Whether you like it or not there is a hierarchy in Maycomb, it's true, I know exactly who the most/ least powerful person in Maycomb is. You may think that I am wrong but I can prove it to you. Alexandra Finch is the most powerful person and Tom Robinson is the least , I mean how can you possibly not agree. Anyways, Aunt Alexandra is a wealthy woman who has “boarding school manners” and isn't afraid to correct or judge someone. On the other hand, Tom Robinson is a black man who has been accused of rape by a white man in the 1930s which were years that overflowed with discrimination. Within the hierarchy of Maycomb, Alexandra Finch has the most power because she is very wealthy and has alot of education and Tom Robinson has the least power because he is a poor African American in the 1920’s who has not one say in any situation.

the most power in the hierarchy of Maycomb because he is a respected and educated attorney and is a family man. He’s also a sharpshooter and can protect Maycomb when it's needed. Some may also argue that Boo Radley has the least power in the hierarchy of Maycomb because he has no familial support and no one cares about what he has to say. He is not loved but is instead feared from everyone and he stays inside his home all the time because he was “sentenced” by his father to lifetime confinement. Alexandra Finch is shown to have the most power in Maycomb. In chapter 13, Scout is visited by her Aunt Alexandra to help around the house because Scout has no mother. Scout describes he aunt and says “Aunt Alexandra was the last of her kind: she had a river-boat , boarding school manners; let any morals come along and she would uphild it.” (Lee 172). This demonstrates that Alexandra's power because she is very wealthy, has a lot of education, and she is very wellmannerd. Also in chapter 13, Scout realizes that her aunt is obsessed with the topic of heredity and the morals she follows along the way. Scout thinks that “ Aunt Alexandra was of the opinion, obliquely expressed, that the longer a family had been squatting on one patch of land, the finer it was.” (Lee 173). This demonstrates Aunt Alexandra's power because she has a lot of business sense and can handle any situation regardless of the inequality of gender they had back then. In Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, Alexandra Finch is shown to have the most power because she's very well educated/ wealthy and can handle any financial/ business situation. Tom Robinson is shown to have the least power.
In chapter 12, Atticus is trying to explain to Calpurnia that Tom Robinson is in jail so he cannot support his family at the moment. Atticus says “Cal, I know Tom Robinson is in jail but why wont folks hire Helen.” (Lee 164). This demonstrates Tom Robinson's power because he doesn't have enough money to support his family and because he is accused of rape, nobody wants to have anything to with the Robinsons. In chapter 9, Atticus is discussing the case with his brother Jack. They know there is a very low chance of actually winning this case. Atticus says to Jack “It couldn't be worse Jack. The only thing we've got is a black mans word against the Ewells… the jury couldn't possibly be expected to take Tom Robinson's word against the Ewells.’’(Lee 116-117). This demonstrates Tom Robinson's power because he's an African American man during a time of immense discrimination so he has no say in anything at all. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Tom Robinson's power because he's a poor black man during the great depression and has no say in anything
whatsoever. Maycomb has a hierarchy that everyone takes on a serious note. Aunt Alexandra is at the top of the hierarchy and is the person who takes this “caste system” most serious. On the other hand, people like Tom Robinson are probably not even aware of the fact there is a hierarchy in Maycomb. Many people are judged in Maycomb for their race, gender, beliefs, etc. People in Maycomb are judged for what they don’t have and are put into a system of ranks that determine who you are as a person. Although there has been many major changes in society today, there are still people living by this wrong hierarchy. Hierarchies should not be a thing at any time or place.
In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus says “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win” (Chapter 9). In this book, Atticus takes the case when Tom Robinson took advantage of a white woman, Mayella Ewell. Even though Tome was convicted guilty in this case, it was right for Atticus to defend Tom Robinson.
First, Tom, formally known as Thomas Robinson was a black man who worked for a man named Link Deas. Tom was 25 years old, had three children and a wife named Helen. When he was 11 years old Tom’s left arm was caught in a cotton gin and he lost feeling in his left arm. Tom was accused of rape by a white woman named Mayella. Everyone hated him because it didn’t look good for a black man to be accused of raping a white woman. During his trial he had a white lawyer named Atticus, who did his best to prove that Tom was innocent and Mayella and her dad Bob Ewell were lying. Atticus says,”Did you resist her advances?, Mr.Finch, I tried to ‘thout bein ugly to her. I didn’t wanta push her or nothin.” stated Tom(Lee 195). Tom did not want to kiss her but he didn’t
This shows that Atticus and his family are put on a lower level than normal citizens. Pre-conceived opinions are able to make people opposed to changing them as well, with the ideas sticking in Maycomb. The hierarchy or order of people is severely deformed in Maycomb, as normal, well-meaning people are discriminated against and put at the bottom of the pack simply because of the colour of their skin.... ... middle of paper ...
Tom Robinson was negatively affected by racism because it lead to his death after an unfair trial. Atticus says “Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella Ewells opened her mouth and screamed”(Lee 323). Since Tom, a black man, was accused of raping Mayella, a white woman, Tom wasn’t going to win the court case because he was a black man against a white woman. Tom Robinson said ”Mr. Finch, if you was a n…. like me, you’d be scared too.”(Lee 261). This quote proves that Tom believed that he didn't think that he wasn’t going to win the trial, and that's why he tried to run from jail so he had somewhat of a chance. Tom Robinson’s life was ruined by racism was.
In this story Atticus defends Tom Robinson with compassion. Atticus is a very respected upper class white. He comes from an old family and works for the state legislature. He was asked to just be the lawyer not to actually defend. When Atticus states, "I'm simply defending a Negro his name's Tom Robinson. (Lee 75) I think that the quote secures the position that Atticus clearly wants to defend him. He wants everyone in the courtroom to know the truth. "That boy may go to the chair, but not till the truth's been told….."(Lee 46) When Atticus says this I begin to see that his courage is amazing. In this time racism is high and Atticus stands up for what is right no matter if his life is endangered. Even though there was evidence proving that Tom Robinson was innocent the lop-sided jury found Tom guilty. Atticus insured Tom that he would make an appeal.
