Theme 1 - What does it mean to be human?
When this theme was first introduced, I thought I knew what being human was. I realized soon after that I only had a basic understanding, but I didn’t really know the true meaning. I felt a wave of curiosity as we read the theme title in class, truly starting to wonder what the meaning of being human was.
A class activity that had me learn more about this theme was writing the poem about humans.
Studying this theme affected my life, my relationships, my feelings, my actions and my values. This theme affected my life through the changing of my understanding of human life. This change in my understanding affected my relationships in a positive way because it helped me to

look at the people in my life differently, especially after learning “The Human Vocation” on page 12. “The Human Vocation” also affected my feelings, actions and values because it developed a new perspective for me to look from. I could now see how humans were equal, based on the qualities that God gave us. In conclusion, learning about what it means to be human affected all aspects of my life, including my relationships, feelings, actions and values. This theme has nurtured my relationship with Christ and the Church, as far as making a connection between my basic understanding of a human being and seeing humans from a religious perspective. Prayer: Dear God, Unit Two - Who has culture? Theme 5 - What are the sights and sounds of culture? When this theme was first introduced, I felt excited to learn more about what culture consists of.
Theme four initiated the excitement and interest in culture, after understanding the components of culture. Theme five went deeper into these components, which was what I was excited for.
I learned many things about this theme through class activities. Watching the film “Wave Rider” showed the power of rituals in people’s lives. The film demonstrated all of the parts of a ritual included in theme five. The main character, Pai, carried a tradition, used her body and words to save the whales, and reformed a community with her family and friends. These components are all very important and watching the film helped to visually see these parts carried out.
Studying this theme affected my life, my relationships, my feelings, my actions and my values. Learning about rituals brought me the realization that my own family actually has many rituals and traditions, such as Sunday visits at my grandma’s house. Recognizing my own rituals and traditions has affected my relationships with my family, by showing more appreciation for my father and grandmother who passed down the rituals and traditions. This theme has also affected my feelings, since I now feel closer and more connected to my heritage. This has affected my actions and values because I try to carry out these rituals and traditions more than I regularly
would. This theme has nurtured my relationship with Christ because learning about culture makes me realize that God blessed me with a family that passes on wonderful rituals and traditions that create an appreciation for my own culture. We can understand this theme by using character. In paragraph 3, Petry states, "The wind lifted Lutie Johnson's hair away from the back of her neck so that she felt suddenly naked and bald, for her hair had been resting softly and warmly against her skin. She shivered as the cold fingers of the wind touched the back of her neck, explored the sides of her head." This quote shows that the wind was so raw that it "ripped the people's hair off." This contributes to the theme by stating the wind is the struggle that people must get through to get to their next destination. Another way we can find the theme is through events. Petry writes in paragraph 3, "Each time she thought she had the sign in focus, the wind pushed it away from her so that she wasn't certain whether it said three rooms or two rooms. If it was three, why, she would go in and ask to see it, but if it said two - why, there wasn't any point." This quote is saying that the wind was blowing so hard that the character could not read the sign. By showing the difficulty in visualizing the sign, creating struggle, we develop a further understanding of the theme. Another way we can portray theme, is through setting. Paragraph 2 states, "Fingering its way along the curb, the wind set the bits of paper to dancing high in the air, so that a barrage of paper swirled into the faces of the people on the street. It even took time to rush into doorways and areaways and find chicken bones and pork-chop bones and pushed them along the curb. It did everything it could to discourage the people walking along the street. It found all the dirt and dust and grime on the sidewalk and lifted it up so that the dirt got into their noses, making it difficult to breathe; the dust got into their eyes and blinded them; and the grit stung their skins." This quote portrays the setting clearly by explaining what the wind did to the

One of the messages the author is trying to get across to the reader is, the ability to accept ones true self. June May continuously worries about what her family will think about her. “And rather than be impressed, I am worried about the expense, as well as the appearance it must give Aiyi, that we rich Americans cannot be without our luxuries even for one night.” (187). Symbolic cognition, the ability for one entity to show empathetic emotion towards another. ‘Blade Runner’ explores the philosophical themes of what it means to be human, emphasising the difficulties humans have appreciating what makes them human along with the emotional and social complexity necessary to identify a person. The question regarding our humanity, or ‘what it is to be human’ is one of the most important questions to be addressed in Blade Runner, and in today’s society. In this essay I will argue that researching into what it means to ‘be human’ is a quite complex task, because of the various philosophical and biblical concepts - where an individual is a spirt simply experiencing the world in a material form. In order to support my statement, I will give examples of how ‘Blade Runner’ relates to different theoretical frameworks I will discuss in this essay.

I read an essay written by Marc Prensky called “Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants”. The main idea of the essay is that the young generation today are the digital natives and the older people are the digital immigrants. The essay also mentions how the digital natives may not be able to be taught the traditional way the digital immigrants have been taught because of the technology today. I read another article called “Technology’s Impact on Society in Today’s Generation”. The article is about impacts on the todays generation using technology. Both articles are similar due to today’s generation and their use of technology. They are different because they also talk about other subjects.
We will also look at how family rituals can help build family relationships and help build unity within the family and why do we have family rituals and how they can change over the years. We will also discuss how family rituals help develop skills that are needed in school and everyday living. We will also discuss how family rituals are used in a therapeutic environment and how you can create your own family rituals with your family.
