Thorin Oakenshield is the leader of the dwarves and is one of the main characters in the hobbit (written by J.R.R Tolkien). In the year T.A.(third age) 2746 Thorin was born to Thrain II in the Lonely mountains. Thorin has a very long white beard and wears a distinctive sky blue hood with a silver tassel. He wears a gold chain attached with his grandfather's key and wears yellow stockings. Thorin is suppose to be quite tall for a dwarf. Thorin’s part in the story is since Smaug (the dragon) attacked (Erebor) the Lonely Mountain 150 years ago, and took the dwarves mountain and their treasure, Thorin is determined to get the treasure back. Thorin sings and plays the harp and is the leader of this adventure to find the treasure that was taken away from his home, Erebor. …show more content…
Thorin is courageous because he didn't hesitate fighting the trolls and the goblins. Like when they were all being captured by the trolls Thorin “ Jumped forward to the fire, before they could leap on him….and so the fight ended”. I found that the closer they got to the treasure the more greedy Thorin would become, he was obsessed with wealth. It was consuming him and changing him to become irritated more quickly. Thorin is greedy because he wanted the treasure all to himself, without sharing it with the dwarves and Bilbo. One of Thorin's problems is his inability to see the leadership talent that Bilbo brings to the group. I think this because when Bilbo was first chosen to do be the group “Burglar” Thorin didn't seem so satisfied with the idea. Thorin said to the group “I don’t see how he will help us much”, the group had to convince him to let Bilbo come on the adventure. Thorin is said to not be very fond of hobbits. Thorin not liking Bilbo can affect his trust, teamwork and success to finding the
Bilbo cleverly eluded Smaug’s temptation, spared the life of foul creature Gollum, and demonstrate courage more and more throughout his journey. These exquisite traits made Bilbo into the revered character that was loved and respected for generations of readers. Throughout the book, Bilbo’s character had changed. At first, he was the ordinary hobbit who described adventures as “Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things” (4) but by the end of his journeys stated to Thorin, “I am glad that I have shared in your perils” (290). Bilbo’s ability to fight evil, make new friends, and to look beyond his maps and books enable him to become a hero. As Gandalf once said at the very beginning, “There is a lot more in him than you guess, and a deal more than he has any idea of himself” (19). Gandalf was right. What appeared to be an uneasy hobbit who fainted at the thought of adventures, turned out to be a brave leader, a compassionate friend, and an inspiring
There are a lot of characters in the Hobbit. Most if not all of them
Both the novel and the film represent at least one character as having traits compatible to heroism. In the novel, Queen Wealtheow possesses bravery in a situation where she had very little to be optimistic about. She was the sister of Hygmod, young king of nearby Helmings. When the powerful Hrothgar became a probable threat, the young king resorted to giving Wealtheow to the Scydlings as a peace offering. Upon witnessing the donation of Wealtheow to Hrothgar, Grendel observed, “She looked up at Hrothgar’s beard, not his eyes, afraid of him. ‘My lord,’ she said” (101). Wealtheow was obviously frightened to leave her family by means of an unfamiliar king. She knew that she would very rarely ever get to see her family again, but she also knew that her cooperation would result in the safety of her tribe. Also, she would have been intimidated due to the infamous presence of Grendel near Hrothgar’s meadhall. It can be presumed that she knew about Grendel because news of his existence and mayhem had even traveled across sea to Geetland. With all of these fears combined, it would have been understandable if Wealtheow would have adamantly refused to be a peace offering. However, she ac...
...th heroes take are dangerous and difficult. Bilbo makes many mistakes but in the end he does mature and grow as a person. The hero is willing to put everything above themselves. Comparing Bilbo with Beowulf, it is clear that while Beowulf is an archetypal hero from a hero themed story, Bilbo is arguably more of a hero than him in some ways. Bilbo shows himself to not just a hero in skills and prowess but a hero in character, which Beowulf does not seem to show. Thorin even comments “Now is the time for our esteemed Mr. Baggins, who has proved himself a good companion on our long road, and a hobbit full of courage and resource far exceeding his size…” (198). However both heroes have acts of self-sacrifice and courage, while Beowulf uses his physical strength to achieve his heroics, Bilbo’s sense of honour, moral and courage proves himself equal to Beowulf in heroics.