In they story, Atticus shows love towards Tom Robinson throughout he whole case. Atticus took Tom's case because he believes that everyone's equal "This case is something that goes to the essence of a mans conscience- Scout, I couldn't go to church and worship God if I didn't try to help that man. The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a persons conscience." (Atticus, 139). This quote shows that Atticus believes Tom is the same as everyone else and that if he didn't defend Tom he wouldn't
Nearly the whole last half of the book is about racism. The attitude of the whole town is that Tom Robinson, because he is black and,"…all Negroes lie,…all Negroes are basically immoral beings,…all Negro men are not to be trusted around our women…"(Lee 207), will be found guilty regardless of how good a case Atticus makes for him. There was substantial amount of evidence that suggests his innocence. Even the prosecution's two witnesses' stories contradicted each other. The jury did not give a guilty verdict it gave a racist verdict. Not a verdict based on fact, but a verdict based on the color of a man's skin. This is important because the author was not making this racism up; it was what it was like in those times. She is trying to show how ignorant and blind people can be just because of differences between them, as well as how society treats racial minorities.
Yet he took the case with no hesitation. Atticus knows the difference between what is fair and what is true justice. He is well aware that whites and blacks have many differences with one another, but is also educated enough to know that there truly is no diversity in equity, and tries to teach everyone including his children this. ”You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view- until you climb into his skin and walk around it.(30)” Atticus is encouraging Scout to respect everyone and consider their true potential without considering false accusations in this quote. He applies what he teaches to his children to the people attending the Tom Robinson trial. Atticus is just one man, but with an unprecedented amount of sense of pride, intelligence, and justice. He reflects the image of the town’s people by showing them what they’ve allowed themselves to become based on their beliefs. He genuinely expresses their deepest consternation. In this quote he tells the audience what they are afraid to hear, but need to hear, “She was white, and she tempted a Negro. She did something that in our society is unspeakable: she kissed a black man. Not an old uncle, but a strong young Negro man. No code mattered to her before she broke it, but it came crashing down on her afterwards.(272)” After stating his point and releasing the profound truth Atticus causes for Mayella and Bob Ewell to lose their composure. Nevertheless people of most of the white people of Maycomb continue to refuse to believe that a white woman kissed a black man. But they undoubtedly believe that a black man with a useless left hand beat and raped an “innocent” white woman. Atticus could have predicted the outcome from before he even took the case and refused to defend Tom Robinson. But he
Atticus shows great compassion and tolerance when he stands up for the Negroes. He stands up and represents Tom Robinson because he believes that everyone should be treated equally in the court of law. He knows that because Tom was a Negro there would be a slim chance of winning. That fact never discouraged him though because he says that the main reason he is representing Tom is because, ' if I didn't I couldn't hold up my head in town, I couldn't represent this county in the legislature'; (75). He recited a speech, which clearly states that Tom Robinson is not guilty. In that speech he says, 'our courts have their faults, as does any human institution, but in this courts are the great levelers, and in our courts all men are created equal'; (205). He believed that prejudice and stereotyping is wrong and he tries to teach these morals to Scout and Jem.
Tom Robinson has a wife and three kids. Atticus wants the jury and the people in the courtroom to understand the weight of their decision. If they say that he is guilty, then he will be sentenced to death and his children will grow up without a father. No matter how much someone might hate another, they should never do that to a person's family.
This type of discrimination made African American victims of jails and crimes that they did not even consider doing but were thought of doing because of racial segregation enforcement (popularity?) within the Southern society of the US. However, Atticus was different and believed that Tom robinson is innocent since he understood (understands?) how people discriminate others and was aware (is aware) of different types of prejudice (in that time period). So, due to Atticus’ good morals and values, he was willing to try his best to support the truth (who was
Tom Robinson’s trial, and in fact his entire life, was badly affected by racism. It is truly a testament to the corruption of society when a person who has earned a bad reputation is held in higher esteem than a person who was born with it, as is the case with Bob Ewell and Tom Robinson. Even though Tom was obviously honest in his testament, the jury sided with Bob Ewell because he was white. They made this decision despite the fact that the Ewell family was widely known to be a worthless part of society. Jem, not being racially prejudiced, could not understand this mentality. As Atticus pointed out, “If you (Jem) had been on the jury, son, and eleven other boys like you, Tom would be a free man.”
The one place where a man ought to get a square deal is in a courtroom, be he any color of the rainbow, but people have a way of carrying their resentments right into a jury box”(Lee 220). This is how Atticus described the trial to his son Jem because he could not comprehend how unjust the trial was unfolding on a daily basis. The proceedings were not equitable towards Tom Robinson because everyone should have realized at the trial that he had not done anything wrong. In the end, Atticus lost the trial. Not because the jury and judge thought Tom Robinson had committed the crime, but simply because he was black and they were racist.
Atticus was incredibly courageous taking on tom Robinsons case against the prejudice of Macomb County and he shows incredible courage when he says, "Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try and won." He wants the people of Maycomb to hear the truth about Tom Robinson, "That boy may go to the chair, but he's not going till the truth's told." Chapter 15, Page 146. He was against the whole white community including his own sister practically said that he was a disgrace to his family Atticus tells scout when she asks him why he is taking the case he says "For a number of reasons. The main one is, if I didn't I couldn't hold up my head in town, I couldn't represent this county in the legislature, I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something again.
Firstly, we can see that within the social hierarchy of Maycomb, both Tom Robinson
