Tom and Daisy Buchanan, millionaires from East Egg, seem to be having marriage problems. As stated by a witness, Tom had been getting mysterious phone calls every day. Tom has also gone out of town multiple times for many excused reasons. Some even say it is possible Tom may be having an affair with another woman. We interviewed a close friend of the married couple on her thoughts and she said “Tom definitely has another woman in Chicago, no doubt.” Another friend of theirs, Nick, claims that he was at their house for a meal when Tom had gotten a phone call. He also claims that he when Tom and Daisy were returning to the table they were have a pretty loud discussion. It is sometimes very common for partners in marriage to be insecure or have …show more content…
some trust issues. Although, Tom claims he is not having an affair, his actions make it seem to be the complete opposite.
We also interviewed Tom Buchanan and this is what he said “Yes, many things are being said but that doesn’t mean any of it is true, don’t believe everything you hear for all you know it maybe be a lie”. Mr. Buchanan sure seemed very convincing. We also asked to which places he had recently traveled to but he decided to not give up any of that information. Tom and Daisy Buchanan are not only married but have a little daughter at about the age of three. When Daisy was interviewed about her thoughts on her marriage she said “It’s going quite well, Tom is a sweetheart but sometimes a brut. He’s very nice and a good daughter”. The Buchanan’s have a history of traveling over the world a lot. They have finally decided to settle in a very fashionable place called East Egg. Daisy and Tom live with a butler as well and we have decided to interview the man as well. The butler said “I don’t remember Mr. Buchanan’s callers; I just pass them on to him so there isn’t much to say”. Tom Buchanan’s “affair” is still very unknown. Many say that East Egg is far more fashionable than West Egg. Of course both sides are very wealthy cities filled with wealthy people but there are many
differences. We interviewed a fellow citizen that has lived in both parts and this is what he said; “I lived at West Egg, the – well, the less fashionable of the two, though this is a most superficial tag to express the bizarre and not a little sinister contrast between them.” To many it seemed as if West Egg tries a lot to be the richest it can be that the things start to look cheap. Many celebrities live in both parts. On the West Egg side Gatsby, Jordan baker, and Tom and Daisy Buchanan, some of the included celebrities that live in the area. Many people also include that West Egg is one of the most popular places known for people settling down and finally stop traveling around. It is full of big nice houses of course owned by wealthy people. A man named Nick also describes East Egg by its colors as he explained “Across the courtesy bay the white palaces of fashionable East Egg glittered along the water and the History of the summer really begins on the evening I drove over there to have dinner with the Tom Buchanans.” We interviewed a few celebrities and one had said “Yes, I also lived in West Egg and I like East Egg far more than West Egg. Everything seems better, richer, less phony and extremely way more elegant.” Seems as though the citizens in East Egg are more enjoyable rather than problematic as the say. East egg, as they say is full of cheerful citizens and has great big parties. It also has bright pure colors such as white, red and gold. It is at a higher social class and very popular. East Egg is nick named unfashionable. As one fellow citizen explained; fashionable meant tacky also known as too wealthy that it starts looking fake or phony. West Egg and East Egg are separated by a pretty large calm bay. We talked again with the interviewer Nick to see what else he had to say about why he moved back to West Egg and didn’t stay in East Egg. He explained that East Egg citizens have a habit of being very judging. He felt that there were not many adventures or new experiences for him in West Egg so he decided to come back and settle in East Egg and only visit West Egg at certain times and occasions. It has always been looked at in this point of view. Today according to many people West Egg has far more pure citizens then East Egg has had over the past years. Well according to people living in the West, West Egg has more of a fashionable appearance and should be looked upon higher social status then the other side which is East Egg.
