Colonial settlers John Smith and William Bradford were two of many Englishmen that partook in an expedition across the Atlantic Ocean in hopes of starting life anew in the New World. They lived and died around similar time frames and are both known for their success in maritime travel. Although the premise of their journeys are similar, it is evident through their respective narrative accounts that the two vastly differ in their motivations, perspectives, and literary structure.
“We consider ourselves an alternative culture. It’s like being Spanish in an English society- there’s just a language barrier”, explained Peter Cook to the Chicago Tribune. Cook is a deaf performer, poet, and comedian, to say the least, who tries to defy the language barrier by creating shows that not only deaf can understand but also allow the hearing to interact. Through these shows, he tells stories of miscommunication and the obstacles he has had to overcome since he became deaf. I wonder what his true inspiration was to become a poet, and a performer whether it may be a person or his own personal experiences throughout life.
Tim O’Brien is an accredited writer who writes mostly about war. Although, I can conclude that Tim O’ Brien is different from other war writers because he brings war stories to life. O’ Brien does not explain the strategies of the war, he describes the guys that he fought amongst in the war. His novel, “The Things They Carried” is an emotional retelling of the Vietnam War. He allows readers to experience the thoughts, feelings, and conflicts of the characters throughout the book. By allowing readers to experience the character’s moods, readers are able to relate to the characters through their own memories, thoughts, and feelings. I related to many of his stories, especially, “On A Rainy River”, “Stockings”, and “The Things They Carried.” Throughout this paper, I will express my reflection of the short stories, “On A Rainy River”, “Stockings”, and “The Things They Carried.”
“Intellect had run up against emotion. My conscience told me to run, yet some irrational and powerful force was resisting, like a weight pushing me toward the war. What it came to, stupidly, was a sense of shame. Hot, stupid shame. I did not want people to think badly of me.” (Tim O’Brien; On the Rainy River).
Having engaged in a relentless and detailed examination of Christopher Columbus’ four voyages across the Atlantic, the reader can now undoubtedly claim to have ascertained a greater level of knowledge and appreciation than he before could have ever held. Although the reader is bereft of a happy or joyous ending, he can find solace in a better comprehension of past events, those men who characterized them, and the implied lessons for a future that will inevitably become a part of history itself. Columbus: the four voyages, by Laurence Bergreen, is a remarkable biography that provides all of that, and then

William Faulkner’s life was defined by his inability to conduct himself as a true Southern gentleman. He never achieved affluence, strength, chivalry or honor. Therefore, the myth of Southern masculinity eluded him. Faulkner shied away from violence, he never proved himself in battle. He was not a hard worker, nor was he an excellent family man. Seemingly worst of all, he did not follow in the footsteps of his father and the “Old Colonel.” The code of Southern gentility highly praises family tradition. As a born and bred Southerner I can attest to this fact. Every man in my family for ten generations has been a plumber. It is the utmost honor for a man to follow his father’s example. Faulkner, unfortunately, was incapable of really living like his father. Therefore, I believe Faulkner’s collective failures are rooted in the fact that he could not live up to the standards set by the men in his family.
Apple has transformed from a computer genius to a powerhouse of all technology. “Jobs’ genius was in impressing his visions upon people,” and with each new advice the amazement of Apple followers strengthened (“Apple Computers”). Apple has created an illusion of a perfect society. With greater, more advanced technology, people believe that the world can only continue getting better. Customers have bought so mentally into Apples mission that they cringe at seeing someone using another device brand. Not only does Apple create an easier way to get everyday tasks complete, they make it look good too, “Jobs played a directive role at Apple in the development of products that were both elegant and tasteful” (“Apple llc Computer”). In today’s society the people are brainwashed by advancements which portray nothing less than a picture-perfect society, a
Apple (from an interview with CEO Tim Cook): “We believe that we are on the face of the earth to make great products and that’s not changing. We are constantly focusing on innovating. We believe in the simple not the complex. We believe that we need to own and control the primary technologies behind the products that we make, and participate only in markets where we can make a significant contribution. We believe in saying no to thousands of projects, so that we can really focus on the few that are truly important and meaningful to us. We believe in deep collaboration and cross-pollination of our groups, which allow us to innovate in a way that others cannot. And frankly, we don’t settle for anything less than excellence in every group in the company, and we have the self-honesty to admit when we’re wrong and the courage to change. And I think regardless of who is in what job those values are so embedded in this company that Apple will do extremely well.”
The author tied in the Russian incursion across the Aleutians southward and the Spanish colonization northward across California and Alaska, and near the very end, tells how Captain Cook arrived on the east coast in the middle
Within the last decade Apple has become one of the largest growing companies in the world and the largest valued company in the United States. According to a recent article in The Guardian, a global financial news website, “Apple set a record by becoming the first company to be valued at over $700bn (£446bn).” (Fletcher, N. 2014) This comes as no surprise to the average computer aficionado and shareholder as Apple has been making a name for itself since its inception. From its earliest Macintosh models to today’s iPhones, Apple has been a trailblazer for software, technology and revolutionizing the way we communicate on a Macro level. Their dedication to innovation, quality and service has made them
These products, built upon incredible foresight and attention to detail, carried tremendous customer loyalty and high margins. Apple management must bridge the perceived innovation gap with some sort of product breakthrough. Otherwise, it is reasonable for the company to accept lower Street expectations built upon the premise that while the company remains an exceptional production, distribution and branded business, the days of unparalleled enterprising innovation and leadership may be ebbing. The best things to do, by Cook, would be to have a VP that replace the innovation brought by Jobs and be in charge only on innovation.
In fact, about this business one can easily write a few weighty books. Without exaggeration, we can say that Apple is one of the brightest technology companies that appeared in the 70s of the last century. Due to innovative technology and aesthetic design, Apple Inc. has established a unique reputation comparable to the cult in the consumer electronics industry. In 2014 the company was ranked first in the world by market capitalization. The concept of the brand is built around the slogan 'Think different’ (Linzmayer, 2004).
Steve Jobs one of the founding fathers of Apple Inc used strategic planning to his advantage by making Apple’s mission a simple one- bringing easy to use computers to the general market, revolutionizing the computer market. In 2007, after thirty years, the organization changed its name from Apple Computer to Apple Inc., this was a significant move because the organization became more independent, and it was no longer known as a vendor to Macintosh personal computer line (Yoffie & Slind, 2008). This strategic move paid off; a year and half later, Apple Inc.’s third quarter net profit of $1.07 billion on a $7.46 billion in revenue (Yoffie & Slind, 2008). SWOT Analysis of Apple, Inc. Strengths (Competitive Advantage)
While [he’s heard the repeated refrains that “Apple can’t innovate under Tim,” that the company needed a low-cost iPhone to thwart the progress of Google’s Android, that Cook never could replicate the Jobs magic—and therefore that Apple never again would be “insanely great.”] (Lashinsky, 2015), he hasn 't changed his methods since Jobs ' passing and continues to lead in a way that he believes will raise Apple 's value in the eyes of society. He was also the CEO during the creation and release of the Apple Watch, which is a product most would classify as "insanely great".
