In the book This Boy’s Life the theme of escape is constantly present. Toby’s childhood is one of constantly moving from city to city. All of this moving has a feeling of escape or running away from something, usually a man in Rosemary’s life. As a result, escaping is something that Toby is very accustomed too, and he believes that escaping is always the answer rather than dealing with problems face to face.
One day, Toby was going through people’s possessions and he found a letter from his Uncle Stephen who lived in Paris. He treats this as an opportunity to escape Chinook and go to Paris. Toby then tries to contact him, “That night I wrote to my uncle a long letter in which I created a nightmare picture of our life in Chinook. It seemed

true enough as I wrote it, but I got carried away. At the end of the letter I pleaded with my uncle to bring my mother and me to Paris.” (Pg.136) This is a clear example of Toby wanting to leave Chinook, he “pleads” to his uncle to let him free. Toby also adds to the letter, “ I said I didn’t know how much longer we could hold out, everything depended on him.”(Pg. 136) Growing up in Chinook takes a massive toll on Toby, and it ends up being to much to handle. His desire to escape is fueled by his horrible lifestyle in Chinook, and he doesn’t know how much longer he can last. Stephen responds by saying that he has no room for both of them, they don’t speak French, and Toby belongs in school. However, they offer to take only Toby and adopt him as a condition. Toby’s mother allows him to decide, and Dwight was all for Toby leaving to Paris. In the end Toby decides to stay because he couldn’t imagine abandoning his mother. He explains that he can’t leave her but he eventually will, “ I knew I would someday. But to call someone else my mother was impossible.” I personally admire the strength and love of Toby towards his mother, he decides not to take the easy road out. This episode shows us the relationship that Toby and Rosemary share. Basically, Toby is held back from escaping due to his love for his mother, and the thought of leaving her with Dwight. After working on his paper trail for a couple of years, Toby is able to save eighty dollars in an ammunition box.
Toby has a plan to run away with this money to Alaska, “ Eighty dollars seemed a lot of money, more than enough for my purpose which was to run away to Alaska.”(Pg.155) Toby wants to escape to Alaska because he is unhappy in Chinook, especially with Dwight. He wants to go to Alaska due to Jack London an American journalist who wrote about his adventures in Alaska. Toby even names himself after Jack London, “ I wanted to call myself Jack, after Jack London. I believed that his name would charge me with some strength and competence inherent in my idea of him.”(Pg.8) Toby even dreams of pelt covered walls, racks of guns, and tamed wolves while living in Alaska. However, this plan of escape quickly disappears after a disappointing day at the fair with his scout group. While at the fair Toby comes across a Blackout booth, a game that requires one quarter to play. Toby eventually gets so caught up in the game that he loses all of his eight dollars intended for Alaska. In my opinion, Toby tries to impress all of his new friends, due to his self conscious trait. This trait leaves Toby with no money and no opportunity to go to Alaska. Toby doesn’t have the mental strength to walk away from a game, he has to impress everybody else, he can’t bear to disappoint other
people. Toby has always disliked Dwight, even from the second he saw him. His goal has always been to escape the wrath of Dwight. He grows to dislike Dwight more and more to the point where he thinks about killing him. “My idea was to steal enough money to run away. I was ready to do anything to stay clear of Dwight, I even thought of killing him, shooting him down some night while he was picking on my mother.”(Pg.133) This quote summarizes some reasons of why Toby wants out of Chinook. He cannot handle Dwight anymore, his mother getting picked on, and the horrible conditions of his life. He says that anything is better than living with Dwight. Eventually Toby does succeed, he escapes from Dwight. When Toby injures his finger Toby gently pushes Toby leading to him falling on his finger. After this incident Rosemary decides it has gone on for too long, she says, “This was it, this was the last time. We were getting out of here.” (Pg. 231) Toby never thought escaping Dwight would be that easy, he always believed he had to run away or kill Dwight. He was in complete shock that he escaped from Dwight. In my opinion, Rosemary and Toby should have left much earlier due to many other worse actions, like drunk driving, husking nuts, threatening Rosemary, and stealing everything from Toby. The final scene in This Boy’s Life has a very deep hidden meaning. It ends with Toby and Chuck in a car listening to music, driving into the distance. The hidden meaning is that Toby is finally free from all of his problems, he is free to find himself. I believe that whenever Toby has a problem, he solves it by driving away from it. There are many examples of this like driving away from his father, from Roy, driving to Mexico with Skipper, taking Dwight’s car at night, and the final scene driving away with Chuck. In my opinion, this is a very poor way of dealing with problems, however, everybody has their own ways of dealing with them. When I first read the closing scene I was very disappointed, but it all made sense when you look at it in a different perspective. It gives the book closure, it starts with Toby driving with his mother as a young boy and it ends with him driving as a man.
Rosemary has an inability to be a supporting, loving and providing parent to Toby due to her character flaws, and the expectations of her as a woman in society. Rosemary begins with having absolute faith in her son’s word, as she doesn’t think he can lie to her, and this behaviour is what sends Toby into a spiral of lies that he thinks he can get away with, due to the experiences with his mother. Rosemary is expected as a woman in society to be supported by a man, and make it in the world with a man, which she doesn’t have, and her need to have a “family” drives her to focus of that rather than focusing on being a good parent to her son. Rosemary’s dark past with her father has caused Rosemary not to discipline Toby as she should, making Toby
Have you ever reached success? If the answer is yes, then you probably have had support from family or friends along the way. In “Wonder Children” this theme was crucial to the success of both Maria Anna and Wolfgang. In the passage both of Maria Anna's parents called her a “prodigy” which encouraged her, and from a young age taught her how to play instruments. Wolfgang was at this point driven by his sister's success, which all started from a young age. The dad definitely played a huge role in both Maria Anna's, and Wolfgang's success as musicians. In the Passage “The Family's first prodigy” Maria Anna became even more successful, and in a way overshadowed her brother Wolfgang, but his kind actions and words, helped his sister achieve her goals. And later in the passage he had his time to shine. Support from family or friends can separate a person from achieving their goals, or stumbling under the pressure.
