For some, SeaWorld is known as a beautiful, family tourist attraction where interaction with sea animals is encouraged and well provided. However, for others SeaWorld is seen as a place of tragedy and heartbreak due to the deaths and mistreatment of the sea creatures, and more specifically the Orca Whales. Is it true SeaWorld is responsible for the deaths of dozens of Orcas in order to make money, or is a simple misunderstood tragedy? Time Magazine has been a large competitor in the news world for 95 years. Their journalists write about several topics including politics, business, science, sports, entertainment and more. SeaWorld was very simple, and easy to trust.
“Tilikum Died for His Freedom” is an article written by Ingrid Newkirk the co-founder of a well-known organization known as PETA. This article, along with several others were featured on the Time website. Throughout the article, Newkirk introduces the death of an orca under the care of SeaWorld. This orca is known as “Tilikum”. Newkirk provides background information of Tilikum's young life in the wild. The author explains how the young Orca was stolen from his home on the shores of Iceland when he was just 2 years old. Newkirk also provides additional information of Tilikum and his importance to SeaWorld’s success. An example of this is the orcas large contribution to the breeding within the walls of SeaWorld. Newkirk then explains how because of Tilikum's harsh living environment, the orca killed three humans, including his trainer in 2010. Newkirk also mentions how Tilikum's death was inside an artificial environment where, in her opinion, orcas do not belong. The author then leaves her audience with the thought that death should not be orcas only escape from SeaWorld. Shortly after the death of Tilikum, “SeaWorld
San Diego Puts on Final Killer Whale Show” by Melissa Chan was released by Time Magazine. Chan’s article explains the movement of SeaWorld deciding on a final killer whale performance and henceforth will use the whales in a more naturalistic setting. Shortly after, “California Bans Breeding Killer Whales and Holding Them in Captivity” by Sarah Begley was published. This article announces that no more whales can be bred at SeaWorld located in San Diego. A few months after these articles, a posting from Time Magazine called “The Last Killer Whale Born in Captivity at SeaWorld Dies at 3 Months” by Montia Gajanan, was released. Throughout this article the journalist, Gajanan, explains how a killer whale named Kyra, daughter of Takara, another very popular orca, was the most recent killer whale born at SeaWorld. However unfortunately, the young whale died at only 3 months old due to infection. Time magazine has been a popular news source for almost a century, providing their readers with relevant, up-to-date information on a variety of topics. The articles provided through the well-known publisher Time Magazine are reliable because each one of the authors have correct credentials: journalists and PETA president. Every few months Time releases new, reliable information on the updates of SeaWorld and its animals as well as hundreds of other topics. Time Magazine is a reliable source due to the credible journalists they employ to cover their topics. Also Time has been a top news contributor for a long time: it is obvious it’s because of their authenticity and their ability to keep readers coming back. Time Magazine is a weekly news page based in New York City. Although a downside to using a popular magazine as a source for my research, is that the articles may be slightly bias. However, this is not necessarily a bad thing. Bias can be important to see each stakeholders position and opinion on the topic. The article “Tilikum Died for His Freedom” by Ingrid Newkirk is a reliable source because it is through Time Magazine. The author, Newkirk is a co-founder of the PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) therefore a slight bias may be present. Time Magazine has been around since 1923 and only posts credible, qualified authors. On the Time Magazine website, several other SeaWorld cruelty postings are available to read. The title of the article reveals the author's motivation for writing the article, which in this case is a death of an orca. The authors of Time are very well-known representatives, therefor contact information is limited. The author uses her credibility to inform readers of Time magazine, of the tragic death of yet another orca at the hands of SeaWorld. Newkirk believes that orcas shouldn’t be kept at SeaWorld but instead moved to a coastal sanctuary. The authors motives for writing these articles through Time, is blatantly written as the title of each article. These journalists wish to inform the readers of Time of recent information. It is clear that author Ingrid Newkirk, is informing her audience about the deaths of orcas at SeaWorld. Her information is in fact reliable and can be checked with several other websites for accuracy. Throughout her article she uses pictures and facts, all of which are dated according to their occurance. Also the date of publication is clearly identified at the top of each article. The other journalists, Gajanan and Begley are also credible authors who work for Time Magazine. Their information also is dated by event and by publication. On Time Magazine homepage, you can go to the search page and type SeaWorld. The site then brings you to dozens of articles written by Time Magazines finest. Time Magazine, it’s employees, and readers are all up to date on information and events occurring at SeaWorld as well as thousands of other topics. The information throughout these articles are still relevant due to the ongoing argument of the well-being of orcas and other sea animals in the care of SeaWorld. Each of these articles are valuable to my research because of their credibility and relevance in the news world. Time Magazine is a credible source to help people all over the world know current topics.
