The male characters in Williams’ plays Tom, Mitch, Roger, and Brick were considered weak men. Tom Whitfield’ character in the “Glass Menagerie” he was a genuine young man that attempted to take care of his family in the absence of his father. The constant nagging of his mother caused tension in the household. This triggered him to drinking, staying out late. However, his lack of happiness at home triggered him to leave his family behind to save his own self-preservation. Mitch’ character in a “Streetcar Named Desire” he was a gentleman, and was interested in marrying Blanche’s sister Stella. Mitch was a pleasant gentleman until he was informed by Stanley that Blanche was a loose woman in the previous town, she visited before coming to
visit New Orleans. Mitch was extremely upset with Blanche in regards to her not telling him of her past. Roger was a musician in the band in “Summer and Smoke”. He asked Alma, “Whew! Golly! Moses! Well, how did it go, Miss Alma? Alma responds, how did what go? Roger responds annoyed stating his solo on the French horn; as if Alma should have been paying attention to him during his musical selection (Williams, 2000, pg. 589). Brick’s character in an “A Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” did not care that other men was interested in his wife Maggie; he did not care about anything other than drinking and his best friend Skipper; whom his wife Maggie attempted seduce in order to get her husband’s attention toward her. Subsequently, Skipper committed suicide because of this occurrence. Brick grieved Skipper’s death, the man he loved. On the other hand, Alvaro, Jim, Stanley, John, Big Daddy, and Rosario were brutes men. Alvaro’s character in the “Rose Tattoo” was a good looking young twenty five year old man that was looking for a woman to take care of him. His goal was to gain the interest of Serafina who he learned that she was a widow; he attempted to take advantage of her during her vulnerable state of losing her late husband. Alvaro got the same tattoo her late husband had to lure her interest towards him.
There was a game. The Westing Game. To find an heir. To win it all. Sixteen players. Eight teams. One winner. Who became the heir of Sam Westing. Sam Westing died, or supposedly did, and his sixteen heirs were trying to figure out who killed him, or if he was killed at all, which we found out, later in the novel was true. All of the teams had different clues, and they tried to figure out what those clues meant. Delicate Blanche, virile Stanley. Dynamic Maggie, impotent Brick. Williams' protagonists are distinctly different in temperament. In "A Streetcar Named Desire" Blanche exemplifies the stereotypical old south: educated, genteel, obsolete. Stanley is the new south: primitive, crude, ambitious. Blanche, a fading beauty, uses her sugary charm and soft southern ways to attract men. In comparison, Stanley "sizes women up at a glance, with sexual classifications" to "determine the way he smiles at them" (Williams, Street 29). Course and deliberately aggressive, he is a "survivor of the stone age" (Williams, Street 72). Despite their differences they both possess a raw sensuality. In their first confrontation, Blanche's thick display of charm angers and attracts Stanley. He wants her to be truthful and "lay her cards on the table" but simultaneously would "get ideas" about Blanche if she wasn't Stella's sister (Williams, Street 40-41). Their relationship overflows with sexual tension as they battle for Stella. Stanley, the new south, defeats Blanche, the old south. After destroying her chance for security, his sexual assault erases her last traces of sanity.

Tennessee Williams is known to be a Southern playwright of American drama. Williams knew how to show haunting elements like psychological drama, loneliness, and inexcusable violence in his plays. Critics say Williams often depicted women who were suffering from critical downfalls due to his sister Rose Williams. Rose was always fighting with a mental health condition known as schizophrenia all her life. The character Laura in The Glass Menagerie is always compared to Rose, because they were both socially awkward and very quiet girls. This may be true, but one can look at Blanche DuBois from A Street Car Named Desire shadows his sister’s life and characteristics more than Laura did. In the obituary of Rose Williams that was written by Philip Hoare, he says, “She grew up outgoing, using make-up earlier than other girls, and was remembered as “very pretty and a bit standoffish” (Hoare). This parallel sounds remarkably like Blanche and does not sound like Laura’s characteristics. Laura never wore make up and her personality did not keep others distant. She was distant to others, because of her disability. Also Roses down fall is very similar to Blanche DuBois down fall in the play and end result. Laura never has a down fall in The Glass Menagerie. Laura seems to have hope in the end of the play. Laura was a tribute to show Rose’s innocence, but Blanche was to show Rose’s true colors. Tennessee Williams uses elements of appearance, age, gentleman callers, sexuality, and the fear of homosexuality to show his sisters down fall in the character Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire.
In Tennessee William's play, The Glass Menagerie, the character of Tom is both a son and a brother. Tom has also been forced into the role as the man of the house because of his father's departure. The only male, Stanley is initially the macho force in the home who controls everything without question. He has no consequences for his actions against his wife and is never held accountable for treating the people around him poorly; this lasts until Blanche arrives. Blanche is an outwardly demure, but spirited young woman who after experiencing untold misfortune breaks mentally and decides to no longer care what others may think of her. She lives her life lavishly and foolishly by having dalliances with younger or richer men who shower her with gifts and attention to get sex from her all too willing form. Her effect on Stanley is one of temptation and challenge; she continually tries to convince her sister that she is too good for the man and in turn fosters a resentment for her in him. Stella acts as the antithesis of Stanley and Blanche’s extreme personalities. She is innocence and purity where they are the darkness that threatens to overtake her life.
