story seem more like a non-fiction story as it makes it less happy-go-merry and adds some fault in what could be a perfect story since it is made up. Other tones, however, are used for different purposes in the story to give it character. The author also uses the romantic tone in the story several times, very efficiently. This tone is executed between Adam and Mia mostly during flashbacks she recalls between the two of them. The first time this tone takes place is when Mia dresses differently to one of Adam’s concerts to see if his feelings for her would change. He says, “But the you who are tonight is the same you I was in love with yesterday, the same you I'll be in love with tomorrow” (Foreman 114). This quote shows Adams love for Mia …show more content…
This tone is executed well as it isn't overdone and doesn't take away front he more melancholy and depressed scenes in the story. The sarcastic tone was used when Mia has a flashback of whens she was talking to her mom about Adam. She said, “Love’s a bitch” (Foreman 236). This quote is used after Mia talks to Adam about Juilliard and must choose one of the two options; it helps to further the plot in showing that Mia is not happy with love without having yet another depressing conversation taking place in the story where Mia cries to her mom. This short quote also helps give Mia characterization. The sarcastic tone is shown yet a second time when Mia is in the ICU at night. She says, “…So quiet that can almost hear other people's dreams” (Foreman 205). This quote shows that Mia is annoyed with the quietness and is restless, without her having a fit. The author uses sarcasm to create a sense of humor within Mia, also showing that she isn't too depressed, there for isn't ready to let go. Another time the sarcastic tone is shown is when Mia’s ghost sees Adam at the hospital for the first time and recalls his scent. She says, “Then I smell the sweat on him, a clean musky scent that I'd bottle and wear as perfume if I could” (Foreman 256). This quote isn't sappy at all, yet shows Mia’s adoration for Adam through the use of sarcasm without getting emotional and can give the reader an idea about their relationship without …show more content…
The primary theme of love prevailing over all hardships was relatable because I have experienced death in my family and have watched people have each other’s backs and express love to one another in order to cope with the hardship. At the same time, not only was it a relatable theme, but the theme was also an eye opener as it taught me love isn’t just intimacy. A lot of times movies and books show love between two characters as being romantic and steamy, however this book proved love to be much more as it made love what healed and helped someone prevail through a time of need. It came in the form of adoration for an object that in turn mended two very opposite people together and kept them together during the time when they felt distanced because they had two different plans for their lives. Another example of this was Mia’s love for the cello helping her get through high school, a time when she couldn't fit in even if she tried. I could also relate to this aspect of the theme because I went to school at Lake Highland, where I couldn't fit in if iI tried because I didn't play a sport, but since I loved dancing so much, I knew that could get me through
When Zora Hurston wrote this novel, she wanted to explain how a young women search for her own identity. This young woman would go through three relationships that took her to the end of the journey of a secure sense of independence. She wanted to find her own voice while in a relationship, but she also witnessed hate, pain, and love through the journey. When Logan Killicks came she witnessed the hate because he never connected physically or emotionally to her. Jody Starks, to what she assumed, as the ticket to freedom. What she did not know was the relationship came with control and pain. When she finally meets Tea Cake she was in love, but had to choose life over love in the end.
If my life had no purpose, no individuality, and no happiness, I would not want to live. This book teaches the importance of self expression and independence. If we did not have these necessities, then life would be like those in this novel. Empty, redundant, and fearful. The quotes above show how different life can be without our basic freedoms. This novel was very interesting and it shows, no matter how dismal a situation is, there is always a way out if you never give up, even if you have to do it alone.
...o the conclusion of the theme. I strongly think that the message the author Sharon Draper was trying to explain to the readers is that even though we all fall that we also must learn to get back up. Amari had given me inspiration because even thought she went through some of the worst problems that any girl her age can experience Amari with the help of everyone around her was able to use her backbone to get her back up and lift her head up high to accept what future awaited her. The people around her helped shape who she will be one day and I can relate this to my life in which I choose to follow or not follow the ideas of society to help shape my future life into a better one than it is right now. And I have also learned that even through the toughest times to always remember that I am not alone, that I have my experiences and hopes to guide me through the journey.
Beloved is a novel which digs deeply into the lives of four, post-Civil War, African American people. The novel has many things which could be deemed unacceptable but it is necessary to read as high school students in order to expand our views on life as we know it. The novel may have some idiosyncratic issues but they are unfortunately things that occur in our modern day world.
The book is sectioned into three sections. The three sections were the stories of three kids, who were going through the same tragedy but in there view. I liked the way she did this because not only gave you a detailed look through one child, but you go to experience the knowledge of three different children and what they thought. It makes it possible for more people to be able to relate to this book.
The theme of the story was love and courage. It showed how much Sir Percy cared about and loved Marguerite. Marguerite once loved him, but now took him for granted and thought of him as a fop. It also limned how brave Sir Percy, The Scarlet Pimpernel, was in risking his life for the lives of the aristocrats. The Scarlet Pimpernel and a small band of devoted followers had dedicated their lives and fortunes to saving the innocent aristocrats of the French Revolution and the horror of the guillotine. They risked their lives on numerous occasions and rescued many French noblesse bringing them to the safety and security of England.
