A little over a week ago, I was hopping into my car to drive home following an intense cross country workout. Too caught up in pondering my splits for our three mile time trial and how proud I was of the effort I had put forth, I had completely dismissed that I had a thirty minute piano lesson at 5pm immediately following my cross country practice. After turning on the car, I glanced down at the digital clock completely unaware of my predicament...5:04. I immediately realized that I was in trouble. Not only would I be late...I would surrender half of my expensive lesson time. Still, realizing that I did not want to waste my parents’ money and my teacher’s time, I instantaneously zoomed out of the LCHS parking lot, sped along the freeway, exited, and returned home. We are too caught up in the present and what we are doing now and fail to remember the past and to look to the future. In this restless society, many Americans have fallen victim to this profound yet simple problem. Students forget about assignments and tests, teachers lose track of time in their thought-provoking lectures, and even parents forget their own children’s names as they are busy pondering the struggles of another one of their children or the many duties to which they must attend.
However, our forgetfulness is not solely linked to the business and restlessness of the society in which we live, but also is a direct result of the exhaustion and laziness we feel because of the business of our lives.
After completing my homework last week, I retired to my bed. Due to lateness of the hour, I forgot to turn off my bedroom light. I woke up around 4:45am, about five or six hours after falling asleep. Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer was misperceived at first. All of the other reindeer used to laugh and call him names, but after he led Santa’s sleigh, they loved him. Misperceptions like this happen all throughout Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. As you read the novel you see original judgments made about characters transform into new conceptions and new understandings. Some characters twist your views of them on purpose, others do it involuntarily. To Kill a Mockingbird shows this happening over and over again. All you have to do is look for it.
There are many differences between the book; To Kill a Mockingbird and the movie. Some differences are easy to spot and some aren’t. Many things that are in the book aren’t in the movie. Many of these things you don’t need, but are crucial to the plot of the book. Movies and books have differences and similarities, but many things in books MUST be included in the movie.
To Kill a Mockingbird is a phenomenal book that portrays life in the South during the 1930’s. This poverty stricken time, in which many struggled to get through, seemed to never grow dull by the means of the Finch family. Harper Lee’s award winning book was captured in a film containing the same title. Although the movie was in black and white and average in length, it lived up to the vivid story depicted within many pages. This worldwide hit reached many minds, but it is up to the people to decide which one is better: the book or the movie.
In this essay I will discuss three overarching topics and the differences and similarities they show between the film "A Time to Kill" which stars Samuel L. Jackson and Matthew McConaughey and the novel To Kill a Mockingbird which is written by Harper Lee. These overarching topics will be racial prejudice, justice, and morality. I will discuss racial prejudice's role in the court proceedings as well as state what would have occured had Carl Lee and Tom Robinson been white. In the section about justice I will discuss how the outcomes would have occured in real life had both men been judged based on crimes they actually commited and been judged by the law with no extenuating circumstances or racial prejudices affecting the verdict. I will discuss these themes using examples that have Nathan Radley and Tom Robinson from To Kill a Mockingbird and Carl Lee Hailey from "A Time to Kill".
In my opinion, I agree that To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee should be taught in schools. It should be taught for a variety of reasons, some in which the article we read covered and some it did not. I think it should be taught in schools because it tells us real life examples of what our history used to be like and the book could also teach all of us a lesson in life. Some points in the article we read that I will be talking about is what the book is about, how it is important for American history, and finally why I disagree with the statement of only adults should be able to read this.
There’s always been the argument of “Which is better?” when it comes to book versus movie. In the case of To Kill A Mockingbird, in my opinion, the movie lacks certain details needed to really see some of the themes Harper Lee is trying to get across. The movie leaves out some important characters. It also leaves out many certain events that are significant to the character development of Scout and Jem. These things, I believe are crucial to the story and message of To Kill A
As most everyone knows, there are differences between a book and it’s movie adaptation. This is applicable to the book and it’s movie counterpart To Kill a Mockingbird, as well. But aside from the differences, there are also similarities between these two.
To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel about all different kinds of stereotypes. It takes place during the 30’s in the depression. It uses a young girl’s perspective to show how these stereotypes were so abundant, and how terrible they were. The novel has many themes about racism and sexism, which the author portrays in creative ways. I believe that To Kill a Mockingbird is very much still relevant today.

According to esteemed novelist Wally Lamb, “It was the first time in my life that a book had sort of captured me. That was exciting; I didn’t realize that literature could do that” (111). Scout’s witty narration and brash actions make her the kind of heroine you can’t help but root for, and the events that take place in Maycomb County are small-scale versions of the dilemmas that face our world today. We must understand that life is to be shared, it is not a race whose only “goal is to he foremost” (Bellah et. al., P. 296). It is to be lived. We must be committed to those we love, and to our communities. Maybe the longing for nostalgia in this country can help to return to a time when family, friends, community, church and more were important and we all knew we were part of something greater than ourselves. We must however not live in the past, we must use the past to build and focus on the future.

Has evil always been around, or did man create it? One could trace evil all the way back to Adam and Eve; however, evil came to them, but it was not in them. When did evil become part of a person? No one knows, but evil has been around for a long time and unfortunately is discovered by everyone. For my fourth quarter movie review, I decided to watch To Kill A Mockingbird because I have already read the book and wanted to see the film adaptation of it. This movie focuses on the Finch family in the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama around the time of the Great Depression. It is based off of the book of the same name by Harper Lee. Both focus on Scout and Jem Finch growing up in the deep South and struggling to figure out how to act in the world around them.
