From nursery rhymes such as the "Three Little Pigs" to the Sampoong Superstore collapse, structural failures are always a threat. In the case of the "Three Little Pigs" nursery rhyme, building material played a key role in preventing the house from collapsing. The Sampoong Superstore, on the other hand, failed due to many factors, but one of the major factors was ethical failure in the construction and maintenance of the structure. The job of an engineer is to prevent these structures from failing. They do so by learning, understanding, and following the basic principles of Statics. Engineers build things stronger than what they were made to handle so that one small mistake will not jeopardize the structure. Although they occur, structural …show more content…
In the end, negligence, ignorance, and greed all contributed to the structural failure of the Sampoong Superstore. An engineer’s responsibility is to figure out all the ways a structure could fail and make sure that it does not fail in that way. If just one of the engineers from either of the contractors were to have reported the management for their malpractices, then no one would have died. If the building was not able to handle the fifth floor, the engineers from the in-house construction company could have refused to allow the construction of the fifth floor. Engineers make mistakes, but they do their best to either prevent them or to take them into account in their calculations. The Sampoong Superstore store was originally within healthy safety margins, but mistake upon mistake eventually led up to the collapse. This clearly shows that engineers are not always at fault and that structural failures can occur due to ethical failures. The best anyone can do to prevent such failures is proper inspection and maintenance of the structure. If everyone simply followed the code of ethics while understanding the principles of statics, many of the structural failures could have been
...being held accountable, the city officials themselves were also held accountable because of improper safety regulations. Showing that the city itself should be at fault for not enforcing safety regulations for such things as fire escapes, that were not in working order. These unprecedented circumstances just lay down the blueprint for what is now the correct way to set regulations for industrial factory conditions.
...afety should have inspected the building prior to issuing permits for further renovation, especially knowing this structure was going to be housing 124 residents. It seems that lack of knowledge from prior owners and lack of responsibility of city officials are responsible for this collapse and sadly, the loss of 9 brave men in the line of duty. The Boston Fire Department could have worked closer with the owner/ construction crew at the Hotel Vendome, and the deficiencies would have been found, and they would have known the instability they were walking into on June 17. At that point, firefighting operations would have more than likely been defensive. The firefighters did not conduct pre-incident planning which would have let them know they were going to face the construction barriers while attempting to lay hose, maneuver hose, and get the hose to a water source.
Alastair Norcross in his article “Puppies, Pigs, and People: Eating Meat and Marginal cases “expresses the moral dilemma based on factory farming. Norcross gives an example of a man named Fred. Fred has to torture puppies in order to be able to enjoy chocolate. This is because when puppies are brutally tortured and then brutally killed they release a chemical called cocoamone. This chemical enhances the taste of chocolate, so Fred is killing puppies for gustatory pleasure. Any morally sound person would be appalled at what Frank is doing to these puppies and that is the basis of Norcross’s article. He is arguing that raising animals on factory farms and what Fred is doing are both morally wrong, because in both cases we are brutally killing the
What kind of traits do you find most admirable? In “The Story of the Three Little Pigs”, there are three little pigs and a wolf. The three pigs each build their own house out of materials that they gather. The first pig's house is made of straw, the second furze, and the last, bricks. Then a wolf comes knocking at each of the three pigs doors, successfully breaking the first two pigs' houses down and gobbling up the pigs inside. As the wolf comes to the third pig's house, he is unable to break it down, as the house is made of bricks the pig, then outsmarts the wolf and it is the wolf who ends up being eaten by the Third Little Pig. In this story, Third Little Pig is the most admirable of the Three Little Pigs.
A human being is a precious specimen; capable of committing inimitable advances, or even fatal tragedies. Unfortunately, we are not always succumbing to the criteria set upon us. We tend to negate the standards and produce something mutilated. A perfect example of this action is the appalling calamity that took place in the Brown Building in Manhattan, New York City. The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire was a ghastly event caused by carelessness and sloppiness in the work place; leading up to one of the most salient reforms in American history; the Labor Reform Movement.
