Sporting is one of the universal activities that brings people from different backgrounds together and is viewed as an income generating activity that creates revenue for the participants as well as the location where the activities are held. The NCAA Final Four Basketball Tournament is one of the most anticipated sporting events in the US that attracts a high number of fans in the cities where it is held. Before the Final Four is held in given location, it is imperative for the organizers to have a detailed understanding of the venue so that they can introduce marketing strategies that are in line with the demands of the fans (Snipes & Ingram, 2007). The host committee is charged with the responsibility to come introduce an exhilarating experience for the locals and visitors. Owing to the interest generated
The National Basketball Association no longer holds the prominence that it once had. In the aftermath of the lockout that took away half of the 1998-99 season, the National Basketball Association finds itself looking into an uncertain future. Appearing similar to the state of the league during the mid 1980's, the NBA finds itself with a tarnished image and no icon's to build the league around. With the retirement of Michael Jordan and the number of superstars in which the league built its popularity on during the 1990's getting smaller, the National Basketball Association sits in limbo while it searches for its new identity.

This is a scenario that is becoming more apparent. In upcoming news the rock and roll band U2 has launched a world wide tour and they plan to come here to Tempe to play Sun Devil Stadium in the beginning weeks of May 97. The political group Rage Against The Machine will also be opening for U2. I am a fan of both of these bands so I looked into getting tickets for the show. I have found some shocking results as far as tickets go as well as tickets for other bands. For the U2 shows it can cost up to $61.60 for ONE ticket. “Thanks in part to eye-popping Ticketmaster telephone service fees of $8.35 per ticket, a set of tickets for U2’s May 31 show at New Jersey’s Giant’s Stadium cost a fan $246.40 for four tickets”(Boehlert 25). As a freshman in college on a tight budget it is extremely difficult for myself to pay that much money for one ticket with a $8.35 surcharge. I am sure that many people can empathize with not wanting to see some of your favorite music at such a high price. Why must the surcharges be so high?
“Fans pay to watch athletes compete at the highest level. To be sure, it is the fans that primarily pay the athletes’ salaries” (Walter). Yes, a large portion of an athlete’s pay comes from the people that come to watch them. Athletes get a portion of all revenue their team or staff receives. This means that everybody gets a cut of that prize money, everybody gets a cut of ...
The business of sports marketing has become both lucrative and influential in shaping sport in general and the individual athletes. The desire for endorsement offers and profitable media coverage has become a crucial facet of modern sport. With a selection of athletes making millions of dollars a year, outside of their sporting arena, it is obvious to see the impact of marketing and advertising on sport. In this essay I will examine the ways in which marketing effects the athletes and sport in general. Also, I will identify the characteristics of a marketable sporting "celebrity" and further look into African American athletes specifically and the way the African American community is marketed.
As the game is winding down I can’t help but wonder what it must be like for some of the NBA’s top tier talent to stop and play in front of the masses. This is the closest some of these people will ever get to a real NBA game. There’s no promise of making it to a game over at the Barlcays or MSG. This is it for them. What makes this venue so appealing? It’s the in-your-face style. They get to serenade and shower the players with “oohs and aahs.” High-fiving their lantsman after a stellar dunk or killer crossover. While Spike Lee is sitting court side and shelling out thousands to see ‘Melo and company, I’m getting to see basketball how it was intended to be played.
James Baldwin is described in the film James Baldwin – The Price of the Ticket as a man who resisted having to deal with the racism of the United States, but eventually found that he had to come back into the country to help defend the cause of civil rights. Baldwin was an American writer who was born in 1924 and died in 1987. He wrote a wide variety of different types of books, examining human experience and the way in which love was a part of that experience. However, he was also very active in the civil rights movement of the 1960s. He was a voice that helped to bring about understanding, even if sometimes it was by slapping White America in the face. His message
When people talk about the impact of women in professional sports, they mention one huge concept: Marketing. Marketing to women is a tremendous source of profit for professional sports, but the impact of how women would respond recently became knowledge. However, now the marketing programs of the different professional sports, including the NFL, need to change their approach on marketing to women. Because the NFL still lacks sales to women compared to other professional sports in America, the NFL needs to change their viewpoints on the experience of women in the stadium and the variety of merchandise available for females.
The San Antonio Spurs redefined basketball in terms of their play on the court and their ability to be profitable despite being in a small market. They have to be very good on the court for them to generate revenue unlike the big market teams like the New York Knicks who struggled on the court but are #1 in brand value and revenue generation. Their team brand of basketball is not the popular version compared to the rest of the NBA, which has more flashiness and spectacular plays. However, critics and the NBA as a model franchise appreciate them. They continue to be a model team with no off field issues and are heavily involved in the local community. Prominent NBA writer, Kevin Arnovitz, chronicles the current Spurs dynasty with an important question to all the basketball fans: Do you care about the San Antonio Spurs? (7).
A decade worth of athletes has had the chance to eclipse Michael Jordan in the minds of the consumer. Yet even out of the spotlight Jordan remains the sports personality with the greatest endorsement chops in the U.S.”( Badenhausen).
The National Basketball Association is the most popular professional basketball league in North America; it is also the most popular professional basketball league in the world. The National Basketball Association (NBA) is one of the most diverse businesses in the world, which was the deliberate plan of former NBA commissioner David Stern. The NBA was once an all white and male dominated league, now through years of an aggressive effort to diversify the organization the NBA is now one of the shining beacons for diversity, tolerance and acceptance in the workplace. Former NBA commissioner David Stern spearheaded and put into action on the best examples of creating and cultivation opportunities for success based on merit. “When David Stern steps down as NBA Commissioner in 2014, among the legacies he will have created is an era in professional sport when leagues and teams hired the best people possible. He embraced the moral imperative for diversity while helping to show the other leagues that diversity is also a business imperative. The evidence for the NBA’s continued commitment to racial equality is seen in the strong grades in the League Office and in many key areas on the team level.”(Lapchick, R.) To fully understand the transformation of the league we will cover the history of the association, team diversity, league diversity, the NBA diversity initiative, and current diversity issues.
Other than the trademark short shorts of the 70’s and 80’s, the game of basketball has drastically changed over time. Even the high-flying, basketball pro, Michael Jordan acknowledged that today’s game is not what it used to be, paying homage to areas that surpassed, but also the areas that, he believed, worsened. Many embrace these new changes, however, there are still many who believe that the NBA is slowly withering away and losing its edge; which will you be?
Economics teaches that charging extra makes a profit. To successfully scalp tickets, the ticket price selected by management has to be less than the ‘market clearing price.’ Management saves money on advertisement when long lines bring in publicity. Big ticket events are where scalpers get the most business. Scalping would no longer be an issue if the box office sold them at prices each individual was willing to pay.