Bilbo as the protagonist of the novel appears sensible partly from Tolkien’s underlying representation of a twentieth century English gentlemen. When Bilbo first arrives at the Gate with the Elvenking and Bard, his first speaking point is business. Tolkien describes Bilbo’s speech as a “business manner” where he mentions how he is “tired of the whole affair” and wishes he were “back in the West in my own home, where folk are more reasonable” (Tolkien 292). Bilbo clearly takes great pride in the business manner of hobbits, where he is accustomed to fiscal matters through his previous occupation in the Shire. In addition, Bilbo clearly states his grievances about the stubborn nature of dwarves and other creatures he encountered along his travels by mentioning ...
The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien is said to be one of the greatest children's novels of all time. The novel, due to its use of such characters as goblins, elves, trolls, giants, and others is in tradition, a fairy tale. The tale centers on a small hobbit by the name of Bilbo Baggins. It follows the journey of a band of dwarves, a wizard named Gandalf, and their robber, Bilbo on their way to retrieving treasure that had long been taken away from them. The hobbit traveled all over Middle-Earth, beginning with Bilbo's tiny hobbit-hole in the ground, to Mirkwood forest, to finally reaching the Mountain in which the dragon Smaug lives. Tolkien uses a large amount of imagery in his writing which can been seen through settings in The Hobbit. The imagery is usually either dark or light, depending on Bilbo's mood and contrast of his surroundings. J.R.R Tolkien uses dark and light imagery in The Hobbit to effectively set an eerie and mysterious mood and to foreshadow events such as Bilbo's journey in Mirkwood and his adventure in the Mountain.
They both ultimately displayed leadership but in different ways and taking full control of their different strengths. Bilbo wasn't always described as a hero, it was through a vast development stage, throughout the journey that guides himself towards his leadership. I see his heroism shine when naming his sword "Sting" after killing the spider, after this moment Bilbo felt different about himself. I feel it was this the turning point of his journey.”He felt a different person, and much fiercer and bolder.”(Tolkien, 181) Bilbo does engage in a physical battle between a orc, attempting to save Thorin. Even though this would be a task of a traditional hero, Bilbo uses what little physical strength he possesses, and to develop his heroism. Bilbo also demonstrates his quick thinking and leadership by leading the dwarves out of the elvish city of Esgaroth. You may argue that with Thorin's lack of decision making and his greed for wealth makes him a bad leader. That is not totally true, according to Balin, he retells a story at the battle of the mines of Moria, he sliced off the hand of Azog (an opposing leader). With this victory, he gave the dwarves hope and they soon won the war. He may not make all the right decisions but he is a good role model for the other dwarves. With this physical strength the dwarves give him a lot of respect. Both Bilbo and Thorin are leaders, but with different
...s. Bilbo is the one that gives the precious Arkenstone to Bard to help stop a war from starting. If it was not for Bilbo’s courage, Thorin would still be fighting for the Arkenstone and might have also been hurt. Bilbo also helps the dwarves by being a good leader and helping them find a way out of Smaug’s lair. Without Bilbo, the dwarves would not have the audacity to try finding a way out of Smaug’s cave. Bilbo, like a real hero, always makes sure that he finishes the task he sets out to do. Without Bilbo, the dwarves would not be able to finish all the tasks that they want to finish. Bilbo is also the reason why the dwarves are still alive. Bilbo saves the dwarves from many different disasters. The disasters range from the spiders to Smaug. Through good or bad, Bilbo has been able to show the characteristics that a real hero should be able to show.
At the beginning of The Hobbit, Bilbo was sensible and when it came to his actions he was cautious, as well as being wise in thought. “We are plain quiet folk, and I have no use for adventures” (4). This was Bilbo's response when Gandalf mentioned going on the adventure with him. The idea of going outside of the Shire scared him. Gandalf basically
Bilbo Baggins is a very soft and quiet hobbit. He loves to eat, and is pampered by his own self. So when Gandalf arrives to take him on an adventure, Bilbo is a little hesitant –scared to death- to risk his life with Thorin and Company. “At may never return he began to feel a shriek coming up inside, and very soon it burst out like the whistle of an engine coming out of a tunnel. […] The...
