The purpose of this experiment was to test which brand of whitening toothpaste is the most effective. The original hypothesis was that Crest 3D White Advanced Toothpaste be the most effective, while Arm & Hammer Advanced Whitening Toothpaste will be the least successful in whitening the tiles. The hypothesis also stated that the Sensodyne and Colgate brands will be equally as effective, while being more sufficient than Arm & Hammer, but less than Crest. The hypothesis was partially supported as Arm & Hammer was the least effective and Crest was the most. However, Sensodyne was more sufficient than Colgate. This was clearly displayed on the graphs On the whitening effectiveness scale, the average score for Crest was 3.5/5, Sensodyne was 3/5, Colgate was 2/5 and Arm and Hammer was only 1.5/5. The results showed that Crest and Sensodyne were more effective than Colgate and Arm & Hammer. As shown on the graphs, the tiles become increasingly whiter after every brushing. Crest increases by about 0.5 every day of brushing. This reveals the whitening toothpaste’s slow …show more content…
The experiment consisted of manually brushing tiles for two minutes. However, brushing for exactly two minutes every time is unfeasible, even with the use of a timer. The time of washing after the tile was brushed was not a control and varied. Another potential disruption to the data could include the amount of force used on each tile. For each trial, Crest was brushed first which may potentially mean more force went into brushing that tile, causing it to be the whitest. An additional factor that may have affected the results is the amount of toothpaste. The amount of toothpaste used to brush each tile was most likely different every time which may have contributed to the results. More trials could have been useful for this project as five trials probably was not enough to ensure accurate
My college plans include attending a two-year college and then pursing a degree in dental hygiene. I believe that I will have a great opportunity to give back to my community with my chosen career. As a dental hygienist, there would be many ways to help young and old alike. The time that I would volunteer would enable me to become more involved in the life of our community.
Dentistry as a profession over the years has evolved rapidly in light of new scientific evidence. Rapidly evolving science and technology have implemented changes within dentistry as evidenced by new standards and guidelines being produced by nationally recognised associations including National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), Faculty of General Dental Practice (FGDP) and Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) in Scotland, in provision of new scientific evidence. The latest standards and guidelines produced, endorse everyday clinical practice through evidence based dentistry (REF). All dental professionals as part of continued professional development are expected to keep to date on relevant guidelines and knowledge related to their practice (REF). This is supported by the General Dental Council who state all clinicians must maintain their professional knowledge and competence throughout their working career (REF).

Imagine having to spend half your fortune on correcting your teeth.”Tooth decay was a perennial national problem that meant a mouthful of silver for patients, and for dentists a pocketful of gold.” (Wallis, 17) If patients don’t take care of their teeth, many issues can start to appear later in their life. Some patients are not knowledgeable of the correct procedures toward keeping a healthy smile. In order to keep a healthy smile patients must be better informed about the knowledge to achieve that success and also maintain.
Healthcare is a necessity to sustain society. Dentistry is an area of healthcare that I feel extremely passionate about because access to proper dental care is limited, especially in the underserved communities. As an African American, I want to become a dentist and healthcare provider in the hopes of helping patients and adding to the diversification of the field. With a growing minority population in the United States, it has become apparent that there is a shortage of black dentists. This is problematic because underrepresented minorities are in great need of access to culturally connected dentists who understand their clinical needs as much as their lives and their challenges. I believe that when the profession includes a range of ethnicities
Listerine created a market for mouthwash in the 1920’s when they marketed it as a solution to chronic halitosis. However, in 1983, a new feature was added in which Listerine also fights plaque making it more desirable for consumers concerned with dental hygiene. Today, it continues to fight bad breath, and plaque having 70% of the total market share. According to Johnson & Johnson’s 2012 Annual Report one of the positive contributors to operational results was international sales of Listerine oral care products.

Brushing your teeth twice a day only cleans twenty-five percent of the mouth at a time. It is for this reason why dentist recommend a healthy fluoride solution to be included into your daily brushing routine; this mouthwash solution will help flush away any food remnants and harmful bacteria from the hard to reach crevasses in the mouth. If this step is skipped it can lead to the formation of dental caries and gum disease, which can lead to worse things if they are not taken care of. To help stress the importance of dental hygiene, Listerine, which is a mouth wash company, released an advertisement for their cool mint flavored antiseptic mouthwash in the hopes of getting non-mouthwash users to jump on the Listerine mouthwash band wagon to proper

Introduction: In Canada, general dental health is not part Canada’s national system of health insurance (Medicare) (1) except for some dental surgical procedures that are performed at hospitals. Since Oral health does not come under the Health Act about ninety-five percent of the oral health care services are offered on a fee-for-service basis. Oral health care is under provincial or territorial jurisdiction like other health care services and publically financed dental care programs provide the remaining five percent of oral health care services (2). Thus, majority of Canadians receive oral health via privately owned dental clinics. Privately owned dental care gives these services providers control over dental service charges, types of available treatment for the patients and number of follow-up appointment for treatments or routine care. Service users pay for the dental expenses from their own pockets or utilize insurance coverage (1).
While whitening is becoming increasingly popular, the American Dental Association does not fully support teeth whitening. No over the counter product has received the American Dental Association’s seal of acceptance (Komaroff). The Association also stated that there are some toxicological effects that have been linked to cancer. While these claims haven’t been fully proven by research, there is unquestionable evidence to support this theory (Konig). This is a grey area of whitening, and it n...
Dental hygiene is a dynamic and challenging career that offers team work, personal growth, and extraordinary benefits, and it is the perfect career for me. As a health care professional, the dental hygienist is an important member of the dental team providing patient care. Good qualities for a dental hygienist are compassion and enjoying talking to people which are two qualities that fit my personality. I love the thought of knowing I made a positive impact in a person's health. Becoming a dental hygienist professionally requires you to obtain an associate degree in dental hygiene. They affect the average American by educating them about dental care. A dentist helps people with their dental health, which can greatly impact a person’s day-to-day life.