Daisy stays with the Tom, because in that particular time period it was wrong to be divorced. One place the story shows the affair, is in the New York apartment. It states “She’s a Catholic and they don’t believe in divorce.’ Daisy was not a Catholic…”- (Fitzgerald 38). This quote shows that it would be against public morals to divorce Tom. Daisy appears to claim that she is “higher” then divorcing someone. The time period affected their relationship, because it was looked down upon. “Neither of them can stand the person they’re married to.”(Fitzgerald 37). This shows that even though they hate each other they constantly stay together. They don’t want to be looked down upon. In conclusion, the unhealthy balance of their relationship and social status is nowhere to be
“Some time toward midnight Tom Buchanan and Mrs. Wilson stood face to face discussing, in impassioned voices, whether Mrs. Wilson had any right to mention Daisy’s name.”
From the outside, Daisy seems like the demure wife of a wealthy ex-football player, Tom Buchannan. The relationship the two share is far from a perfect marriage, but it is functional for upper-class society. Daisy often speaks nonsense, putting off the impression that she lacks intelligence, but there are moments when Daisy shows her true nature. The first moment occurs when Daisy shares
Initially, while Tom Buchanan may seem like a wealthy, educated individual through his comments about racial hierarchy and social supremacy, it is gradually revealed that Tom is a victim of the carelessness that wealth can breed. His wealth provides him with an excuse for the poor decisions he makes and so, Tom is able to live life without a single thought about consequences. For instance,
Daisy Buchanan, this woman is crazy, uncaring, and many would argue cold hearted. She is married to Tom and yet, has an affair with Gatsby. Tom is her husband, a very well-off man that goes off and has affairs, and never attempts to hide the fact. Then there is Gatsby. Ah, Gatsby. The young man she was so in love with as a teenage girl. Tom and Gatsby have many similarities; from the fact that both Tom and Gatsby want Daisy all to themselves to the fact that they both love her. While they share many similarities they have far more numerable differences between them. The differences range from how they treat her to how rich they and what social class they are in, to the simple fact that Tom lives in “East Egg” and Gatsby in “West Egg.” Both the similarities and differences between these two men are what ultimately cause Daisy to believe that she is in love with Tom more than she is with Gatsby.
Tom Buchanan and his West Egg comrades, despite having everything they could ever want, lack something vitally important: a heart. The soulless creatures of the West Egg believe that all must bow down to them and their glorious wealth and do as they please, while they did nothing to deserve the money in the first place. “His speaking voice, a gruff husky tenor, added to the impression of fractiousness he conveyed. There was a ...
Throughout the novel, one of Tom 's biggest careless acts was when he cheated on Daisy. Tom is a cocky, confident man shown many times throughout the novel like when Nick arrived at his house and "Tom Buchanan in riding clothes was standing with his legs apart on the front porch" (Fitzgerald 6). His stance showed his arrogance, and how highly he thought of himself because of his wealth. Tom was a man who often acted without thinking things through, like having an affair with Myrtle. Despite both Tom and Myrtle being married, they both had affairs. Tom doesn 't hide his affair from Nick and introduces him to his mistress Myrtle at Wilson 's garage. Tom doesn 't seem to care if anyone finds out because he feels as though nothing would change due to his wealth. While at Myrtle 's husbands garage, Tom tells Myrtle to meet him at the train station. They end up going to their apartment in New York City that they keep for their affair. While at the Morningside Height 's apartment Myrtle starts to talk about Tom 's wife Daisy, ""Daisy! Daisy! Daisy!" shouted Mrs. Wilson. "I 'll say it whenever I want to! Daisy! Dai-"" (Fitzgerald 37). Tom didn 't like Myrtle overstepping her boundaries and to show
Our story unravels early on in The Great Gatsby, Nick's very wealthy cousin, Daisy, simply has it all: she is beautiful and graceful; her bank account is large; she's traveled and knows people no matter where she goes. Her husband, Tom Buchanan, is without a doubt very lucky to be with her; but there's a ripple in this perfect couple: he's cheating on her. Not only is Tom cheating on her, but he's cheating on her with someone of a far lesser class; which makes the reader question why he's with her in the first place. Daisy had a very good reputation among the elite; she had never done anything that would have embarrassed her. "They moved with a fast crowd, all of them young and rich and wild, but she came out with an absolutely perfect reputation" (82). This illustrates how well put together Daisy is, he has used her, and continues to use her not only for her wealth, but also for her firm social standing. She could, literally, make or break Tom depending merely on whether or not she stayed with him; of course he'd remain with her, she defined his social standing.
