The Ancient One played by Tilda Swinton, threw things off at first, as it was expected for this character to be someone of Asian descent (he was a Tibetan Monk in the comics) and not a bald, white, woman. Surprisingly, she filled the role very well and it was not disappointing. At the beginning of the movie she is portrayed as an all-powerful, sorcerer with a very long life. Mordo presents The Ancient One to Dr. Strange as if she were a god. She says to Strange, “You’re a man looking at the world through a keyhole. When the Ancient One kicked out Dr. Strange, Mordo went to speak to her about giving him a second chance, which her response was, “stubbornness, arrogance, ambition, I’ve seen it all before”, Mordo says, “he reminds you of Kaecilius”. It is then revealed that The Ancient One, is who taught Kaecilius. Throughout the movie, it is made clear that he is the bad guy but there is not much back story or effort put in on his side of the story; therefore, the viewer is left to fill in the blanks on why he strayed away from the Ancient One and her teachings and joined Dormammu in taking over Earth. His character only gets one short scene to sum up his entire relevance to the film and that doesn’t seem sufficient for something that fuels the plot of an entire movie. All that is revealed to the viewer is that Kaecilius is in search for eternal life and plans to get it by assisting Dormammu in taking over Earth with powers from the dark dimension. The make-up chosen for Kaecilius and his helpers from the dark dimension, made it hard to take them serious at times. It seemed as though it was supposed to look like the dark dimension was taking over
