The debate on how to raise ones ' child is something that has been argued over a long period of time and most recently due to the sudden increase in child births around the world. What has really been brought into the discussion though is the type of parenting styles that are out there. There are the lenient parents who give their children room to grow and freedom to do what they please because they believe that is what is best for them. Then on the other side there are tiger parents. Tiger parents are defined as strict or demanding parents who push their children to be successful academically by obtaining high levels of scholastic and academic achievement. To sum it up they are the parents who want to push their children towards greatness …show more content…
They are not able to go around having fun and making friends like everyone else which ends up hurting their social skills and even their self esteem. A recent study from the University of California shows that children who grow up with these tiger moms are most likely to suffer from depression and behavioral problems later on in life (Rivas). The intense pressure and responsibility that is placed among those children is also something that they shouldn’t have to face at such an early stage. Some children aren 't able to deal with all that and later grow up feeling as a failure for not living up to their parents standards. The way in which tiger moms raise their children has also affected the way in which society looks at them. It has created a stereotype of the perfect child who gets perfects grades and can do just about anything. However if a child isn 't able to live up to this it causes for them to feel a certain way about themselves and makes them think that their life is a failure for not being able to live up to their according stereotype. A study from the Florida International University agrees with this and also states "The children with intrusive parents were more likely to be overly critical of themselves, and this tendency increased over the years. And that high or increased level of self-criticism was correlated to …show more content…
When a child fails they are able to see the errors that they made and are determined to fix them or even just to move on to something better which is why I think western parenting has a better understanding on the issue. With this type of parenting style they are able to build up a child 's character, social skills, and their self esteem. Assistant professor at the University Of Singapore Ryan Hong conducted some research over parenting styles and concludes that if you must be a Tiger Mom, encourage rather than pressure children. Let children make mistakes. It teaches them to be more dependent and not have so much pressure on themselves (Hong). They allow the children to do the activities that they enjoy in which at the end creates a better relationship between them. With all of this in effect I think that even though western parents may not be able to produce such prodigies at an early age they are still able to make successful children who strongly believe in what they do and wont have all those damaging effects that children from tiger parents
Many parents are now reverting back to these values as guidelines to help raise happier children. Victoria Ruan may be correct about some parents wanting to adopt a western way of raising their children. However, a more likely reason for this sudden swap of discipline for compassion is due to a revival of Buddhist teachings within China.
Chinese parenting is competent at times but there are other times where it is more suitable to follow other forms of parenting such as the Western style. These findings have important consequences for the broader domain of parent-child relationships. Whether it is Chinese parenting or Western parenting the relationship between family members is crucial. According to Amy Chua, Chinese parenting is more effective in helping the child attain a better future through the parents’ interests, while Western parenting style reflects mainly the interests of the child.
Amy Chua (2011) names off three reasons that support her argument in why Chinese children are more successful. First, she mentions that Westerners worry too much on how their child will accept failure, whereas Chinese parents assume only strength in their child and nothing less. For example, if a Western child comes home with a B on a test, some parents will praise the child on their success and some may be upset, while a Chinese parent would convince their child they are “worthless” and “a disgrace.” The Western parents hope to spare their children’s feelings and to be careful not to make their child feel insecure or inadequate, while Chinese parents demand perfect grades because they believe their children can get them (Chua, 2011). Secondly, Chinese parents believe their chil...
When Amy Chua, a professor at Yale, wrote her personal memoir in 2011 called Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, controversy arose regarding the topic of an extreme parenting type called a “Tiger Mom” (Tiger Mom). When The Wall Street Journal posted an excerpt from Chua’s book on their website, it received over 7,000 comments both positive and negative including death threats (Extreme Parenting). In her book, Chua describes is forcing her 7-year old daughter to stay up all night without bathroom or drink breaks until she was able to play a certain piano piece (Extreme Parenting). Her daughter rebels, drops violin, and takes up tennis (Luscombe). Extreme parents exert great pressure on their child to meet expectations, and if they are not met, the child may be punished (Hatter). The MacMillan Dictionary defines a tiger mom as “a very strict mother who makes her children work particularly hard and restricts their free time so they continually achieve the highest grades,” (Tiger Mother).
Western parenting is a compelling illustration of not forcing children to get A’s, but letting the kids themselves figure out how to improve their grades as well as make adjustments from downs. Western parents are more likely to give more care and encouragement to their kids, even if the kids can’t meet their expectations. In the article “America’s Top Parent”, Kolbert claims that, “Americans have always been told to encourage their kids. This, the theory goes, will improve their self-esteem, and this, in turn, will help them learn. ”(1)
Parenting styles have been widely defined by Baumrind into three categories, authoritative, authoritarian and permissive. Parenting styles can be defined as a pattern of attitudes in how parents choose to express and communicate with their children. These styles are categorized based on the level of nurturance, parental control and level of responsiveness (Dwairy, 2004). Authoritative style exhibits high levels of demand, responsiveness and nurturance; authoritarian style exhibits high levels of demand but low levels of responsiveness, permissive style exhibits low levels of demand but high in responsiveness and nurturance (Dwairy, 2004). These parenting styles have been proposed to have a significant impact on a child’s development as well as academic achievement and psychological well-being. Children reared by authoritative parents are stated to have the highest levels of academic achievement, self-esteem, emotional adjustment and well-being according to Baumrind’s category of styles (Dwairy, 2004). However, these three categories are based on Western samples and have been said to describe parenting styles mainly in the West and question its limitations in describing parenting across cultures, as each style’s defining patterns may have different meanings across cultures.
