Epic heroes are brave and noble beings in stories that are often looked at with awe for their great achievements. These heros normally encompass a multitude of traits that generally revolve around helping others. These traits can include but are not limited to, having supernatural abilities, having supernatural allies and having a mission or higher calling of some sort. One fictional character that fits these traits well is the asgardian Thor.
Supernatural abilities is an epic trait that Thor by no means lacks for he is an asgardian related to thunder and lightning storms. Being an asgardian gives Thor access to a plethora of supernatural abilities. For example, one of Thor's abilities is having super strength. Thor can lift an approximate

100 tons which can be further increased when he goes into a state known as “warriors madness”. This state comes about when Thor succumbs to a mindless rage or performs an ancient ritual and it increases his strength tenfold. Another example of some of Thor's abilities is his resistance to injury and disease. Thor received an enhanced life span from the golden apples of idun which is the reason he is resistant to conventional diseases. Thor is resistant to injury because being an asgardian makes his skin and bones more dense than that of an average mortal. One last example of Thor's abilities is his superhuman speed. Being an asgardian also makes it so that Thor can run and move at speeds that are much faster than that of a normal person. Another supernatural ability that Thor possesses is the epic trait of having supernatural allies.
This is due to the fact that Thor is a member of a team of heroes that go by the name of the Avengers. For example, one member of the Avengers who goes by the title of Ant Man has the ability to either grow or shrink at will. Ordinary people would not be able to pull off a feat such as this. Another example rests in a man who goes by the title of The Hulk. The Hulk is extraordinary because he is a large green man that possesses monstrous strength that is on par with that of Thor's strength. One last example of another supernatural member of the Avengers as well as an ally to Thor is Spider Man who possesses all the abilities of a spider which range from climbing up walls to shooting webs to get …show more content…
around. Thor has many allies to speak of but perhaps his greatest ally is his hammer Mjolnir.
Mjolnir is an indestructible hammer that was entrusted to Thor by his father odin. Not just anyone can wield the hammer because only those deemed worthy by Mjolnir itself can even lift it. This trait gives Thor a strong connection with the hammer because he is the one of the only people that can wield it. By using the Mjolnir Thor can access a host of different abilities he would not normally be able to use. For example, by channeling the power of the hammer Thor can call upon lightning, rain and thunderstorms. This ability has aided Thor countless times in his battles. Thor can also fly at speeds of up to mach 32. using his hammer. He does this by spinning the hammer rapidly and releasing the direction he so wishes to travel. Thor has even been known to use the hammer which is primary used for movement and attacking as a shield. He performs this by spinning the hammer in the direction an attack is coming from. The hammer acts as a shield by deflecting whatever is
inbound. Last but certainly not least, Thor has the epic trait of having a mission. Thor’s mission along with rest of the Avengers is to protect the weak and ultimately defeat the likes of evil. Thor shows signs of this trait on several occasions. For example, when the world was being threatened by Ultron, Thor and the rest of the Avengers were able to put a stop to what seemed like an invincible foe. Thor risked his own life to defeat evil and through that process managed to save the lives of countless people. Thor shows signs of his mission once again when he saves the world from his own brother Loki. For example, Loki once tried to take over asgard but was ultimately defeated by his brother. Under normal circumstances Thor would not have opposed his brother for his love for family was too great, but this was no normal circumstance. In trying to take over asgard Loki went as far as to threaten the lives of those who resided on earth. This spiteful action ultimately pushed Thor to go after and defeat his own family which he held brotherly love for. Loki's defeat shows that Thor values the lives of innocent people so much that he is willing to protect them from anyone who threatens them. One last sign of Thor’s mission is when he seeks help from Loki. For example, After Loki's betrayal Thor hated his own brother and wished for nothing more to do with him. However despite all the bitter and unresolved feelings towards Loki, they were not enough to stop Thor from seeking out his brothers help during another evil attack. This act shows that Thor is willing to put aside even his own pride if it means that he can protect more innocent people. There are many epic heroes with similar traits but the drive and conviction behind Thor’s every action places him in a category that is hard to compete with. Thor has set the bar very high for other epic heroes. Thor's abilities, allies and unyielding resolve to protect the weak make him a truly epic hero in every sense of the words.
