Even though Jay Gatsby was believed to be the one who ran over Myrtle, which caused George to snap, Tom Buchanan is the instigator that caused the whole situation. Tom instigated the situation in many ways including being the one to have an affair with Myrtle, pushing Gatsby to leave the hotel with Daisy in a fury, and making George think everything was Gatsby’s fault and basically telling him to get revenge. Tom Buchanan is responsible for Gatsby’s death because he had an affair with Myrtle, caused Gatsby to snap, and instigated George into going after Gatsby. ‘She’s going to stay there till the day after to-morrow, and then we’re going to move away,’ Michaelis was astonished; they had been neighbors for four years, and Wilson had never seemed faintly capable of such a statement”(Fitzgerald 105). Myrtle and Tom’s affair was driving George crazy, making irrational statements he would’ve never even been thought to be capable of making. This pushes George towards killing Gatsby and it's Tom’s fault. Another time it’s seen that Tom’s affair with Myrtle is a cause for Gatsby’s death is George and Myrtle’s argument over moving away because of the affair. The affair with Myrtle drove a wedge between George and Myrtle, causing a huge argument. This argument is the reason Myrtle ran out in front of the car after George went too far, she then got hit and killed by Gatsby. During the argument, George made the mistake of hitting Myrtle and “a moment later she rushed out into the dusk, waving her hands and shouting — before [George] could move from his door, the business was over”(Fitzgerald 105). Tom is the one who caused this argument, and this argument resulted in Myrtle’s death, so Tom Buchanan is the true reason George got pushed to the edge and is responsible for Jay Gatsby’s
