An individual’s top five strengths are characteristics that generate the most intense instinctual response. I believe that the five strengths that i received correspond and resonate strongly with my character. Those themes that received my strongest instinctual responses are: communication, positivity, woo, includer, and harmony strengths after completion of the Strengthsfinder assessment. The five themes can be seen as rather similar, and they are, but individually the unique differences are definitively seen in my character, and as a whole have an even greater response than when seen just individually. I tend to agree with this assessment as it brings out my best qualities as strengths in the right way and enables me to assess myself to realize my potential. The strength that can best describe me is the balance which also means consistency. This has helped me cultivate my reputation and has helped me balance my choices. “The Big Five Trait Theory” is based on the five broad dimensions of one’s personality which according to Jason Rentfrow (PH. D) was “uncovered” after “decades of research on personality.”
Through the self-assessment instruments utilized in this program, I have gained wealth of knowledge about my strengths, and weaknesses and how they affect my personal and professional life. By using different exercises, I recognized new strengths and weaknesses. At the same time, I identified ways to develop my strengths and overcome my weaknesses. The Kolb Learning Style Inventory (LSI) identified some of my strengths as the ability to get things done, initiating, and taking risks (Kolb, 2007). In the Strongest Self Feedback Exercise, some of the feedback listed my strengths as having excellent interpersonal and communication skills, being self-confident, a fast learner, determined, hardworking, and an awesome listener (Drucker, 2005).
As I stated earlier, loyalty is one of my top values, and I believe that if I am a loyal leader many people will trust me and develop their leadership attributes. Along with loyalty comes relationships. To me, the two go hand in hand. It is nearly impossible to have a healthy relationship when someone is not being loyal. I believe my greatest opportunity to be loyal and successful is to utilize my leadership ability to fulfill my potential. I plan to use the strengths I discovered from StrengthsFinder 2.0 to navigate my values down whichever path I decide to choose for the remainder of my college career, and any post-graduation occupation. I believe that my top strength, harmony, will continue to affect the way I make relationships. Harmony has been an extremely large part of my life and I intend to rely on it throughout my life. I know that my second strength, adaptability, will give me the tools to encounter anything that life throws at me. I understand that things are not always going to go the way you intend. Having the ability to adjust my thought processes is just one way adaptability will make a difference in my life. I believe that my third strength, WOO, will help me to build relationships and expand my network no matter how old I am. Being able to relate and connect with others is something I strive to do in my daily life. My fourth strength, communication, goes hand in hand with WOO.
My top five strengths from StrengthsQuest are connectedness, developer, consistency, relater, and restorative. At first glance, I thought I had answered the questions wrong. This list did not seem to be my strengths. After reading the descriptions of each strength, I realized that all of these strengths reoccur throughout my life.
The areas where I am the stronger would be the empathy scale, which assesses the degree to which I identify feelings for others. I couldn’t agree more with that score because I enjoy the opportunity to meet others and identify their most important attributes. I take feelings into consideration when making choices. I feel the need to make every person feel as though they are welcomed and important in my life. Another strength of mine would be the intellectual interaction, which assesses my degree of seeking out knowledge of other cultural orientations. I really enjoy learning about more cultures and the way they live their lives. I feel it is important to learn more about what others do, so I can grow in my own culture.
I chose to take the VIA character strengths survey from www.viacharacter.org. My top three strengths were humor, kindness, and perspective. The definition for the character strength of humor is liking to laugh or smile and making other people do the same. It also means to have a cheerful view on life to see its lighter side and maintain a good mood. This character strength falls under the category of transcendence. Transcendence describes strengths that provide a sense of connection to something higher in meaning and purpose than ourselves. The character strength of kindness is defined as being generous and doing favors and good deeds for others. This character strength is categorized under the virtue category of humanity. Character strengths that fall under this category are manifested in caring relationships with others and are mainly displayed in one-on-one relationships. The character strength of perspective is defined as being able to provide wise council to others due to the ability to look at the world in a way that makes sense to yourself and others. This strength falls under the virtue category of wisdom, which deals with strengths involving the way we gain
Other strengths include being self-confident, conscientious, diligent and determined. It was interesting to see my lower scores as well; the lowest average score was sensitivity (3.2), followed closely by self-assuredness and perception and empathy. Although I consider myself sensitive, I believe the sense of sensitivity does not apply as often towards others I interact with. For example, I often speak my mind and voice my opinion with little thought of the consequence or impact it might have on those around me. Thus, sensitivity is not one of my existing strengths, but rather an opportunity for growth. I also found it interesting to note how I scored significantly lower in the human skill, and higher in technical, which I did not expect. This score likely correlates with my score form the LTQ, which identified room for improvement in relating with
I believe that life is a learning experience and being able to recognize our own strengths and weaknesses can help us become better individuals in anything we choose to do, whether it is positive abilities and skills that can help achieve our goals or negative personal areas that need improvement. Knowing yourself and what you can do, can help you recognize and overcome your weaknesses.