Toni Morrison's novel, Beloved, reveals the effects of human emotion and its power to cast an individual into a struggle against him or herself. In the beginning of the novel, the reader sees the main character, Sethe, as a woman who is resigned to her desolate life and isolates herself from all those around her. Yet, she was once a woman full of feeling: she had loved her husband Halle, loved her four young children, and loved the days of the Clearing. And thus, Sethe was jaded when she began her life at 124 Bluestone Road-- she had loved too much. After failing to 'save' her children from the schoolteacher, Sethe suffered forever with guilt and regret. Guilt for having killed her "crawling already?" baby daughter, and then regret for not having succeeded in her task. It later becomes apparent that Sethe's tragic past, her chokecherry tree, was the reason why she lived a life of isolation. Beloved, who shares with Seths that one fatal moment, reacts to it in a completely different way; because of her obsessive and vengeful love, she haunts Sethe's house and fights the forces of death, only to come back in an attempt to take her mother's life. Through her usage of symbolism, Morrison exposes the internal conflicts that encumber her characters. By contrasting those individuals, she shows tragedy in the human condition. Both Sethe and Beloved suffer the devastating emotional effects of that one fateful event: while the guilty mother who lived refuses to passionately love again, the daughter who was betrayed fights heaven and hell- in the name of love- just to live again.
It has a strong tone as well. The tone changes as the dialog begins, he starts explaining how no one understand him and the things he think is important are different than them. He says that neither of them shared his “indignation at the scandalous theft of the old miller's songs.” This selection of detail helps back up the fact that he is misunderstood. He also pointed out that neither of them seemed to care that their friend Four-Eyes was leaving the mountain or “the prospect of of losing Balzac.” All these examples of selection of detail exemplify that he doesn't share the same interests or thoughts as everyone else. He did describe though that they finally paid attention to him when he told them about pretending to be Luo. After this, the tone sort of changes. The narrator is watching the little seamstress and is mesmerized by every move she makes. Her laugh made him want to “marry her there and then.” The selection of detail shows how in love with her he is, despite the fact that she is Luo’s girlfriend. Since she's Luo’s girlfriend, he stays loyal to his best friend and does not act upon his crush. Suddenly, the tone turns around and the seamstress says “about those books of his--what if we stole them?” This is completely out of the blue, and isn't something the seamstress would normally say. This selection of detail turns the passage around and introduces a new topic of conversation as well as brings upon a new side of the Seamstress. Overall, this experience he went through brought out his true feelings and revealed his character through examples of diction, tone, and selection of
Theme is developed throughout the text, by going through all of the things that caused her struggles, and introducing her as a person who seems strong enough to persist and make the most of her situations. Things such as being a mother of two young children, being involved in a disastrous marriage, having very little money to care for her family, and ontop of that being an African American woman in 1903; all of which, she had no control of.
One of the lessons and the themes of the book is that no matter what there will be something unexpected that could happen, but we just have to learn how to adapt to it and survive. Many people in life are faced with challenges, and it's up to them if they choose to go with it or fix it. while the father and the son were on the road they started off as a family but the mother could not take the starvation, and the struggle to survive so she decided to give up. On the road they encountered many people who resorted to becoming cannibals and doing malicious things so that they could live. I learned that people will do whatever it takes for them to survive or get ahead in life even when they know that what they are doing isn't right. From the begging all the way to the end it was evident that the theme of hope was included in the book. While they are traveling they encounter many people and the son is the one that keeps his father from becoming belligerent and doing things that he knows isn't necessary. When they see that someone had taken there things and left, they tracked them down to get the stuff back. When they found the man the father wanted to take all of the mans clothiers that he had on but the son made him give them back. While on the road they also met Ely and they gave him something to eat and held conversation with him. When it was time to go they gave a portion of food to him even when the
Generally speaking, the two most frequently used genres in literature are fictional and non-fictional. Having said this, fictional and non-fictional literature are distinct regarding their purpose as well the literary devices they use. Literary devices are specific language methods which writers use to form text that is clear, interesting, and unforgettable. Fictional literature, for instance, is something that is made up; however, non-fictional is factual. Furthermore, non-fictional works of literature such as literary essays usually convey a message using literary devices that differ than those used in fictional literature such as short stories, which are meant to amuse its readers. Literary essays uses literary devices such as description,
An example of the themes love and grief is the day on which Corrigan, one of the main characters, dies in the first section of the novel in a car crash. Abelita connects with Corrigan through feelings and starts to develop those feelings more deeply. Abelita describes Corrigan throughout the narration:
In the novel, If I Stay, a choice has to be made. Whether to live or to die. Gayle Forman writes about the life of Mia Hall and the decisions she makes following the tragic car accident that killed her family. When she is in her coma, she is able to come out of her body and see everything that is happening around her. She can see her lifeless body, her boyfriend, Adam, the nurses, and her grandparents. Mia can hear what they say, but she has no way of responding. The theme of this novel is about choices because the whole story revolves around the choice that Mia makes. To me, the theme of the novel is: Choosing your future can be determined by the influence certain things have on your life. Mia has the choice to live and pursue her dreams of being a cellist at Juilliard, to live to be with her boyfriend and grandparents, or to die and be with her parents and brother again.
The story is driven by solid themes of forbidden love, never giving up, and survival. The time period, era, and culture feel authentic. Some of the visual images of the setting are stunning. The isolation of the island comes to life.
This book will pull on your heart-strings. It is filled with happy moments, many obstacles, life lessons, and tragedy. This story is about a teenage girl named Mia and her love for music, her adoring family, and her caring boyfriend Adam. Mia’s life is turned upside down when her entire family gets into a horrible car accident that ultimately questions all she thought was good in the world. I enjoyed this book because it was the perfect combination of dramatic and romantic. It was also well-written and although sad, had a satisfying ending.