The universality versus cultural specificity debate both have aspects that make sense and can be applied to childhood development. On one side, supporters of the argument for the universality of parenting suggest that certain types of parenting styles will produce the same child development outcomes in different cultures. On the other hand, the argument for cultural specificity states that different parenting practices vary from culture to culture, and that culture ultimately determines the outcomes of child development. Each culture has specific styles of parenting that instill values on children particular to that culture. Each individual has characteristics of what their parents taught them, which gives every individual their own personality. Both sides present logical information on the cultural impacts of parenting on child development outcomes.
...se Tiger Mom style both have their positives and negatives. The Western style offers more freedom, which sounds fun, but in most cases, will not shape a child to survive in the real world, whereas, the Chinese style pushes children to their limit and beyond and makes them excel at things that are unimaginable. Most importantly, Tiger parenting makes children ready to survive in the outer world based on intelligence and hardship.
All parents raise their children differently, using various methods they probably learned from their own parents. Parents like Amy Chua raise their children with tough love, discipline, and a multitude of rules, coining the name "tiger mom." Chua views her parenting technique as supreme, but it is highly controversial to the public and it brings up many questions of the effect it will have on her children 's ' future. In Chua 's "Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior," she emphasizes that Western parenting is not strict enough which cause children to grow up being disrespectful and less achieving than children brought up by tiger moms. I believe that tiger parenting is damaging towards the child and that the Western style of parenting is
Successful parenting may be judged by many different standards. Raising a child to be a respectful, mature, and independent adult requires a great deal of effort. There are several parenting styles, and not all lead a child to reaching their full potential. Overpowering sternness leads may lead to a rebellious child, while passive parenting may lead children to inept for the challenges of adulthood. Parenting requires more than teaching children submissiveness, or building of self-importance. Children learn best from a role model who is admirable. Parenting is a great opportunity to set the course of one’s entire life in the right direction.
There are three major recognized parenting styles: Permissive, Assertive and Neglectful. All carry different characteristics and bring different reactions from the children. Parenting styles such as these can be beneficial to the children. The relationship of each parent and child is totally different, thus there is no one way to parent. The quality of parenting is more important than the quantity of the time spent with the child (Brigid Schulte, March 2015). Parenting styles represents how their parents demand and respond to their children. Parents tend to create their own methodology of teaching as children go through completely different stages in life. People believe that the parents who give their children proper love, nurture, independence and control, have the children who seem to possess higher levels of
To be more specific, authoritarian parents are close to their children because they usually get involved in their child’s every activity. According to Amy Chua, the author of “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior”, she claims that, “Chinese parents spend approximately 10 times as long every day drilling academic activities with their children.” Chua’s point is that Chinese parents are likely to spend time with their kids to make sure that their kids are doing well and safe. For example, when kids have assignments from school, helicopter parents would help with their kids’ homework. Some strict parents may not teach their kids’ homework, but they would force or push their kids to do homework by keeping an eye on them. In this way, raising children by forcing and controlling them also makes children more successful in their academic skills because children would develop a sense of
Well first off to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the parenting styles between the Harsh-Hearts and the Easy-Goings, their styles of child rearing must be categorized first. Child-rearing are combinations of parenting behaviors that occur over a wide range of situations. There are four different categories of combinations in child-rearing: authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved. After studying these two different cases, it can be declared that Mr. and Mrs. Harsh- Heart use an authoritarian child-rearing approach while the Easy- Goings use the authoritative child-rearing style. Authoritarian child-rearing is “low in acceptance and involvement, however high in coercive control, and low in autonomy granting.” (Laura 216)Authoritarian parents have a lot of punishment and usually resort in spanking for discipline. The parents are the boss, there are rules, its tyrannical, there’s structure, and the parents are directive. Meanwhile on the other hand, authoritative is the complete opposite and it is said to be the most successful approach. Authoritative child-rearing “involves high acceptance and involvement, ad...
Parents then base standard rules off of the child’s feelings and assures that the child fully understands why they should follow the rules and what the consequences of breaking them will be. This parenting style creates a strong relationship between the parents and their child allowing the child to mature into an independent person that can make their own decisions. Authoritarian parenting on the other hand requires children to listen to rules without explanation. Parenting of this style requires the children to listen to rules without discussion, and most of the time the parents hardly connect emotionally to their child. The results, as Amy Morin who is a psychotherapist says, “Children who grow up with strict authoritarian parents tend to follow rules much of the time. But, they may develop self-esteem problems” (Morin). In other words, the results of this parenting style cause children to lack in confidence as well as not being sure of their own decision-making skills. Neglectful parenting on the other hand is when the parents are not involved in the child's life. The parents take care of the child's basic needs of survive like food and shelter, but they don't comfort the child or try being in their lives. This can
Children will cope with the negative comments rather than listening to any positive comments. Parents have to demonstrate their acknowledgement but it also be based on cultures (Yaman et al. 2010). Western families are a culture that shows to be authoritarian parenting style because that is the way they have been taught (Yaman et al.
