Have you ever seen what stress can do to a kid? It can turn the nicest kid into an aggressive and hateful person. As told stress has a huge effect on people these days, comes in many forms and levels. The very first form of stress is, “Acute stress is the most common form of stress. It comes from demands and pressures of the recent past and anticipated demands and pressures of the near future.”() The second type of stress is episodic stress which is frequent acute stress and is caused (). Then there finally is chronic stress that can wreck the person physically and mentally (). It is caused by people who were in a miserable situation and can’t find a way out of it. All these stresses can take their tolls on people but children in general take it the worst, because they are not mentally equipped to handle it yet. Have you ever wonder why kids can seem so stressed on days. Well it’s because,” the pressure to excel, couple with the turmoil of puberty and exposure to negative influences via internet and their peers is surely a potent recipe for a mental meltdown”(ling) and overall you have to wonder even more, what effect does this have on kids? There are many long term and short term effects that can be give in to kids under stress.
So, we all have to wonder what causes kids to have this stress. A child’s stress can come from school. So, it begs the question what would happen if these kids in our real life become to stressed. We already seen it and just let it happen like with all the suicides and the columbine Massacre. We see the horrors of children who become over stressed all the time but try not to look at it, because we don’t want to see it. So just imagine its your child who is being over stressed, would you want anything to happen to them?

Imagine yourself in the shoes of a twelve year old boy who vigorously fought through blood and death, seeking for survival and hope during a Civil War in Sierra Leone. The novel, A Long Way Gone, tells the story of, Ishmael Beah, a young boy who experienced the mental and physical battle of reluctantly becoming a soldier. Today, majority of us can relate to Ishmael’s unfortunate circumstances through his life because it is something that we have all been affected by individually in areas all across the world. “A Long Way Gone” is a novel written in first person point of view about the author, Ishmael Beah’s memoirs as a child soldier. The novel has realistic descriptions of the civil war including the bloody environment, the losses of family and friends, and Beah’s mind. The inclusion of Beah’s thoughts allows you to see Beah’s perspective of the civil war. The novel demonstrates a combination of styles and a great plot with many details, making the story very enjoyable. It displays how much courage, power, and dignity a person needs to get over warfare.

Providing children with a strong support system is crucial so children have an outlet to communicate with and receive advice on healthy coping mechanisms. Examples of a buffering support system could be a parent, relative, social worker, or counselor. Recent research has also found that treatment of toxic stress can occur through teaching relaxation methods such as breathing techniques and guided imagery (Franke, 2014). It may also be beneficial to focus on the caretaker of the child by providing educational opportunities regarding toxic stress and by administering social resources for the parents, such as parenting classes to help with problem solving skills (Franke, 2014). Studies have shown that many college students are not able to handle the stress while in school, which hinders the ability for the brain to act in a normal way (Shahrokh and Hales, 2003). If a person is unable to deal with the stress that one is being faced with, it will have negative consequences in terms of causing several psychological disorders (Canby et al., 2014). Entering post-secondary education is a completely new environment for students, as it can be tough for many to adjust to the new surroundings. There are many factors that cause stress when students enter college, as it can include having the ability to deal with lower marks (Struthers et al., 2000) and having to create a new social life. Once and if a social life is established, it can cause more stress among students because it can lead into peer pressure that results in risky behavior. In particular, peer pressure can cause alcoholism or drug abuse (Seiffge-Krenke, 1990) or it can also cause unprotected sex. Not only does stress revolve around peer-pressure, but it can also be caused by headaches and lack of energy. Everyone deals with stress at some point in his or her life. Most people deal with it daily. As defined in the book called Principles and Labs for Fitness and Wellness, stress is, “The mental, emotional, and physiological response of the body to any situation that is new, threatening, frightening, or exciting” (Hoeger & Hoeger, 2012). This stress is caused by a stressor, which is also known as “a stress-causing event” (Hoeger & Hoeger, 2012). Stressors can take all different forms, from moving to a new town, having a baby, or even writing a paper (Boyd, Wood, & Wood, 2011). One major stressor in life can be going to college. If not coped with properly, these stressors can leave a person with too much stress that could end up harming them mentally and physically, such as developing an illness (Boyd, Wood, & Wood, 2011). There are several ways to cope with stress. Some healthy ways to cope with stress would be practicing emotion-focused coping, building time-management techniques, and practicing meditation.

Academic stress is very common in student’s lives. Many students assume that making the academic experience their first priority now, will increase the chance of success in the future. School is an important aspect in most teenagers lives and by being so important a teenager can become depressed very effortlessly at school or because of school. Academic stress can take complete control over a student’s life, sometimes leading to depression. At school this may lead to poor attendance, a significant drop in grades or even annoyance with schoolwork, in a good student. There are many studies that have been performed to prove the correlation between responsibility in school and academic performance being the cause to academic stress.