To clarify, the Engineering Code of Ethics is the set of rules established by the National Society of Professional Engineers that all engineers are expected to adhere to. In essence, the fundamental tenets of this code are that all engineers are expected to prioritize public safety, as well as be honest with their clients and the general public while only doing work that they are qualified to do. (“Code of Ethics,” n.d.). The reason this code is crucial in this case is because it offers guiding principles for the men and women who are in charge of so many of the various structures and buildings that are used by everyone in society. If the engineering population were to fail to adhere to this code, many people’s lives would be put in jeopardy; buildings might crumble, planes may crash, and bridges could collapse. This means that this code serves to keep engineers in check so that the world maintains stability, therefore its importance cannot be emphasized enough. Furthermore, since this code is nationally recognized, if a company’s engineers were to violate any aspect of it, it would be seen nation-wide as a misuse of power for the sake
Once upon a time, there were three little pigs that were kicked out of their birth home by their parents and told to live life on there own. These three little pigs were ready to build their own homes and get secure jobs. The first little pig was lazy, overweight and did not like to work at all. He wanted to take the easy path, and built a house out of straw which could barely support it’s own weight. After he was finished building his insecure house of straw, he decided to visit his brothers. He danced down the dirt path, to see how they were progressing with their homes.
The theme in the story “Three Little Pigs” is that sometimes the underdog wins. For example the quote, "Boy were the pigs happy and they quickly tied up the wolf" shows that the pigs beat the wolf even though they were the underdogs. This is important because the pigs had a moment when they beat the big-headed wolf and could tie him up to show they won. Furthermore this shows they are the underdog because in the story, the wolf knocked down their houses but in the end they tied up the wolf. Another example of the theme is the quote "To get rid of the wolf they flushed him down the toilet." For example this quote shows that after the pigs tied up the obnoxious wolf they flushed him down the toilet. This is important because they were the underdogs
In conclusion, the designers and builders of the tower have an undesirable job: creating a building that is functional, modern, sustainable and unique. At the same time it is honoring the memory of the people that died in and around the buildings that stood there before. While the green sustainable features have been criticized for being too expensive, they will do more than save just water, electricity and emissions. They and the grace of the building will inspire a generation of green and safe skyscrapers for the twenty-first century. This building has become one of the safest, environmentally friendly and expensive ever built, but as critics slate the building for various reasons, one cannot take away the determination through political, social and economic status that designers and workers have created such a beautiful building with great meaning.
The Three Little Pigs has been an iconic story for many, many years. Many stories has been produced with different narrators each time. How can the same story have so many different versions? Many people think it is easy to target the audience and change it up a bit. In each version the language will switch around, the narrator usually will transition, and the audience has different targets. When the language is different the whole story changes also.
The escalator death ignited the anger of many Chinese netizens who saw the video on social network Sina Weibo. There were some who blamed the mall staff for not turning the escalator off or preventing customers from getting on the faulty machinery. Most of them put the blame on the management of the department store.
Structural Engineering is the field of engineering dealing with the analysis and designs the structures that supports or resist the loads. Its most commonly used in of buildings and structures is building the
During the past two centuries a various number of bridges and buildings had been structurally failed and collapsed all over the world. Some of these cases caused a sizeable number of human losses. For example, collapse of Tay Bridge in 1879 killed at least sixty persons. Beside the problems related to their construction and design, probably the miscarriage to follow engineering ethics correctly was partly responsible for these incidents. Growing engineering professionalism during the nineteenth century gave rise to the development of a number of famous engineering societies, such as American Institute of Mining Engineers (AIME) (1871), American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE ( (1884), etc. Instead, responding to series of significant structural failures mentioned above, some engineering societies developed formal codes of ethics.
In conclusion, civil engineers have a responsibility to deal with current issues in a professional and ethical manner for the benefit of society. The topics discusses included: high energy consumption of buildings, the need for efficient water resources, transportation planning, poor infrastructures doomed to failure, the need to have higher standards to become a licensed professional engineer, how globalization has affected all engineers, and the need to have more professional use advance engineering informatics. All these subjects were pondered about how these challenges can be overcome are there effective methods that engineers can apply today. Unfortunately, not all problems are easy to handle.
