have found out how to prevent certain diseases or viruses by immunizations. In fact, the human race needs to have technology to advance the medical field, as disclosed in Richard Selzer’s “Sarcophagus” about surgery, from the doctor’s point of view, showing all of the technology he uses during procedure. All these essays have examples on how technology benefits human kind. Therefore, technology is a friend of humankind, when used with restrictions, because it has made improvements in medicine and has proved its usefulness in hospitals.
Today there are many technological advancement to enhance our daily activities, whether it be as simple as an Ipod for entertainment purposes or as vital as an artificial heart for the survival of a human live, science and technology is the reason for its existence.
