Human nature, according to Thomas Hobbes, is a base and narrow kind of nature. In Leviathan he argues from a mental absolutist standpoint: an absolute ruler is the best form of government, although not in response to a Godly proclamation. In his opinion, it is the only form of rule which uses human kind’s totally self-interested nature to its advantage, and shows benefit to the people. Giving up certain liberties for the sake of safety while living at the whim of an absolute ruler may sound absurd these days. However, in this kind of society, Hobbes believed, the rational course of action is for the citizens to act peacefully with each other. In class we discussed the similarities to the mafia. betray or disobey the ruler – no one will be hurt. This concept is in exact contrast to the State of Nature Hobbes describes. To live in this state of nature, outside of all social construct, is described by Hobbes as being solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short (L., 161). As mentioned in class, an ideal personification of this existence is the final scenes from Quintin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. In this state of nature we would all certainly kill each other. And this is the reason I chose not to participate in this game. In this Hobbesian state of nature, all of the rational decisions tend to lead to the worst outcome, personally and socially. There is no logical reason to keep the peace. If I believe my opponents (classmates) will act peacefully, my logical reaction would be aggression (ask for A). The same reaction is called for if I believe they will be aggressor. The only way to have a chance at survival (the A) is to attack at all times. This mentality immediately makes everything worse for all involved. And yet this is the logical choice. I chose to forgo the philosophically mental bloodbath that would ensue from trying to out evil my classmates on the off chance I might receive an A. No one will be left standing. We all get F’s - and I’m trying to keep my GPA up. I will quite docilely stay in our Leviathan¬-esk classroom society under the Machiavellian rule of Don Howie, and take the grades I earn.

According to Jean Jacques Rousseau, human beings are bestowed with the blessings of freedom during their individual genesis on this fruitful planet, but this natural freedom is immensely circumscribed as it’s exchanged for the civil liberties of the State. He indicated that the supplanting of natural freedom is necessary for the obtainment of greater power for the greater collective community, but the prospect of obtaining superlative capabilities comes with the price of constraints. Yet this notion of natural freedom conflicts with Thomas Hobbes rendition on the state of nature because he illustrates that nature, interface through savagery. Essentially in the mind of both Rousseau and Hobbes, constraints are necessary for human beings to be truly free under the covenants and contracts applied to the civil state at which mankind interface through.
In sophisticated prose, Hobbes manages to conclude that human beings are all equal in their ability to harm each other, and furthermore that they are all capable of rendering void at will the covenants they had previously made with other human beings. Hobbes views civil war as a society’s ultimate demise, and the only way to avoid it is for the citizens initially to submit to an absolute political authority. ����������� Thomas Hobbes is an important political and social philosopher. He shares his political philosophy in his work Leviathan. Hobbes begins by describing the state of nature, which is how humans coped with one another prior to the existence of government. He explains that without government, �the weakest has the strength to kill the strongest� (Hobbes 507). People will do whatever it takes to further their own interests and protect their selves; thus, creating a constant war of �every man against every man� (Hobbes 508). His three reasons for people fighting amongst each other prior to government include �competition,� �diffidence,� and �glory� (Hobbes 508). He explains how men fight to take power over other people�s property, to protect them selves, and to achieve fame. He describes life in the state of nature as being �solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short� (Hobbes 508). Hobbes goes on to say that if men can go on to do as they please, there will always be war. To get out of this state of nature, individuals created contracts with each other and began to form a government.
Hobbes believes that all men are equal insofar as that the weakest man has the power to kill the strongest man. Thus given that every man is vulnerable to any other man, all men have a very strong desire to escape the state where killing each other is acceptable, escape the state of nature. This can be done, simply put by endeavoring peace which coupled with not making war except to defend oneself, is the first law of nature (Leviathan 1, 14).

Hobbes makes a clear distinction between civil society and the state of nature. Although everyone has total liberty in the state of nature, Hobbes argues that this isn't a rationally desirable choice. Nature, as he explains it, "hath made men so equal in the faculties of the body and mind, as that, though there be found one man sometimes manifestly stronger in body or of quicker mind than another, yet when all is reckoned together the difference between man and man is not so considerable as that one man can thereupon claim to himself any benefit to which another may not pretend as well as he” (Hobbes 183). This equality, Hobbes states, induces chaos and fear. Since every man is equal in strength to one another, then it is possible for men to be enticed to take one another’s life, liberty and/or property.
In Leviathan, Hobbes seems to underestimate the motives of mankind. His pessimistic view of human nature sheds no light on the goods that men do. While human nature may create a sense of personal survival, it does not imply that human nature will lead towards violent behavior. When left to provide for themselves, mankind will work toward a peace that benefits them all. There will always be evil in the world which will disrupt the peace, but in the end the strength of men should triumph.
Hobbes wrote the Leviathan during the civil war where he had experienced horrendous visions of violence. “Thomas Hobbes lived during some of the most tumultuous times in European history -- consequently, it should be no surprise that his theories were thoroughly pessimistic regarding human nature.” This may support his view that he would rather have any higher authority rather than none no matter how corrupted the government actually is. He wrote that the people “should respect and obey their government because without it society would descend into a civil war ‘of every man against every man’.” However, this may have been the cause for a bias view. To elaborate, a war is an extreme depiction of the potential volatility in human nature. Therefore making one aspect of humanity seems pre-dominant.