From the first chapter, we are introduced to the Buchanans, who apparently have it all. Contrary to appearances though, they are miserable. The first sign of unhappiness is Tom's need for another woman other than his wife. This is made known by the very indiscrete Jordan Baker, who mentions this fact to Nick Carraway: "Tom's got some woman in New York....She might have the decency not to telephone him at dinner time. Don't you think?"(Fitzgerald 20) This remark is made in response to Daisy's abrupt reaction, when hearing the telephone. Later on in the novel, the telephone is again used as a means of insinuating Tom's affair, when Jordan is once again, more than eager to tell everybody what the Buchanan's situation is: "The rumor is that that's Tom's gir...
Undoubtedly, Tom and Daisy Buchanan exceedingly demonstrate the wealthy class's lack of integrity. Their lives are filled with material comforts and luxuries and completely empty of true purpose. Daisy's lament is especially indicative of this:
Tom and Daisy Buchanan, the rich couple, seem to have everything they could possibly want. Though their lives are full of anything you could imagine, they are unhappy and seek to change, Tom drifts on "forever seeking a little wistfully for the dramatic turbulence of some irrecoverable football game"(pg. 10) and reads "deep books with long words in them"(pg. 17) just so he has something to talk about. Even though Tom is married to Daisy he has an affair with Myrtle Wilson and has apartment with her in New York.. Daisy is an empty character, someone with hardly any convictions or desires. Even before her relationships with Tom or, Gatsby are seen, Daisy does nothing but sit around all day and wonder what to do with herself and her friend Jordan. She knows that Tom is having an affair, yet she doesn't leave him even when she hears about Gatsby loving her. Daisy lets Gatsby know that she too is in love with him but cant bring herself to tell Tom goodbye except when Gatsby forces her too. Even then, once Tom begs her to stay, even then Daisy forever leaves Gatsby for her old life of comfort. Daisy and Tom are perfect examples of wealth and prosperity, and the American Dream. Yet their lives are empty, and without purpose.
Their reactions to this betrayal have some similarities and differences. Both husbands reacted simile in the way they tried to keep their wives anyway from the person they were cheating with. After learning about their wives discrepancies both men become more willing to fight for their wives affection. The two of them would do anything necessary to get their wives back. But Tom and George had different methods in separating their wives from that other person who they were cheating with. Tom did so by learning incriminating evidence about Gatsby just to exploit his false persona to Daisy. During his exploitation, Tom, “...picked him for a bootlegger the first time I saw him and wasn’t far wrong.”(133) These facts freighted Daisy and made her believe that she didn’t actually really know of Gatsby was. This lead to Daisy returning to her husband, Tom. Myrtle, his wife, by literally separating her from returning to the other man. He locks her in their upstairs bedroom and began preparing the couple to move west anyway from the man she was having an affair
What is Tom’s reaction to Daisy’s affair? Why do you think he has that reaction? (2)
Nick is astonished at this information. He finds it hard to believe that Tom, with a beautiful wife and child, would be having an affair with some woman in the city. Miss Baker thinks “everybody knew” about the affair, yet Daisy is still with Tom. Being too ignorant to make herself believe it’s true, Daisy is willing to stay in the marriage, even when she is presented with an opportunity from Gatsby to escape. Daisy is willing to stay with Tom just because he has “old money,” and that shows how important it is to her. Everyone else’s morals are just as bad as Tom’s because they know about what’s going on and know that it’s wrong, but they don’t say anything about it. Later in the story, when Wilson is looking for the driver of the yellow car that killed Myrtle, he also suspects that person of having an affair with...
Second of all, The relationship that Daisy and Tom have is not truly love but it once was.The relationship Daisy and Tom have is very complicated one because they are both having an affair with different people but are still married to each other. In addition they are aware their spouses affairs but their still together.