Sarty has moved twelve times in his ten years of age and although the story does not state clearly, that this is not the first time his father has set fire to a barn, but shows that the chances are, that he probably has done this in the past which has affected Sarty in how he feels about his father. Sarty’s other family members include the mother, aunt, an older brother, and two twin sisters who are minor contributing factors in this story. The family knows the father is responsible for the burning of the barns and they even unwillingly help him at his requests. This story describes the family somewhat concerned for the father, but they never challenge his decision to burn the barns even though it is wrong.
Growing up poses challenges to most people at some point in their lives. 16-year-old Holden Caufield is no exception. He is an apathetic teenager who’s flunked out of many schools. Underneath the cynical exterior though, Holden is troubled. He has different methods for escaping his problems but in the end they just cause him more problems. J.D Salinger, in his novel The Catcher in the Rye shows that often times when an individual faces problems in their life they will try to find a means to escape, instead of solving them.
Throughout the poem, Freneau utilizes vivid imagery, precise personification, and skillful metaphors to demonstrate not only the brutal practices of slave holders, but also his disgust for the practice as a whole. Freneau’s usage of personification, imagery, and metaphor expresses his opinions of slavery. He bases his poem, “To Sir Toby,” on the Caribbean islands’ slavery where slave owners treat their slaves like animals. Freneau strongly opposes slavery to every degree; from purchasing slaves as property, to torturing them like animals. “To Sir Toby” emphasizes the injustice and cruelty pertaining to slavery.
The book “This Boy’s Life” by Tobias Wolff is a memoir written about the author’s childhood memories and experiences. The author shows many different characters within the book. Many of them are just minor character that does not affect the author much in his life choices and thoughts throughout his growth. But there are some that acts as the protagonist and some the antagonist. One of them is Dwight, the protagonist’s or Jack’s stepfather. This character seems to be one of the characters that inhibit Jack’s choices and decisions. This character plays a huge role in Jack’s life as it leaves a huge scar in his memory. The author here spends the majority of time in this character in the memoir to show the readers the relationship between Jack and Dwight.
Most of the characters in the movie Sweeney Todd, are vile and cruel. These characters, mainly think of themselves before anyone else and before thinking about any of the consequences of their actions. Tobias Ragg, also known as Toby, is one of the main caring characters. Use to working with
Tre’s character is first introduced as a young boy who is intelligent and headstrong, but also hot-headed, which in the neighbourhood he lives in, it could be his fatal flaw. His first traits are shown when he challenges authority and its Eurocentric curriculum and leads the class in discussion. Because Tre has an issue controlling his anger, he is sent to live with his wise, young father, Furious Styles, who gives Tre the tools to be a productive man in society. Singleton’s portrayal of Furious and his relationship with his son exemplifies the quintessence of a real black man. In the movie, there is no man Furious’s age, with the responsibility of a child. In the end, Tre is the one who is able to be successful. Though, Dyson criticizes this
Imagine waking up on a normal day, in your normal house, in your normal room. Imagine if you knew that that day, you would be taken away from your normal life, and forced to a life of death, sickness, and violence. Imagine seeing your parents taken away from you. Imagine watching your family walk into their certain death. Imagine being a survivor. Just think of the nightmares that linger in your mind. You are stuck with emotional pain gnawing at your sanity. These scenerios are just some of the horrific things that went on between 1933-1945, the time of the Holocaust. This tragic and terrifying event has been written about many times. However, this is about one particularly fascinating story called The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne.
In “The last invisible boy,” Evan Kuhlman uses flashbacks to create a suspenseful tone in the story. He also uses critical moments in the story that connect to other problems in the story that you can develop into one big moment. Their are some symbols in the story that can be in the flashbacks and in the critical moments in the story or just in any part of the story.
In the play The Bear, by Anton Chekhov, Toby starts as a symbol to Mrs. Popova of her late husband and how she refuses to let go of the past. After falling in love with a different man, Mr. Smirnov, Toby is nothing other than a sad reminder of her past and how she needs to move on from it. As mentioned earlier, as a person is ready to move past the memory of a lost one, the object can then be replaced or
Ten years after appearance of Geoffrey Wolff’s The Duke of Deception, Tobias Wolff published This Boy’s Life which was a memoir about his childhood living with his mother. To begin with, his mother (Rosemary) headed to Utah in order to make their fortune by mining Uranium. Once they arrived in Utah, Tobias decided to change his name to Jack, in honor of the famous author Jack London. In doing so, Jack removed himself from his father, who left him and his mother on their own shortly after he was born. Jack’s father during this time lived in Connecticut with brother, Geoffrey Wolff, who studied at Princeton. Even though Jack’s father was out of the picture, he shared a close relationship with his mother who also had an abusive childhood growing

Roald Dahl was a writer of some of the best novels known. Not only was he a writer but he had many other careers such as being a poet, a fighter pilot, and more. Dahl has experienced a lot throughout his life, from school to being in the war. He mainly wrote stories that were intended for children and he was referred to “one of the greatest story tellers for children of the 20th century.” Many of his stories were about real life happenings but he exaggerated them to a great extent in order to make serious situations humorous. This exaggeration added a lot of humour to his stories and this was the main reason why he was such a popular story teller.
