Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” In To Kill a Mockingbird ,school plays a huge role in the characters' lives. Each family or the families in the book view school differently.Some take school very seriously and others only come on the first day. This is based on the town's caste system. Since it was during the Great Depression, there were not many rich people. At the top of the caste system was the wealthy but average families like the Finches. They go to school regularly and therefore advance well. The Cunninghams and the Ewells were classified as the middle class.They did not take school as serious and went less often.They lived a normal lifestyle ,but struggled. The bottom of the system was mostly the blacks. Since these families were in different classes of the caste system, they all live very different lives.
The Finches were towards the top of the caste system. They lived a very nice life. They have a nice house and lived in a nice neighborhood. They went to school everyday and

The Ewells were a family that do not really care about education. The parents did not really care if their children went to school or not. The children only attend school once a year, on the first day, and are not seen until the next year. This family was a very low income family. They did not have a job. They did not think that education was needed to help them sustain throughout their lives. On the other hand, many families like the Finch’s put education as a number one priority.
Education is considered key in most careers. George Washington Carver once said, “Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom.” This is not the case for all families. Also, the parents with higher education might provide a favorable environment since is easier to get a steady job with higher education. According to Kean, (2005), the parents with higher education have positive influence on children’s outcome, cause the majority of parents who are very educated might influence their kids though beliefs and behaviors, that will lead children and youth to a positive outcome (Kean, 2005).

Other than the obvious theme of racism, the movie also touches on the prejudices between social classes and education are seen throughout the movie as well. The behavior and manners of the Cunningham family is what definitely sets them apart from the Ewell family. Although both households are penniless, the Cunningham’s tries to have a neat outward appearance, while the Ewell’s are absolutely untidy. This contrast is noticeable on Scout’s first day of school. Walter Cunningham is wearing a tidy clean shirt and restored overalls; Burris Ewell has dirty neck and face, black fingernails, with bugs in his hair. Both Cunningham’s and Ewell’s are uneducated and they sometime don’t attend school for different reasons.
Discrimination and Prejudice in Killing A Mocking Bird Discrimination and prejudice were very common acts in the early and middle 1900's. Prejudice in this book is displayed by the acts of hate and misunderstanding because of someone's color. People of color were the majority that were treated unfairly. During this time in the southern states, black people had to use separate bathrooms, drinking fountains, sections in restaurants, churches, and even go to separate schools. Although much of the discrimination was directed towards blacks, there were plenty of accounts towards impoverished families by those that had money.
Social Justice There are many responsibilities and duties that one should fulfill to rid the world of social injustices and inequalities but if no one doesn’t step in then how is this issue supposed to be put to rest? In To Kill a Mockingbird, the fictional town of Maycomb County isn’t a perfect little town but one that is filled with racist, critical, and judgmental people with no morals. On the other hand, there are people like Atticus Finch who do what they believe is right. Atticus filled his responsibility for this issue by defending Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping Mayella Ewell. This was a pivotal moment in the book because Atticus took the case when no one else in Maycomb would because they are too afraid and racist to defend a man like Tom Robinson, an African American.
America has always been a country with different cultures, races, and people. Only, not everyone has been accepting of different kinds of people. A persons thoughts on another person can differ depending on a person's race, gender, or age. In Harper Lee’s, To Kill a Mockingbird, racial equality is nonexistent. The African Americans were treated like they weren’t people, and were totally isolated from the Maycomb, Alabama society. America will never achieve true racial and social equality because people are ignorant, have a history of being prejudiced, and are unjust.

In the book, To Kill A Mockingbird the teacher Miss Caroline tried her best. She did not have the right ideas for education though. Miss Caroline scolded Scout for knowing how to read and write. In education now, we encourage children to learn to read and write before school starts. Another problem with the schooling in To Kill A Mockingbird is that they judge the children on social status, not academics. I am not saying that no one ever thinks that poor kids get nowhere and rich kids have it all, but we base judgement more on character than social status now. For example in To Kill A Mockingbird, Scout speaks up about the Cunningham’s financial issues. In Scout’s hometown they pay a lot of attention to wealth and how the people live (Lee). Today, wealth is still a fixation, but people get in trouble for making fun of others wealth.
In the average person’s life education is everything and is shown everywhere, even in places you would not expect to find it. Education is important for life in today’s average society because if you do not have an education you most likely would not get a high paying job or no job at all because education is needed for almost everything. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee Education in Maycomb is showed by many people and is interpreted to Scout, Jem and Dill in many ways even though it is flawed and sometimes backwards in most cases. In the south there is a certain “code” that is in place that leads as a social standing, but it especially plays a role in how people get treated in Maycomb county. Maycomb county's people have their own way of living, with their own standards and unwritten rules already in place.There are different groups of people and it ranks from highest to lowest in social standing. Boo and Tom have had this unwritten law pushed upon them everyday of their lives just so they are reminded who they are and what Maycomb thinks they are. The citizens of Maycomb consider them to be “outcasts’ in their society because Boo has some “problems” and Tom is a different skin colour. Despite these very different reasons on why Maycomb has put this title on them, these men are in fact very much alike. Boo and Tom imitate what society’s “code” is with the songs they sing through the lessons they teach, the uniqueness, kindness, and genuine human feelings they have.

The residents of Maycomb have discrimination running through their veins and were raised to be racist and sexist, without realizing. They see nothing wrong with judging other people and treating people that they find inferior harshly. Prejudice is a destructive force because it separates the people of Maycomb, both physically and mentally.
Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird expresses the ideology that the social standard of a particular individual, classifies their status in the world. Individuals placed in social classes are labeled to create a sense of social identity. The socio-economic class an individual is born into should not be the determining factor of how the individual is regarded and treated, however, their character and personality should be a primary factor in determining how they are thought of in society.
Education is essential for everyone. Education plays a critical role in the development of a generation of individuals that is virtuous and in turn contributes to the development of good people. Through education, a person is able to develop mentally, but also physically and socially. To the youths, education is important as it helps them to develop the principles of life, enables them to make the correct career decisions and also prepares them in the pursuit of the goals that they may have set for themselves in life. I strongly believe that a good, heck, or even a regular education is a right that cannot be taken away. Education is a right and not a privilege.
