Tone is the way the author portrays an attitude in their work. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is set in England during the early 1800s. The main character, Elizabeth Bennet sets a sarcastic and taunting tone in the novel. The sarcastic tone is depicted through Elizabeth’s attitude towards Mr. Darcy, marriage, and Mr. Bennet’s attitude. In Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennet is very caustic towards Mr. Darcy. When Mr. Darcy is telling Elizabeth what he believes to be an agreeable woman, Elizabeth says, “I am no longer surprised at your knowing only six accomplished women. Bennet is a very cynical and sardonic character. He always has something sarcastic to say. After Elizabeth had refused Mr. Collins proposal, Mr. Bennet said. “An unhappy alternative is before you, Elizabeth. From this day you must be a stranger to one of your parents—Your mother will never see you again if you do not marry Mr. Collins, and I will never see you again if you do.” (Austen, 105). Mr. Bennet is being sarcastic by mocking the ridiculous way Mrs. Bennet was acting. Another example of when Mr. Bennet was being sarcastic was after Mr. Bingley and Jane had be separated. Mr. Bennet said to Elizabeth, “Your sister is crossed in love, I find. I congratulate her. Next to being married, a girl likes to be crossed a little in love now and then.” (Austen, 129). This is sarcastic because Mr. Bennet is making fun of the fact that the guy Jane planned to marry had left her. He is also saying that girls like drama in their love lives so they have something to talk about. In conclusion, the sarcastic tone of pride and prejudice is carried about by Elizabeth to Mr. Darcy, Austen’s portrayal of marriage, and Mr. Bennet’s general demeanor.
