To What Extent Did The Americans Win The Revolutionary War Essay

The American Revolution was a long lasting war between the Americans and the British. Both sides had many obstacles to get through, but in the end the British were defeated. But there is a question. Did the Americans win or did the British lose? During this time, the American’s goal was to gain their independence, while the British’s goal was to stop the revolution all together, the end of it is well known, the Americans gained their independence. Now, to answer the question, most people would say, the Americans won and the British lost, but this is not the case. To determine a victory in war, the winning side must have obtained what they wanted in the beginning, and is what happened to the Americans. Although some may say that the British lost, since they were the ones who didn’t reach their ultimate goal. The Americans won because they were able

to win their independence from the British.
The British was the cause of the Revolution, owing to the fact that they treated the Americans differently, compared to their English subjects.

During the stage of Salutary Neglect, the British did not tax the Americans as much as they taxed their own people. But during this time, the Americans were able to develop their own government, which gave them enlightened ideas, which led to their idea of revolution. Like any country that has a revolution on their hands, their main goal would be to stop the revolution at any costs. The letters between General Cornwallis and to Henry Clinton shows many of the different goals the British had. For example, their goal during the war of 1776 was to conquer New York and use it as a base to vanquish the other colonies. Their goal during the war 1777-1778 was to separate New England from the other colonies. And their final goal for the war in the South, which took place from 1778-1781, their goal was to retake South Carolina to attempt at defeating the colonists. The British were not able to complete their goals, which induced their loss in the American

Revolution.
While under the control of the British, they were happy for a time, but when the British started taxing them heavily, like the Stamp act and the Townshend Acts, they began to grow restless. They didn’t want to be taxed, or ruled by a government that was overseas. They wanted to rule themselves, and so they decided to revolt. The Americans had one goal, and one goal only, and that was to gain their independence from the British. Throughout the Revolution, their main goal stayed the same, unlike the British. This is evident in the Declaration ... Setting Forth the Causes and Necessity of Their Taking Up Arms written by the Continental Congress. In the Declaration, the Congress states, “In our own native land, in defence of the freedom that is our birthright...hostilities shall cease on the part of the aggressors…” (Continental Congress). The quote explains their goal which was to obtain their freedom, and to continuously fight until the British stopped.
Determining a victory in war looks simple, because all that has to be done is to look at who surrendered and who came out victorious. However, it is not as easy as it looks. When determining who won in a war, the outcome has to be looked at from every possible angle. How big of an impact did the outcome have on either side? Did the winning side get what they wanted? While inspecting the American Revolution, one can already decide that the Americans won. The Americans won because they were able to gain independence and there is a written evidence of the American’s victory, the Treaty of Paris. The purpose of the Treaty of Paris was to show that the British and the Americans would end the war between them, and to show that the Americans rightfully gained their independence. However others may say the British lost the Revolution, rather than saying the Americans won. Yet, when examining it closely, the British would not have experienced as big of a loss as the Americans would if the Americans lost. All the British lost was the land that was colonized in America, some of their people, and some profits. If the Americans were to lose, they would still be under the control of the British.
In the end, the Americans were the victorious ones, physically and metaphorically.
