THREE IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT BHP BILLITON:
CARRYING OUT OPERATIONS SAFELY AND TAKING CARE OF PEOPLE SAFETY
The safety and health of people is core to every aspect of business. People return home safe and well at the end of day and enabling them to end their working life fit and healthy are central to everything industry do.
There operations are in system in place to identify, manage and effectively respond to foreseeable crisis and emergencies. Collectively, these requirements are designed to enable our operations to safely return to full function as possible.
CLIMATE CHANGE AND ENERGY
Mainstream science of climate change is correct; human activities are having an impact on our climate, and this may pose risks to our social and economic wellbeing. BHP recognises that we have a responsibility to constructively engage on climate change issues.
Clear price signal – ensuring that the carbon price signal reaches consumers such that consumption is reduced and investment choices are made that favour low-carbon alternatives.
Revenue neutral – returning aggregate revenues raised to individuals and businesses impacted by the carbon price that maximally offset the impact of increased carbon costs.
Broad-based – covering the broadest possible range of both carbon emission activities and low-carbon energy options in any plan ensures the largest base for emissions reduction.
Predictable and gradual – ensuring that future carbon costs are predictable facilitates investments that reduce emissions; a gradual change in price gives the economy time to adjust.

When it comes to safety most people think they are safe, and they have a true understanding on how to work safe. Human nature prevents us from harming ourselves. Our instincts help protect us from harm. Yet everyday there are injuries and deaths across the world due to being unsafe. What causes people to work unsafe is one of the main challenges that face all Safety Managers across the world.

As a natural resources company, BHP Billiton is vulnerable to changes in the environment and policies regarding the environment. With each environmental downfall, profit is jeopardized, which can push growth and innovation back. BHP Billiton has been heavily affected with blackouts in South Australia that has been interrupting production in Olympic Dam since September 28 during a two-week blackout. Without power supply security, BHP Billiton is having difficulty keeping power prices affordable in South Australia. The total estimated profit loss of the power outages was $450 million. These obstacles have disturbed BHP Billiton’s ability to compete globally with electricity price rises.
...s is priceless. Whether it’s through public awareness or implementation of policies, the end goal and objective is to provide sustainability for future generations ahead.
The end result is that everyone wants to come to work in an environment that is stress free and safe. A business needs to make a concrete commitment to the health and security of its employees. Let’s not wait until it’s too late.
David, Suzuki. “Carbon Offsets Are One of Many Solutions Needed for Global Warming.” Current Controversies: Carbon Offsets. Ed. Debra A. Miller. Detroit: Greenhaven Press, 2009. Print.
We recognize that our success as an enterprise depends on the talent, skills and expertise of our people and our ability to function as a tightly integrated team. We appreciate our diversity and believe that respect - for our colleagues, customers, partners, and all those with whom we interact - is an essential element of all positive and productive business relationships.
For these reasons, global warming stands as one of the most daunting policy issues facing our world today. This is compounded by the debate over the very existence of climate change. While countless sources of empirical evidence testify to the very real presence of climate change the world over, considerable denial of the phenomenon still exists. The argument has been made that evidence about climate change is a gross overstatement, or in some cases, a complete fabrication. Despite the evidence to the contrary, many interest groups with considerable political clout have successfully perpetuated the argument that documented changes in the environment are a product of natural cyclical changes in climate, and are not associated with human activities. However, even the acceptance of this particular brand of reality is no grounds for the disregard of environmental consciousness. Even if one accepts the premise that recent climate change is not resultant of human activity, the rationale behind environmental conservation remains ...
“BT looked at the entire carbon footprint of its business, finding that emissions outside its own direct control counted for 92% of the total. And 64% of that impact was just in BT’s upstream supply chain.” – Carbon Trust
Introduction Canadian health and safety legislation requires companies and organizations to make a commitment towards occupational health and safety. Maintaining a safe workplace environment has numerous benefits. A safe work environment can boost employee morale, increase productivity, and improve job satisfaction. For companies and organizations, these benefits can lead to less turnover and increased employee retention. They can also reduce absenteeism while improving the culture and image of a company or organization.
Ensuring the health and safety of employees is of primary importance to the Organization. Organization is committed to maintaining safe facilities, sponsoring appropriate training programs, and providing necessary safety equipment. In addition, Administration and staff shall cooperatively develop appropriate procedures and regulations for ensuring employees' health and safety, with special emphasis on the handling of potentially hazardous equipment or substances and for investigating and reporting any accidents and mishaps. All newly employed staff shall be required to comply with the physical examination. Every employee must provide annually, at a minimum, an updated health history of current health problems.
...cern of many governments across the globe. Thaler and Sunstein suggest that reduction of pollution and the cost associated with this action can be achieved by improving incentives and feedback of environmental protection through better choice architecture and gentle nudges. I agree with many of the suggestions in this chapter on improving feedback of the actions that have negative environmental consequences. I think I will start being more aware of the impact my choices have on the environment. I could start looking at the disclosures of the companies I buy from and see what impact they have on the environment. I may also start purchasing products that are more energy efficient and advantageous in the long run. Even though these products may be more costly in the short run, I know I will be awarding the companies that are innovating technology for pollution control.
One of the biggest challenges managers face in motivating employees is the ability to meet their safety needs. Because of the weak economy and high
We live in a world where many people either do not know much about the issue of climate change or hold many misconceptions. Climate change skeptics often cite that since the climate has changed in the past, it does not matter that the climate is changing now. Science says that carbon dioxide is the main factor when it comes to what contributes to climate change. It is not necessarily the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, but rather the rate at which it is changing. There have been periods in history in which carbon dioxide levels have been high, but “Life, ocean chemistry, and atmospheric gasses had millions of years to adjust to those levels” (howardlee, 2014). There have been other times when carbon dioxide levels have changed rapidly, and this has resulted in severe consequences: “When CO2 levels jumped rapidly, the global warming that resulted was highly disruptive and sometimes caused mass extinctions” (Howardlee, 2014). Current data shows that humans are producing this kind of rapid change, and so we must go forward attempting to mitigate large emissions of greenhouse
Mr Price Group must also protect the planet by decreasing their carbon footprint even more and start more projects such as the rooftop gardens to lessen their impact on the environment to better publicity. Mr Price Group reduced their carbon footprint by 17% or 29 500 tonnes of CO2 emissions through improved energy usage and lower energy intensive lighting. They can also increase the amount of waste recycled at the head office which is currently only at 50%.
