To be an effective manager one must be able to mange with purpose not just manage the daily activities. All of the manager’s responsibilities need to be molded and developed to align with the company’s vision and mission. Mintzberg discusses a model image of what a manager’s job looks like from the inside out. His concept of new managers are “putty to be molded” (Mintzberg, 2005, p. 55) provided insight that not everyone that is a manager should be a manager. Many new managers want to take their own direction and work towards their own vision of what should happen. Whereas, managing with purpose is the fundamental framework of a manager’s job. I have always maintained that managers and leaders had very different roles and not every manager can lead and not every leader can manage. A manager focuses on deadlines, metrics and budgets while the leader motivates the people, develops the culture and focuses on the vision of the business. I found it interesting that Mintzberg contends an organization becomes dysfunctional if the manager is not a leader. I feel that organizations, in the 21st century, need to have managers that lead and leaders that manage. These positions should be synonymous in order to synergize innovation and cultivate creativity. Strategies develop and evolve through a simple thought. It then grows and shifts the paradigm of how a business operates. Mintzberg refers to IKEA, the highly successful Swedish furniture company, and how they were able to solve the issue of transporting bulky goods; “One of the workers, frustrated in trying to get a table in his car decided to take the legs off. Insight number one – all customers have the same challenge, thus, IKEA began selling unassembled merchandize” (Mintzberg on Man... ... middle of paper ... ... interrelated “inner/outer” dynamic managing process outlined by Minzberg, a day in my work life does mirror these principles. Therefore with diversity comes different beliefs, norms, and values. Eurocentric values dominate sciences and began cultural universals which puts the clash of dominate and non-dominate cultural behaviors in motion. In 1996 the NASW Code of Ethics increased the recognition of cultural competence. It is important to know diversity exist within ethnic and cultural groups because social workers need to know that relationships between helping professionals and clients may be strained. This happens because of the distrust between groups. Another important aspect is that the professional realizes their own values, biases, and beliefs. The reason for this is because they must value diversity to start with and understand the dynamics of difference. Culturally competent practitioners have to go through developmental process of using their own culture as a starting point to meet all behaviors. Striving for cultural competence is a long term process of development. The literature on cultural competence is theoretical and conceptual. They have not been evaluated in a systematic way. Roughly there are 2 million Native americans in the U.S. Which survive decimating disease, over-repressed in child welfare system, suffer from health problems, and are among the poorest people in the United States. Working with them clearly falls within the social work clearly mandate to serve vulnerable and oppressed clients. The central idea of “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” by Flannery O'Connor deals with the struggle to change a person in a positive way through religion. A person can be easily changed if grace, properly experienced, changes one's personal qualities (O'Connor qtd. in Hendricks). Religion’s chief functions include: a system of explanation and justification for morality. Religion in society provides us with a sense of purpose, security, morality, and obedience. Initial Reflective Essay When I first thought of what I wanted to do with my life after college, the first thing I thought of was helping people. Parents raise their child in such ways in which they believe is beneficial and healthy for the child. A story that came across media news about a baby, Storm, being raised as “genderless” fueled a controversy in defiance of gender stereotyping. The Witterick family in Canada believed that by acknowledging this practice it would, “tribute to freedom and choice in place of limitation, a standup to what the world could become in Storm’s lifetime” (Davis and James). However, in terms of raising a genderless child, this can cause the child to be unprepared to face the conventional norms or society. This practice may be causing the child a disservice.
I believe that many of you have just become citizens of Australia or family and friends. The country of Australia has a lot to offer to anyone who decides to live here. Australians are very welcoming who take in anyone who wants to be a part of the beautiful country. Because Australia is a multicultural country we accept everyone for who they are and we do not discriminate anyone for their original background heritage. If your culture matters to you, it matters to Australia. Australians also like to be very patriotic as we love our country. We believe that our country is ideal because of the freedom we are allowed to life.
Managers nowadays do not actually do what a manager really should do back in the eighties. Changes that occurred in the new economy, the increasing use of technology in business, and the effects of globalisation towards business world have led management into a whole new dimension. New managers are expected to be able to manage on an international scale, act strategically, utilize technology, establish values, and of course, act responsibly as well. (Crainer, 1998) Henry Mintzberg once asked, "What do managers do?" After conducting his research based on a study of five CEOs, he concluded that managerial work involves interpersonal role, decisional role and informational role. And the fact is that, managers get things done through other people. Therefore, managers are required to possess certain skills and competencies which allow them to play these roles effectively and efficiently throughout the four functions of management.