The representations of Thor has definitely changed over the past years because of the way people have thought and imagined about the “Thor scenes” in the Greek mythology to create a movie or cartoon for readers. Some representations have been kept and some have been varied, such as the outfit, powers and friends. During the years of people have created multiple movies of the same concept and have added more characters or changed some bits. In the extract of Snorra Edda it reveals that Thor wants to prove that he is powerful and worthy, he comes with the giant Hymer to find his own bait but ends up being arrogant and aggressive because the Midgard Serpant had made him angry. He cannot control his anger and slashes out. Meanwhile as, in the film
Epic heroes. Individuals who are larger than life, brave, and noble are the predecessors to our modern day superheroes. Initially, an epic hero such as Beowulf could be compared to Wonder Woman, a fierce warrior and protector of the Amazons. Both possess titles of nobility, travel over vast settings, and are well-versed fighters, all of which are characteristics of an epic hero. While both individuals are quite similar, there are a few distinctions between the two such as one standing alone in battle, being emotionally connected with their followers, and having a weakness that ultimately leads to their death. For example, Wonder Woman often fights her battles along with her counterparts while Beowulf chooses to battle independently.
Epic battles, terrifying monsters, extraordinary strength, and great leadership; these characteristics and encounters are what make up the epic hero that is Beowulf. The heroism exemplified by Beowulf is defined by many different qualities. Beowulf is truly a hero because he is willing to put himself at great risk for the greater good.
Even though Loki was considered to be one of the Aesir, the Norse gods, he was actually the son of a giant, Fárbauti (“Loki”, par. 1). However, his close relationships with the gods, particularly those with Odin and Thor, might explain why he is so commonly accepted as one of them. In fact, in some accounts, it is even said to be that Loki and Odin are blood brothers (McCoy, par. 16). Loki has three wives, the first of which being Glut, who bore him two daughters, Esia and Einmyri, the second being the giantess Angrboda, who bore him three monsters, “the wolf-giant Fenrir, Hel, ruler of the Dead, and the world-serpent Jormungand”, and the third being Sigyn, who bore him two sons, Narve and Vali (McLeish, par. 5). In addition, Loki also gave birth to Sleipnir, a horse that he later gave to Odin, “after shapeshifting into a mare and courting the stallion Svaðilfari” (McCoy, par. 4).
Every epic Hero has its certain heroic characteristics. The poem Beowulf, written in old English by an anonymous writer still holds fame for describing Heroism. The character Beowulf possesses those characteristics and is known to be one of the greatest heroes of the Anglo-Saxon time. Beowulf was from Geatland and went on quest to Denmark to fight battles for the Danes. He was a mighty man who had tremendous amount of bravery, and throughout his adventure he proves to have all the concepts of an epic hero. Several qualities define Heroism, none of them to be simple, safe, or fun. Beowulf lived by those qualities risking all and saving many in his adventurous epic. One of the most famous works from that time period is Beowulf. The story tells us of how one man, Beowulf, sails to the rescue of King Hrothgar and his people in order to save them from a terrible beast that is threatening not only their lives but also their way of life. The warrior Beowulf definitely shows characteristics of an epic hero through bravery, loyalty, generosity, friendship, achieving something of great value, providing people with a sense of security, and being intelligent.
Myths and religions often include divine or devilish beings with incredible powers. William Shakespeare incorporated witches with bizarre powers in his play, Macbeth. These witches possessed devilish powers to set the course of events in the plot and added to the flavor of the story. The witches' powers included omnientness, vision and apparition creation, and the ability to set the conditions for disaster, and the utilization of these abilities sets the movement of the play.

Beowulf also contains an epic hero. The title of the poem has been named after our epic hero, Beowulf. In definition, an epic hero is someone that does larger than life deeds and is stronger and smarter than any normal man; and Beowulf fits this description as if the mold were made for him. He has the strength of thirty men and uses it as a major weapon against evil. This can be seen through Beowulf’s battles with Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon.
