On Monday, many people gathered at Maycomb County Courthouse for what is possibly the biggest trial in Maycomb history. Men, women, and children of both races stopped their daily activities to come and watch the trial. So many people came to witness the trial that some had to stand because all the seats were taken. The case is about a black man who is being accused of raping a white girl. The alleged rape took place on November 21. Tom Robinson, a negro, is on trial for the alleged rape of a white female. The victim is nineteen year old Mayella Ewell, the daughter of Bob Ewell. When asked what he saw, Bob Ewell said “I seen that black nigger yonder ruttin’ on my Mayella!” When Mayella Ewell took the stand she was very emotional. Mayella asked Tom Robinson to bust up a chiffarobe for her. She went inside her house to get a nickel for him when he came inside and grabbed her from behind and started beating her. Mayella said “he chunked me on the floor an’ choked me’n took advantage of me.” Tom Robinson fled when Bob Ewell yelled and started coming in the house. …show more content…
When Tom Robinson took the stand, his memory of November 21 was basically the opposite of Mayella’s statement.
Tom says that Mayella invited him inside to fix a door. Tom noticed the door was not broken and tried to leave, but Mayella shut the door in his face. Mayella then asked Tom to remove a box off the top of a chiffarobe. While Tom was stand in a chair Mayella grabbed Tom and hugged him. Tom Robinson states “Mr. Finch, I got down offa that chair an’ turned around an’ she sorta jumped on me.” Then Mayella kissed Tom on the side of his face. Bob Ewell saw the him through the window and started yelling at him. Tom Robinson flex when Bob Ewell came after
him. There were a red thing the lawyers wanted the jury to notice. One was that Bob Ewell was left handed. Another was that Mayella was banged up on the right side of her face. Another thing was that Tom Robinson’s arm was useless due to an accident. This shows that it would have been almost impossible for Tom to beat Mayella, but her father easily could have. The jury look an extremely long time to come to a decision. The courtroom was completely silent while everyone waited on Judge Taylor to total up the jury. Judge Taylor announced that Tom Robinson was found guilty. The jury found Tom Robinson guilty for the tape of Mayella Ewell.
On March 25, 1931 nine African American youths were falsely accused and wrongfully imprisoned for the rape of two white girls. Over the next six consecutive years, trials were held to attempt to prove the innocence of these nine young men. The court battles ranged from the U.S Supreme court to the Scottsboro county court with almost every decision the same---guilty. Finally, with the proceedings draining Alabama financially and politically, four of the boys ...
The concept of a white woman being touched, let alone raped by an African American male was an assumption in the little town of Maycomb Alabama, 1930’s. During this period Mayella is considered helpless due to being a female as well as lonely and afraid considering her status as a poor white piece of trash. She manipulates people by using her social class, gender, and race to her advantage. In particular, her accusations made against Tom Robinson, an African American man. These factors lead to her gaining power with the trial and conviction of Tom Robinson. Race refers to the categorization of people based on physical differences.(“Is Mayella Powerful?” 7) Mayella Ewell had perquisites due to her race, which helped her during the conviction.
The Scottsboro trials occurred on March 25th, 1931. On trial were nine falsely accused black boys who had been the accused rapists of two white women. Similarly, In To Kill a Mockingbird, Tom Robinson, a black man, was tried for the rape of a young white woman, Mayella Ewell. In both trials the men were found guilty and sentence to life in prison or death.
Mayella (white), goes to court against Tom Robinson (African American), where Mayella is accusing Tom Robinson of rape. When Atticus asks Mayella questions, Atticus mishears Mayella. An example of Mayella’s lack of power is when Atticus closes his argument by describing Mayella’s injuries during the court case. “Mayella Ewell was beaten savagely by someone who led almost exclusively with his left.”