Andrew Rossi’s documentary film, Page One: Inside the New York Times fits into the finger categories of news media/entertainment and social relationships. The most relevant category is news media/entertainment. The New York Times is the nation’s oldest continually publishing major newspaper. A newspaper is a type of news media, and its goal is to inform the public. The documentary also fits into the category of social relationships. The documentary depicts many relationships that are a part of the New York Times. It shows partnerships between companies such as that with Vice and the Comcast – NBC merger. Additionally, the Times is made possible by a close relationship between its employees. The documentary makes frequent reference to the need for everyone to work well together and how that makes the Times such a great paper. The New York Time’s influence is not limited to finger categories; it affects millions of people worldwide.
Seaworld is a giant marine life theme park. The greatest attraction to these many theme park would be those killer whales. In fact, these killer whales are the face of the park. As gigant as these mammals are, seaworld is keeping them in some pretty tight quarters. Mr. Jett and Mr.Ventre says “Wild killer whales can swim a hundred miles daily as they socialize, forage, communicate, and breed. In stark contrast, with little horizontal or vertical space in their enclosures, captive orcas swim only limited distances, with most spending many hours surface resting.” The animals don't have the freedom they need. Also when taking the whales out of their natural habit the whales tend to be depressed and not as heath in that situation. They need their freedom in the big ocean blue. Bring them into the small living units, breeding whales in captivity all for the entertainment of humans. At young ages the calves are taken away from their mothers on to a new seaworld park. Mothers of the calves have even been seen denying their offspring.
The captivity of large, wild animals is accepted for theme parks all around the world. Tickets are sold for people to come and watch these animals live and even preform in an exhibit that almost resembles their natural environment. It is impossible for parks and zoos that use animals as attractions to provide the same resources and space they would have in the habitat they are usually found in. They can, however, help injured or ill animals that cannot survive in the wild. This is where I believe they should draw the line for keeping animals in captivity. SeaWorld has gotten a lot of attention in the last few years, especially since the Netflix documentary, Blackfish, was released. This film targets the company for the mistreatment of their orca whales. In particular, it told the story of one named Tilikum and shows the problems he and the other orca whales face while living under the care of SeaWorld. Gabriela Cowperthwaite, the director
At first, the film is happy and the trainers talk about how much they loved working at SeaWorld and working with the animals. As the film goes on, you get to see the tragedies and heartbreak that goes on at these parks. The film talks a lot about the living conditions of the whales. Tilikum gets beat up by the female whales, which does not necessarily happen in the wild. The whales are used to swimming around one hundred miles a day, but in captivity, they are confined to a little swimming pool where they barely have any room to even breathe. It is also mentioned that orcas have a lifespan of twenty-five to thirty years. In reality, that is their lifespan in captivity. In the wild, male orcas can live up to sixty to seventy years and female orcas can live anywhere from eighty to more than one hundred years. This shows how SeaWorld fails to treat their animals
I am sure almost all of you have either been to or heard of SeaWorld. Today I am going to tell you about what they do to their orcas that they are trying to hide. I chose this topic after watching a documentary called “Blackfish” that goes into the behind the scenes of how SeaWorld treats its animals. I have since done further research online to prepare for this presentation. This is an important topic because you should know what kind of company you are funding and behaviors you are endorsing when you go on your vacations to this destination. Today I am going to persuade you that SeaWorld is corrupt and maltreats its animals, specifically the orcas. First, I will talk about the specific way the orcas are treated and how it affects them
Millions of people come from across the world to visit Seaworld every day without thinking about the lives of the animals behind the scenes. Why would they have concerns? From Seaworld’s commercials to the website, they convince the general public that Seaworld is the place to go to see the happy sea animals perform. If Seaworld is such an ecstatic place, what excuse does Tilikum, their greatest well known orca whale, have for the three attacks on trainers? The documentary “Blackfish” was created by the director Gabriela Cowperthwaite because she questioned herself after realizing Tilikum's odd behavior over time in captivity, and if there was any indisputable parts to animal captivity?
