YESTERDAY- In Maycomb County, Tom Robinson, a coloured man, was put on trial for his life accused of rape. The man Tom Robinson was accused by Mayella Ewell, the daughter of Robert Ewell. The accused crime took place on November 21st, 1935 in the house that belongs to Robert Ewell and his family. The court appointed Atticus Finch for the defence of Tom Robinson. Mayella Ewell was left with injurys on the head and neck more on the right side of her body, including bruises and a black eye. Being a public trial, the courthouse quickly filled with people from all over town waiting to see what Atticus Finch could do for the defence of Tom Robinson. The case began and Heck Tate was the first witness called to the stand. Mr. Tate claimed that Mr. Ewell came up Ewell could read and write, and Robert Ewell proved himself by writing his name for the courthouse with his left hand. The next witness was the alleged victim, Mayella Ewell. She gave the same story that Mr. Ewell and Mr. Tate gave. When asked by Atticus Finch if she loved her father, she responded with “He does tollable, ‘cept when-“ and she stopped talking. “Except when he’s drinking” Mr. Finch finished for her. The final witness called up to the stand was Tom Robinson. Mr. Robinson claimed that day to have been walking home as normal, when Mayella called him into her house to help her out with something. When he entered the house, she was home alone and tried to kiss him. Mr. Robinson, being coloured, did not want to push her off of him but did try to resist. Tom Robinson said he saw Mr. Ewell look in through the window and ran as soon as he could, not wanting to risk ending up on trial for his life. When Atticus Finch asked Mr. Robinson if he raped Mayella, he responded with “I did not, suh”.