An important example of this is when the Elvenking Thranduil captures Thorin and company in Mirkwood, and Bilbo has to rescue them by sneaking around with his ring. The capture of his friends probably leads to Bilbo disliking Thranduil and considers him an undependable person. However, Bilbo ends up trying to help the Elvenking by offering him the Arkenstone during the Battle and eventually gives him a gift when the war is over, compelling Thranduil to make Bilbo an "elf-friend and blessed" (353). Thranduil also clearly didn 't like Thorin, as a result of thinking that " '[him] and [his] folk three times try to attack [his] people at their merrymaking '" (208), as well as thinking him impolite and untrustworthy. However, when Thorin passes away, the Elvenking "laid Orcrist...that had been taken from Thorin in captivity" (349), showing a sign of friendship and respect, prevailing over the feud the two individuals had at the
Bilbo Baggins is the main character in The Hobbit, who has the characteristics of an epic hero. His heroism is “in his wit, not his might” (Glenn). Bilbo undertakes a long journey outside of his comfort zone. He was approached by Gandalf, the wizard, to go on an adventure to help the dwarves find treasure. When Bilbo agrees to join Thorin and company, he took on the job of becoming a burglar. Bilbo shows his burglary skills when he steals the sword from the trolls. Bilbo shows his bravery when he encounters the goblins, wargs, troll...
Bilbo begins his long journey with the dwarves, who at the time were still skeptical of Bilbo’s abilities. The dwarves didn’t see why they needed such a small incompetent hobbit with them along their journey. Gandalf tells them to stop complaining and to trust that there is more to Bilbo than meets the eye (Tolkien 6). Bilbo soon shows his courage and heroism for the first time in the story when they run into their first obstacle, three large trolls huddled around a campfire. Bilbo, who was once a shy, non-adventurous type, begins to develop into a hero as he tries to steal one of the trolls’ money purses. This is a dramatic scene in the novel because it was Bilbo’s very first act outside his comfort zone. It was this...
He remains good hearted throughout the story. At the beginning of the novel Bilbo is neither an adventurous nor brave hobbit. He prefers to stay in his hobbit hole and keep to himself, he is scared of the outside world. When Gandalf comes and says “he is looking for someone to share in an adventure that I am arranging, and it 's very difficult to find anyone.” he immediately shoots the offer down saying “I should think so — in these parts! We are plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things!”(9). Gandalf though saw Bilbo and knew that there was something special inside of him. So, he pushed him out the door where Bilbo would be able to grow. Although Bilbo refuses at first he builds up the courage. Thorin Oakenshield saw Bilbo as small and worthless. Bilbo, at the time, agreed with him. Eventually Bilbo saved his life and Thorin became family to him. Throughout Bilbo 's adventure he goes from being unheroic to courageous and heroic. One example is when he fight off the Great Spider to save the dwarves with the sword he names sting and says that he feels more confident and fierce, from there on he progresses to become stronger and at the end Gandalf says to Bilbo,"Something is the matter with you! You are not the hobbit that you were."(203). From that you can tell that Gandalf has seen the changes, most of the changes come from the ways he saves
He also is fat because he eats 6 meals every day. "There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West, some courage and some wisdom, blended in measure. If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.” Thorin speaks these words in Chapter 18 on page 274 just before he dies asking Bilbo’s forgiveness for his harsh words to him before the Battle of the Five Armies. “Somehow the killing of this giant spider, all alone by himself in the dark . . . made a great difference to Mr. Baggins. He felt a different person, and much fiercer and bolder in spite of an empty stomach, as he wiped his sword on the grass and put it back into its sheath. I will give you a name, he said to it, and I shall call you Sting. This passage from Chapter 8 page shows Bilbo’s reaction to his escape from the giant spider of Mirkwood. There really is no dominant antagonist there are many antagonists like Trolls, Goblins, the Spiders of Mirkwood, the elves, Smaug. If there was one dominant antagonist or enemy I think it would be Smaug because. Smaug as the dragon flies toward Lake Town to wreak vengeance. The people of Lake Town see the dragon coming from a long way off and prepare archers and many buckets of water to douse the coming flames. Their readiness is of little
