On television programs like, “To Catch a Predator,” when the curtains are drawn back, several of the child predators featured on the show stay to be interviewed. What most say can be shocking, as some try to rationalize their actions and others say they did not intend to do anything with the young child they believed they were in communication with in online chat rooms and messaging systems. Some send inappropriate pictures and make inappropriate comments to the usually thirteen to fourteen year old girls. When they are caught by the cameras, some change their stories and some are honest about their illegal endeavors. The premise of the show was to catch these men in the act, using hidden cameras to film their every move in the decoy house.

The United States of America has always supported freedom and privacy for its citizens. More importantly, the United States values the safety of its citizens at a much higher level. Every year more laws are implemented in an attempt to deter general or specific criminal behaviors or prevent recidivism among those who have already committed crimes. One of the most heinous crimes that still occurs very often in the United States is sex offenses against children. Currently, there are over 700,000 registered sex offenders and 265,000 sex offenders who are under correctional supervision. It is estimated that approximately 3% of the offenders who are currently incarcerated will likely commit another sex-related crime upon release (Park & Lee, 2013, p. 26). There are several laws that have been in place regarding sex offenses for decades, including Megan’s Law which was enacted in 1996.
We have all watched television shows, we have heard the warnings, and have read numerous articles that expose internet predators and pedophiles. Most of us are aware of the dangers surrounding children and teenagers as they navigate the internet’s virtual world. There is no shortage of predators online. Chris Hanson has a very popular show called To Catch a Predator that has helped bring awareness to the public of this heinous crime against children, and while this is extremely important to know and prevent, there is another large segment of society that is at risk too. This paper will focus on this “other” population.

There are many topics nowadays that are still hard to talk about openly. Though we’ve opened the door on many controversies, some of the simplest parts of life can be the hardest to discuss. For most of us, sex in particular can be a taboo topic, which may be the reason why so many children and teens are misinformed on the inner workings of sexual relationships and how they develop as we grow and mature. For some adolescents, this can lead to an unhealthy fixation on the concept of sex, and in some cases, lead them to take action on a situation they do not fully understand. Sexual offenses are perceived as some of the most heinous crimes, but how could our views be affected if those acts were performed by a teenager? We may sometimes consider that they are the same as adult sex offenders; however our judgment can often be clouded by our lack of understanding. Adolescent sex offenders are different from adult sex offenders, are treated in a different way, and often have very different circumstances of their crime.
Many people think that children do not lie. It is not that they lie, they just cannot remember what happened a year or two ago when they were much younger, perhaps only a year or two old. The truth is children do lie. “One study shows that twenty three percent of abuse allegations are false and there was insufficient information to determine the truth in another twenty four percent” (Slicker W.D., 1999, Child testimony ¶ 16). Fear is also a factor in children lying or not providing adequate information. Lepore (1991) says that studies show in most abuse cases the suspect will usually bribe the child or threaten them into secrecy. This causes the child to become afraid to tell the truth, and they will begin to deny what has happened or even worse not report the abuse at all. The way an interviewer phrases a question will influence a child.
Are we bothered by the fact that in the current social climate, the rights of convicted pedophiles are routinely violated and nobody cares. Rules of evidence are stretched, and terms of punishment are increased. The danger of this precedent is impossible to ignore.

A serial criminal lifestyle represents of a rapist toward an innocent stranger of a woman with no hesitation. Through a rapist's eyes he sees what anybody else sees in choosing his targets such as she can be short, ponytail, African American, Hispanic, Asian (RAINN, 2009), types of clothing, and her walking style. In choosing his victim, his main goal is to pick the multi-tasker walker in another word she projects aloud not paying attention. It ranges from 0 mile to 1 miles of the perpetrator (RAINN, 2009), which can leads to one step closer to grabbing her quickly and easily without any witnesses noticing anything from the scene. Law enforcement officers have used multiple techniques over the years to try to catch criminals in the act. One such technique is the use of undercover officers, who work in the field to gain information under a false persona. This tactic is often used to catch child predators in online chat rooms. These men and women of the law pose as young boys and girls in an effort to catch a predator before they can harm another child.
Anyone with a device that has Wi-Fi capabilities can easily log onto the internet and type in three simple letters; XXX. Typing in these letters will bring up thousands of databases filled with pornography, including that of virtual child pornography. The matter of using children as sexual objects is morally wrong, law or no law, virtually generated or not. To force children to perform sexual activities, even on camera is very harmful and a crime, even though the courts know this, the approval of virtually generated child pornography, has been approved for quite some time now because it supposedly does not put an actual child in harm’s way, yet it provokes sexual predators the idea to fantasize about children and/ or even persuade a sexual predator to seek out children to perform these sexual activities in person for them.
The story line consists of a gay law student named Connor who is very sexually promiscuous. Connor uses sex to gain information in efforts to win cases for his law professor Annalise Keating. One of his victims is an IT technician, Oliver who helps Connor get information. During the 9 episodes that currently aired thus far, Connor has had the Medium: Television Show “How to Get Away with Murder” Television has never been popular for being a role model for children.
According to the statistics, “One in five U.S. teenagers who regularly log on to the Internet says they have received an unwanted sexual solicitation via the Web. Solicitations were defined as requests to engage in sexual activities or sexual talk, or to give out personal sexual information. (Only 25% of those told a parent).” Online predators have the opportunity to talk freely and direct to someone on social media than in person. Imagine being a parent in this situation, who would not want an online predator coming for their child. This can cause fear on a child for many years. Social media can be a disgusting world for the youth of today.
So many topics were covered throughout this semester but this being a sex crimes class, majority of the class dealt with sex at least the negative aspects of what occurs with it. Sex is everywhere these days, even if you wanted to escape it there is no where you can go to get away from it. Whether it’s a sexual act, phrase, or action, sex has consumed most of our society and has been put in a highly negative way where people are ashamed to talk about. As our class has agreed upon on saying that we all believe that everyone is sexually unhappy. I do agree with this, but I just want to put it out there that as a virgin I believe that I am actually unaware of how this feeling of unhappiness arises or feels for those people that are sexually unhappy
...n them and their friends. Online predators mainly exist on the Internet, because they take advantage of the anonymity that social networking sites provide. They usually treat their victims with kindness, attention and even gifts. Once the predator build trust with their victim, they will try to meet them in real life in hope that they can fulfill their fantasies of having sexual encounter with underage kids.