John Crowe, one of the hunters, is interviewed and tells the story of “the worst thing he’s ever done”. He appeals to the appalled emotions of the audience by admitting to the inhumane way they captured the baby whales. He uses an analogy when discussing the capturing, claiming it was like “kidnapping a kid from its mother”, which pulls at the heartstrings of any parent watching the film, establishing a sense of relatability. The film uses juxtaposition by examining how Crowe, a tough looking man, can be brought to tears by this horrific act. Blackfish then moves to discussing the reason behind Tilikum’s outburst by running a montage of news reports ambushing SeaWorld on the inhumane treatment of whales. The use of the rhetorical question “If you were in a bathtub for 25 years don’t you think you’d get a little irritated, aggravated, maybe a little psychotic?”, grabs the audience’s attention by creating a scenario they can understand. These events create an accusing tone that convinces the audience that SeaWorld is the antagonist of the film. Along with accusations from reporters, SeaWorld has fought many lawsuits against OSHA- the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, due to the way SeaWorld treats their animals. A court hearing is held regarding Tilikum’s behaviour due to pulled video footage of Tilikum lunging towards one of the trainers
It all began with good intentions. People thinking that they can control these animals and not expect any negative impacts. It was all due to wanting to explore and entertain with the animals. However, not all animals are meant to be taken from the wild to be show animals. After many years of unfair ways, SeaWorld is doing the right thing by closing down the whale exhibit even if it isn’t by choice because it is unhealthy for both the humans and animals involved.
Tilikum is sold to SeaWorld and all of the news reports regarding the death of his previous trainer are altered to reflect an error on the trainer’s part in order to ease the public’s conscience regarding the aggressive
The fact that the animals in Seaworld are depressed and angered means that kids are going to see animals not only in an unnatural state. Unfortunately, they will also have the potential to see aggressive Orcas. Children are going to absolutely terrified by these animals when they are actually very calm. Peaceful animals. Plus, the facts that Seaworld gives their guests about all the animals are downright false! If we were going to compare Seaworld to anything, then I would compare it to a judge sentencing an innocent man to life in prison. Places like this truly show us that mankind is downright evil! Now, let's look back, what are our kids truly learning
Now, Seaworld talks about the animals they rescued because of probable causes, such as illness or injury, any chance they can get, like on their website “With a legacy of animal rescue spanning more than 50 years and benefiting more than 25,000 animals, responding to wildlife in crisis is a commitment we take to heart”. Seaworld will always bring up the animals they save and the animals they give “better” lifestyles to, but what about the animals that they ripped from their family and habitat in order to make a few bucks from the american people, who, for some reason, have a weird obsession over seeing wild animals in tiny cages performing inhumane acts of torture? Well what about those animals? Those animals are forced to live in tanks no bigger than 150 ft x 80 ft and 36 ft deep. An example of one of these animals would be Tilikum. A 34 year old male Orca, who weighs 12,500 lbs and is 22 feet in length was stripped from his family in 1983 from the waters in Iceland waters with no injuries or illness. Seaworld had taken a 2 year old baby orca from his family and have kept him captive for 32 years of his life. But he isn’t the only one. According to The Whale and Dolphin Conservation organization’s website “At least 148 orcas have been taken into captivity from the wild since 1961”. 148 families have been broken, and 148 orcas have died, physically or mentally, while living in tanks equivalent to a bathtub to us . While the debate over zoos, aquariums and animal entertainment are still being talked about, These facilities should be exposed and shut
In the documentary film, Page One: Inside The New York Times, the inner world of journalism is revealed through journalists David Carr and Brian Stelter as the newspaper company The New York Times, struggles to keep alive within a new wave of news journalism. The film is dedicated to reveal the true inner mechanics of what modern day new journalists face on a daily basis and leaves the audience almost in a state of shock. It broadcasts news journalism as yes, an old school method of news generation, but it also highlights an important component that reveals the importance behind this “old school” methodology. We often think that progression always correlates with positive products, but the documentary insists that within the case of modern journalism, the new wave method is actually a detriment that can reap negative consequences.
Although SeaWorld presents itself as a family establishment full of fun “educational” activities. However, these activities harm animals physically and emotionally.
The whale Tilicum who is responsible for multiple deaths of trainers is still in captivity and still performs in shows. He now has no life left in him and for hours will still sit in the same spot. This is no way to treat a living thing and in no way should wild animals like this be put into captivity. The bottom line is that these animals are living mammals and should not be put into situations where they are starved and kept in extremely small spaces to live out their lives. Companies like Sea World should no longer have whale shows and should release all of the whales that will be able to survive into the wild. Sea World would be able to survive without their whale show, and even though it is one of the biggest sources of revenue the park can make money in other endevures.
An orca, more commonly known as a killer whale, is currently one of the largest marine animals held in captivity. Countless arguments are being made, supporting and opposing captivity of orcas to be exploited as circus animals in theme parks around the world. Throughout recent history, Sea World trainers have been injured and killed by the orcas and the whales, and the whales themselves have been observed as severely depressed. If Sea World releases the whales, they would undergo an immense economic downfall and the whales would be too weak to survive in the wild if they were freed. Since the first Sea World park opened in San Diego, California in 1964, common questions have arose concerning the well-being of orcas in captivity, the dangers of humans training them, the physical capability of whales theoretically being released, and the psychological differences between whales living in the wild versus whales living in Sea World's confinement.