Bob Ewell, after seeing Mayella with Tom Robinson, knows that Tom Robinson has done nothing, and that Mayella is the culprit of this circumstance. However, Bob Ewell makes claims against Tom Robinson because the culture of this society has been formed to
Throughout the novel, Bob Ewell is profusely illustrated as an abrasive, abusive, and generally unpleasant man who hasn’t a care for his children. As Tom says when describing why he would help Mayella: “Mr. Ewell didn’t seem to help her much” (263) . In addition, Bob Ewell plays a major role as to why Mayella lies in court, in fact he makes her do so. To cover up for his own crime he says that Tom Robinson was “ruttin' on my Mayella!" (231) . The most substantive and saddening display of Mr. Ewell’s character is when Tom directly reveals the abuse taking place. In his testimony, Tom explains that his accuser threatens Mayella after seeing the two of them together (263). Even if Mayella was able to overcome the social repercussions of telling the truth, she would face the tragic domestic abuse that her father is evidently capable of. Like striving towards acceptance, resisting oppression is another example of human instinct. As following instinct is by definition natural, one must have sympathy for Mayella
Tom Robinson is a kind black man whom Atticus is defending against the charge that he raped Mayella Ewell. Atticus knows that he will lose because Tom is black, but he also knows that Tom is innocent and that he has to defend him. Tom Robinson is portrayed as a hard-working father and husband in the novel and he was only attempting to help Mayella since no one else would, but she made advances that he refused and her father saw them. On the witness stand, he testifies that he helped her because, "'Mr. Ewell didn't seem to help her none, and neither did the chillun.'" (256). Even though Tom helps Mayella out of kindness and pity, Mayella is trapped and must accuse him of raping her to save her own life. Shortly after being wrongfully convicted
During the Tom Robinson Trial, Mayella is called up to the chair, asked a few questions and after she has had enough, she screams, "I got something to say and then I ain't gonna say no more. That nigger yonder took advantage of me an'if you fine fancy gentlemen don ' t wanta do nothin'about it then you're all yellow stinkin'cowards, stinkin'cowards, the lot of you. Your fancy airs don't come to nothin '—your ma 'amin'and Miss Mayellerin'don't come to nothin ', Mr. Finch-" (She is scared of the town knowing that she is wrong and Tom Robinson is innocent.
One of the storylines in the novel is the Robinson-Ewell trial. Tom Robinson is an innocent African-American, accused of raping Mayella Ewell, a lower-class white girl. At the trial hearing, everyone is able to tell his or her side of the story before Tom is allowed to speak. All stories, however, offer two different versions of Tom and Mayella’s relationship. Moreover, Mayella and Bob Ewell tell the jury what they expect to hear, about Tom being a monster. They explain that there was no reason for his actions against Mayella. According to them, along with the rest of Maycomb, it's just expected that a black man would rape any white woman if he had the opportunity. The Tom spoken of by the Ewells shows the stereotypes that justify whites to be superior to blacks. However, Tom tells the jury about his innocence. He pr...
Bob Ewell is afraid that Blacks will take over or gain higher power over Whites so he works to keep the Black population suppressed by the Whites. One way that he showed this was by falsely accusing Tom Robinson of a crime that he never committed. He accused Tom of raping his daughter, Mayella, because he was ashamed that his daughter attempted to kiss a black man. Because of Bob’s fear of Blacks, Tom is dead....
When a change of venue was made in Simpson’s trial it caused a big difference within the cases. It was deliberately not considered in Tom 's trial because in the end it was concluded that a change of venue would not be necessary since any jury would find a black man guilty in any case when it is his word against a white woman’s word. OJ’s case was changed and moved to the downtown district, in Santa Monica, instead of where the crime incident occurred to avoid racial imbalances and to accommodate the media inferno in Los Angeles (Kennedy, David and Cohen 113). This also led to the change of the jury because this also had a major effect on the result of OJ’s trial. If a change of venue was also made in Tom’s trial the outcome would be drastically different. In Maycomb, a small Southern town where Tom was from, everyone was quite interested in the case and had a negative opinion about Tom which resulted in him being treated unequally as if he was not a citizen of the United States. Tom was just concluded as an evil and an unreasonable black man while OJ was seen as a great NFL all-star who would never commit a
The courthouse is full of lightness below and darkness above. My view for the trial is up above on the balcony. Post 2 We’re now underway here at Maycomb Courthouse with Officer Heck Tate being the witness to testify for the prosecutor.
While talking to the police, the women accused all of the black men of raping them. These women were known prostitutes of the area, but their word was still taken over the black men who were accused. Twelve days later, the trial took place. There were many witnesses that held bias towards the black men. One acquaintance of the women was a white lady who refused to support the lies that were coming out of the white women's mouths.
Tom Robinson is accused of raping Mayella Ewell. Robinson is caught with Mayella in the Ewell residence by her father Bob Ewell. Bob swears by everything that he saw Mr. Robinson taking advantage of his daughter, Mayella. Robinson supposedly runs out of the back door of the house and Bob states he does not beat Mayella. Then Bob storms into the sherif...
