Thomas Edison Biography Essay

Almost all of Thomas Edison’s life was spent spent enriching the world with his awe-inspiring ideas and inventions. Society would recognize him as the man who created the light bulb, but that was just part of his life. The light bulb breakthrough caused him to become one of the most influential people in the world. However, his introverted personality often caused him to work so much that he often didn’t see his family, thus resulting in an unstable family life, all because Thomas Edison was an inventing genius, but not a very social person.

Thomas was born on on February 11th, 1847, in Milan, Ohio.

The parents of Thomas were Sam and Nancy Edison. Because of Thomas’s curiosity and habit of getting into trouble, Sam often had to be stern and

scold his son, but he still cared for him. Nancy, however, was more compassionate and better tended to Thomas. The trouble Thomas often got into was a very minor detail because of the curiosity that often got him into trouble also led to his brilliant way of thinking and his love of invention.
Thomas was a smart child, but asked many questions, leading his father to believe that he was dumb.

However, that was just Thomas’s curiosity. Thomas often didn’t attend school because of constant sickness. This meant that he must stay at home, so his mother home schooled him. Thomas was not very successful in most of his academic classes, but was an excellent reader, and gained a lot of his knowledge from books. At one point Thomas did attend Port Huron school, but while he was under the care of his mother in homeschooling, Thomas decided to leave home and work as a newsboy and sell refreshments on a train car when he was only twelve years old and able to take care of himself. This meant that Thomas would be constantly traveling far away from

home.
When Thomas was a young adult and had enough money to do so, he opened up a small lab/factory to work on his ideas and inventions. At this age, Thomas though it was necessary to have a wife, so he married Mary Stilwell, one of his employees. They were wed in 1871, on the day of Christmas. Farther ahead in his life, two years after Mary passed away, Thomas remarried to Mina Miller.
In 1873, Thomas and Mary’s first daughter was born. Her name was Marion. They had two more sons; Thomas, born in 1876, and William, born in 1878. Their father nicknamed Thomas and Marion with short terms in telegraphy. When Mary passed away, Thomas Edison kept Marion for company, and sent the two boys to live with other family. Thomas Edison and Mary Stilwell did not have the healthiest of marriages. Thomas was not very social, and was always working in the lab.
This caused Mary to be very lonely, and become anxious at night for there was no husband to protect her family. Mary still loved Thomas, but they often didn’t see each other and over time, Mary suffered from neglect. Mary passed away from loneliness, stress and possible “brain congestion”. Thomas grieved over her, and realized how distant he was from Mary. Soon after, Mina Miller was Thomas’s new wife and loving companion.
Earlier in Thomas’s life, he became talented in telegraphy and started many jobs from that. His fame and inventions came from that first passion, as well as his love for experimenting. Even before his fame, Thomas stood out among the crowd because of his awkward manner towards people in general, and his oddly brilliant mind. During his prime years, Thomas’ most famous inventions were the following; the Phonograph, Light Bulb, versions of the Telegraph, and the Motion Picture.
Thomas was most influenced in his childhood experiments, telegraphy, and an inspirational miller man in his neighborhood, who successfully created a hot air balloon. In the world of invention, Thomas had many vital decisions to make. One of these was his agreement to correct and add on to the early light bulb. One problem in Thomas’s life was Mary’s well-being. He did not notice this, but it proved to be very serious. When Mary passed away, Thomas understood the problem, but his second marriage helped his grief. Thomas realized that the problem could have been fixed. He could have taken Mary to the doctor before it was too late, and he could have watched her health.
Thomas was most influential to the world because of his inventing genius, and most commonly known for the light bulb.

Currently today, the use of some of Thomas’s inventions is so great that we are running out of resources to use them for, so that does not positively affect the world. However, in that time Thomas’s inventions were revolutionary and aided many. He was not a very social man, and took to rough atmospheres, where he could keep to himself. But, he was still a good and kind person and overall charming with his brilliance. For all the work he did in his lifetime, Thomas became a famous icon, but also had a Jubilee of Light ceremony dedicated to

him.
Overall, Thomas was brilliant and and determined when it came to his work. Although, he probably would have been much happier if he spent more time with his family and felt their support and love. There may have been personal bumps and problems with ideas, but in the end, Thomas Edison enriched the world.
