For the first time in his life, Shouyou was sneaking away from his kingdom. Alone. It had taken some effort, but he was able to convince the servant escorting him through one of the villages to allow him to walk home by himself. The second he was alone, he bolted. He knew he risked getting in trouble when he got back, but seeing even just a little more of the world had to be worth it. Shouyou appreciated all the things his parents did to protect him, but it could get pretty suffocating. He was barely allowed to go to the bathroom alone! He spent all his time learning how to protect himself from dangerous people, but his parents would never let him do the things he really wanted. He wanted to meet people, and see things. Shouyou wondered if maybe the boy was just too shy to talk to a stranger, so he squatted next to him. Immediately, he was in awe of the talent before him. The dark haired boy had drawn a spider. The creature itself was hideous, but the image was beautiful and powerful. Shouyou found himself wondering if maybe spiders were misunderstood. After all, it wasn't their fault they were scary. After about five tries, the boy had begun to watch him. "What are you doing?" he asked "Playing a game. You can play, too, if you want." Shouyou replied between tosses. The boy didn't answer, but he watched Shouyou as his rock bounced off the apple tree a few more times. "You suck," The dark haired boy mocks "let me try." "Hey! I'd like to see you do better!" Shouyou retorts, handing over the rock. The boy does much
The central theme in all of them is that he was not in an environment that taught him to live what is considered a normal life. The people he was surrounded by and who had the most influence on him were the ones who taught him to be the way he was and act the way he did. If he had lived in a different city, or had different role models growing up, then maybe he would not have been led into a life of crime. Unfortunately however, he was surrounded by poor circumstances and was forced to do whatever he could in order to survive. Works Cited Adler, Freda, Gerhard O. W. Mueller, and William S. Laufer.

At the beginning of his journey the child resembles most of us in youth. This is seen at the beginning of the story when the young boy wanders away from home into the forest. “It was happy in a new sense of freedom from control, happy in the opportunity of exploration and adventure ;”( Bierce) He is innocently playing a game of war which children have been doing throughout history. Most children when slipping away from parental control, especially at the age when they are just beginning to be both eager to explore and weary of adult constraints, feel the heady sense of freedom that this boy experiences.

For me, there were moments in my life where I felt that I was trapped by my own inaction and that to truly explore myself, I needed to free my mind from the chains of society, so in order to prevent a life of little purpose, I would have to take the first initiative to change my situation for the better. The change would not be one of comfort and safety, but it would be one of the main principles of a living spirit: the passion for adventure. From the words of John F.
