This, That and the American Dream” “This, That and the American Dream” an article written by Christian Williams briefly talks about how during a certain time everyone strived to achieve the American dream. This meant that the main thing to accomplish in life was to graduate college, be successful in your career and have a family to provide for. But over time the perception of that dream has changed, the understanding of the American dream has changed because of people wanting excessive power and control. Although people think that they have a different dream for everyone else it actually results back to the same thing. The definition of the American dream is the “Ideal that every U.S citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative” (Google.com). But what the article is trying to say is that there is no American dream, the dream itself was made up. The promises that were to come forth once you’ve accomplished the dream are actually false, we live in a time where even if you go to college you aren’t promised a job right away, college students have gotten into the mindset now where they are not expected to get a career in their field right away or even have a job right away once they graduate. He should have stated how Caucasian people had easier access to the achieving the American dream than minorities. Also, he should have said whether he has achieved the dream himself and what struggles he went through to achieve it. Besides that he did give a few good examples of how the depiction of the American dream is different now than it was before. Like for instance, when he says how graduation represented a gateway to everyone who earned the opportunity to walk through it. He also said that that the ones who achieve the dream are the ones who made sure that they did everything they could to ensure their future would be accomplished. On the other hand, this article relates more to the cultural and economic surroundings of an individual, both of these aspects can interfere with the American dream. Culture plays a part because it is something that a lot of people don’t understand and in America people are not as open about culture as they should be.
