This article explains the concept of the “twin paradox”, which is also known as “time dilation.” Craig starts his article by introducing the readers to Albert Einstein’s concepts of relativity. According to Craig, Einstein believed that “the basic premise of relativity is that neither time nor space is absolute.” Craig then goes on to explain the background of time dilation, and tries to explain the complicated mathematics behind time dilation. To explain the concept of “twin paradox”, Craig creates a fictional story of two twins, Dr. Mills and Dave Arnold, who decide that the oldest of the twins should travel at the speed of light to a distant planet while the other twin stays behind. The paradox lies in the question of which twin would age faster, Dr. Mills or Dave Arnold. Craig concludes that due the theory of relativity and the analysis of accelerated time frames, Dr. Mills will age faster than Dave. Craig acknowledges the fact that most people who are new to relativity would make the wrong connection between differential aging and acceleration. He concludes his article by stating that “time is as ambiguous as social interaction” and that it is possible to increase youth by time travel.
What I found most interesting about this article was Craig’s idea that it was possible to increase youth by traveling at the speed of light. If this was discovered by our society today, there would no longer be a need for makeup—everyone could simply travel through time in order to look younger. The article then discusses some theories of time travel, which involves the understanding of quantum mechanics and quantum realities. The article then breaks the idea of time travel into 4 sub-theories: fate, alternate universe, success, and the observer effect. Of all the theories, I was most interested in the “observer effect” theory. The “observer effect” theory stipulates that anyone who travels into the past runs the risk of altering any important events of history. It is possible to kill a relative if traveling into the past. This article helped answer many of my questions about time travel, but I wished it would have provided the readers with more theories to help extend its belief that time travel is possible.
In “The Cold Equations”, a short story by Tom Godwin, Godwin did some interesting things with time as he described the unfortunate story of a girl who stowed away illegally on a small spacecraft. The girl, Marilyn, did not know the consequence would be her own death. Unquestionably, in “The Cold Equations,” Tom Godwin manipulated time in order to influence the pace of the plot, because the manipulation and presence of time and deadlines creates suspense, inspires increased interest, and purposefully instills a sense of impending doom.

Herbert George (H.G.) Wells’ 1895 scientific romance novella, The Time Machine, is considered to be one of the forerunners of the science fiction genre. Whilst the story was not the first to explore the concept of time travel, it is quite significant for its pseudoscientific account of how time travel could perhaps occur, this interpretation has shown to be quite influential to numerous productions in both media and literature. Wells explores a number of themes throughout this novella, however there are three prominent ones, the relativity of time, social Darwinism and evolution, and capitalism. These themes explore concepts which are relevant to society and creates connections with the intended 19th century audience.
In conclusion, there were multiple science fiction traits shown throughout the story. The plot had taken place in both the past and the future. In the multiple areas of time, the important role of science was expressed. Despite the benefits of the science of time travel, this useful tool turned out to be the an issue. Through these elements of science fiction, Ray Bradbury warned readers of the dangers of time travel. Like his many other science fiction pieces, he used this short story to prevent a negative outcome. He wrote his works of literature to speculate what will become of the world. By doing so, he would achieve his goal and the purpose of science fiction, to change the world through the art of the possible.
Black holes are the result of the death of a massive star, leaving behind a dense remnant core that eventually collapses to create a gravitational force so strong that nothing, including light, can escape the force. The theory that black holes existed started back in the early 1900s and since then astronomers and scientists have been trying to get a better understanding of them. This phenomenon has been a working progress for astronomers and scientists for many years and as we develop a better understanding of our solar system, the more likely it is to make a significant discovery that can answer some of the most difficult questions about our incredible galaxy and solar system. The more information we are able to acquire about our universe, the more questions we might be able to answer about our existence. With advancements in technology we may be able to see some significant discoveries and insights into the world of black holes.
On the theorectical side, as Mike Garrow notes, special relativity suggests that all of spacetime exist in an eternal 'now' because the finite speed of light means there is no access to information - including notions of when someone else's 'now' is - faster than light can carry it. So, on the one hand, all of history is already written out and so you could contemplate reach back to points in spacetime that existed prior to your local 'now'. On the other hand, light only propogates 'forward' in spacetime ergo without adding exotic information carriers such as tachyons into the mix there is nothing that actually enable the reaching back to occur.
