Three Mile Island ~Stephen Curry~ ~Aka Braden Anderson~ On March 28, 1979, at 4:00 A.M. Eastern time, the worst accident in commercial nuclear power history happened. It was a nice day in Dauphin county, Pennsylvania, and then it all happened. This accident was rated a 5 on a scale that only goes to 7. The scale is called International Nuclear Event Scale. It all started inside the secondary-system where the pilot-operated relief valve was stuck open releasing large amounts of nuclear reactor coolant. This horrific accident caused many scientists to worry about nuclear energy, as well as concerning scientists that it could be a danger to the world, so this caused many safety concerns among activists and the general public which resulted in in new regulations for the nuclear industry, and has been cited as a contributor to the decline of a new reactor construction program that was already underway in the 1970s. Even though this sounds like it should have caused many people to develop cancerous cells, epidemiological studies analyzing the rate of cancer in and around the area since the accident, determined there was a small statistically non-significant increase in the rate and thus no causal connection linking the accident with these cancers has been substantiated. Many of them were human impacts. One impact for example was that from the years 1963–1979, the number of reactors under construction globally increased every year except 1971 and 1978. However, following the event, the number of reactors under construction in the U.S. declined every year from 1980–1998. This was of course encouraged by the accident. Many reactors were even cancelled. 57 nuclear reactors were cancelled from 1980-1984. The world still has a lot of nuclear reactors because of this accident though. Even though it was a turning point, it made us more aware of the dangers and then we could build safer and more modified power

This is a fascinating and emotional quote told by the characters Hortense, a very strong mannered Jamaican woman who arrives in the city of London for the first time to pursue her dream as a teacher. The quote briefly covers most parts of the story in the book Small Island, because it sketches a picture of England between 1948 and de situation before the wars, when the Jamaican immigrants were arriving in England. The unexpected welcoming shows the disparity between the white and black people. This was her first impression of the English people. Moreover, with this quote she describes the differences between their living conditions and income to their own small Island Jamaica. Hortense, was also experiencing a major racial prejudice in Britain. The book gradually ends with how the war changed the British society. This is an emotional and at the same times a fun book that made me smile. Andrea Levy, makes the readers sympathize with the Jamaican characters, because these people who dream of seeing the larger world and relocate to England were counting on a better life, but unfortunately this was too good to be true. The book is quite appealing, because the characters in the book are confronted with various challenges for instance, racial issues, gender issues and colonialism. Furthermore, the book has multiple themes. It is a story about slavery, friendship, loyalty, race, love, displacement and empire. Therefore, Small Island is definitely a novel worth reading.

At Fukushima, a nuclear power plant in Sendai, Japan, the radioactive rods began to overheat due to the absence of water, which cools it. Explosions occurred at three of the reactors, which spewed radiation into the air (“Comparing nuclear power plant crises”). In conclusion, the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear power plant issues were the causes of the disaster in Japan, but they also had a myriad of effects.
