Atticus is the symbol of courage in Lee’s novel for he demonstrates true acts of courage throughout the novel again and again. He shows his truest act of courage by taking Tom Robinson’s case. Atticus believes that “every lawyer gets at least one case in his lifetime that affects him personally” and Tom Robinson’s case is his personal case for he believes that he is fighting for what is right (101). Atticus not only takes Tom Robinson’s case, he defends Tom vigorously, pitting himself against the prevailing attitudes and customs of Maycomb. He stands up to his town’s racism issues and it takes a huge amount of courage to defy the united minds of people for he is exposing himself and his family to difficult times. This proves that Atticus’ moral courage is just as strong as his physical courage. He knows that winning the case is out of reach but he fights for the right thing for he believes that “the one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience”
