Tiffany Boren Sociology February 4, 2018 Module 7 Assignment Thomas Theorem The Thomas Theorem is a theory of sociology which was formulated in 1928 by W. I. Thomas and D. S. Thomas (wikipedia, ). Their theory states that interpretation of a situation causes the action, meaning if people define the situation real then the consequences are real for that situation. In short, humans define and respond to situations as a result of their own experiences and thereby create the consequences that they expect. This interpretation is not objective and the actions are affected by subjective perceptions of the situation (Volkert, 1951). Whether there is even an objectively correct interpretation is not important for the purposes of helping guide individuals' behavior.
